Working with schools is important to us

OverviewOverview Our Schools Program seeks to engage students

in hands-on and minds-on learning experiences aligned to California’s content

standards.

• Connect youth to Lake Tahoe / their surroundings• Engage students in their own learning using inquiry-based

and hands-on approaches to teaching • Educate in and outside of the classroom

Linking the Formal and InformalLinking the Formal and Informal

Learning can be enhanced through:

• Orientation to setting

• Clear learning objectives

• Follow up activities

• Tie to classroom curriculum

Continue to expand the Schools Program– Develop grade level specific modules and

continue to refine in-class and field trip experiences

– Work with teachers and students on service learning projects

– Continue opportunistic strategy of working with all interested K – 12 teachers

– Designed questionnaire to learn more about practices and interests

– Got district approval and distributed hard copies to each school

Key Results– Program must tie to standards

– High level of interest in:

• Logging and other uses of the Lake (e.g. Tourism, ice, mail)

• Stewardship

• Ecology

– Majority of teachers are interested in in-class presentations + fieldtrips to Museum

• Observed existing field trip opportunities and talked to non-formal educators (e.g. Gatekeepers Museum, TERC)

• Active in TTREC meetings
