• The nickel-cadmium battery (commonly abbreviated NiCd or NiCad) is a type of rechargeable battery using nickel oxide hydroxide and metallic cadmium as electrodes.

• The abbreviation NiCd is derived from the chemical symbols of nickel (Ni) and cadmium (Cd) .

CharacteristicCharacteristic

• available in the same sizes as alkaline batteries, from AAA through D.

• the maximum discharge rate for a

NiCd battery varies by size.

• For a common AA-size cell, the maximum discharge rate is approximately 18 amps.

• For a D size battery the discharge rate can be as high as 35 amps.

The advantages of nickel The advantages of nickel – cadmium cell– cadmium cell

• More difficult to damage than other batteries

• Can be recharged repeatedly • No spillage occurs because it is a dry cell

• Portable

• Gives a large current

• Expensive

• Requires a transformer for the recharging process

• Produce low voltage of 1.25V
