WHAT WAS I THINKING?
REFLECTIONS ON BEING A NEW DIRECTOR
AND WESTPAC PRESIDENT AT THE SAME TIME
I was thinking, “’President’ will look great on my tenure application.” I was thinking,
“Associate Director and Director can’t be all that different.” I was thinking it would be
a piece of cake to turn my class notes into that book I’m supposed to be writing. I was
thinking there are more than 24 hours in a day. I was thinking my alter-ego super-
hero’s special powers have something to do with superhuman organizational skills . I
was thinking my new office wouldn’t be complete without WestPac Willy. I was
thinking I work with really great people. And on that last one, I was right: in both my
library and in WestPac I am surrounded by terrific (and endlessly patient!) librarians
who have helped me muddle through it all with some retained sanity and a modicum of
success.
First, the staff at the William J. Jameson Law Library have to be commended for the
hard-work and sense of humor with which they have approached me deciding to
analyze every subscription in the library, implement new book ordering procedures,
start a library blog, and write an ambitious strategic plan, all this year.

President’s Column (continued from previous page)
For a five-person staff, we have accomplished a lot this year and I am proud to work
with them; they have made my initiation into law library directorship easy and enjoy-
able. I also want to take this opportunity to welcome both a new member of our staff
and a new WestPac member, Cynthia Condit. Cynthia has been with us this year on a
temporary contract and is now joining our staff permanently as a Reference & Faculty
Services Librarian, a newly designed position that she is helping to craft. See more in-
formation about Cynthia in her new member profile on page 21. Also in this issue of
WestPac News, I hope you enjoy Ed Wrzesien’s photographs from his travels in West-
Pac country. Ed works in our IT office, but whenever we let him out of the library he
travels around the West and brings back amazing photos, some of which I am happy to
share with you.
Then there are the people who stepped up to the plate in WestPac. When I discovered
way too late in the game that we had no Local Arrangements Chair for the 2012 meet-
ing in Utah, Bonnie Geldmacher agreed to step in. She and Lee Warthen have been
working on finding us a fabulous venue and we can now announce that the 2012 West-
Pac meeting will be held at the Salt Lake Marriott Downtown in Salt Lake City, UT,
October 18-20. Watch the WestPac website and westpac-l for more information.
And speaking of annual meetings, the Executive Board can
also announce that the 2013 meeting will be held in
Nevada. We will be veering away from our site rotation
schedule slightly for the next two years. When I asked
Dennis Sears to start looking for a Zone 4 (Washington
and Canada) location for 2013 he quickly realized that
with the 2013AALL meeting being held in Seattle,
Washington librarians already have their hands full with
conference planning for the year.

President’s Column (continued from previous page)
At Dennis’s suggestion the Executive Board decided to trade
Zone 1 (Alaska, Nevada & Northern California) and Zone 4
sites for the next two years, and Jennifer Gross immediately
volunteered to host the 2013 meeting in Nevada. Not only
that, but she has already recruited a Local Arrangements
Chair for the meeting: Jennifer Anderson from the Wiener-
Rogers Law Library at UNLV. Thank you Dennis, Jennifer
and Jennifer for a creative solution.
Kathy Faust and the Grants & Awards Committee have also been busy. This year
WestPac was awarded an AALL Chapter Registration Grant-- congratulations to
Laura Tretter from the State Law Library of Montana for winning that grant! The
Grants & Awards Committee is still accepting applications for a $750 travel grant for
the Boston AALL meeting. Application forms are available on the WestPac website
and are due May 28.
While Laura and the yet-to-be-selected winner of the travel grant are in Boston, they
will have the opportunity to attend the WestPac luncheon and membership meeting,
which will be held Sunday, July 22 at Noon in Sheraton-Hampton B. Watch the listserv
and website for more information regarding registration for the meeting. I hope to
have the chance to visit with many WestPac members at the luncheon.
Barbara Swatt Engstrom and the Nominations Committee have masterfully put to-
gether an excellent slate of candidates for this month’s WestPac elections for Secretary
and Vice-President/President Elect. See page 18-19 in this newsletter for candidate
statements & bios from Tim Kelly (candidate for Vice-President/President Elect) and
Michelle Finerty (candidate for Secretary). Elections will be held May 7-25. WestPac
members will be receiving instructions on how to participate in the online elections.

President’s Column (continued from previous page)
And thank you for voting in previous elections. It is because of your votes that I have
such an excellent Executive Board to work with this year. Secretary, Ilona Tsutsui, and
Treasurer, Alana Carson-Wilson, are remarkably proficient in their respective jobs. I
have not once had to ask them to do anything because they have already done every-
thing before I knew it had to be done. Rob Truman must live by the philosophy of “no
question is too dumb” because he has suffered some real doozies from me, and always
answered them with wisdom and humor. Jennifer Gross, in true WestPac spirit, is now
looking ahead to being WestPac President and hosting the annual meeting at the same
time. Tim Kelly, Newsletter Editor extraordinaire, is both gracious and patient as I
know he is waiting for this column I promised him a whole week ago.
Finally, a big thank you to everybody who volunteered to serve on WestPac commit-
tees. As my grandmother used to say (she really did), “Many hands make light work.”
See page 15 for the updated list of WestPac commit-
tees. A special thank you to new WestPac members
who immediately volunteered to serve on committees,
including Geri Cepada, who I believe may be our first
member (at least in a while) from Guam. Raise your
hands—how many of you have visions of a WestPac
meeting on the beach in Guam?
One last note (I do that to my students too—I say
“finally” and they think class is over, but it’s not): if
you haven’t yet renewed your WestPac membership
for 2012, please do so right away. Only current mem-
bers will be able to vote in the May elections. Both
print and online renewal forms are available on the
WestPac website. To circle back around, I really am
surrounded by great people in WestPac and I hope you
will continue to be one of those people—renew now!

We have a winner for the comped Boston registration! Her name is Laura Tretter and she is the Techni-
cal Services Librarian at the State Law Library of Montana. She joined the State Law Library’s staff a
little less than a year ago. Not only is she new to law libraries, having previously worked in public li-
braries, but she is also new to technical services. She’s looking forward to attending the conference and
extending her knowledge of law cataloging as well as meeting other law catalogers.

NATURE AND CITY PHOTOS COMPLIMENTS OF
ED WRZESIEN
FROM MONTANA SCHOOL OF LAW
Enjoying the nature and city photos in this issue of WestPac News?
Stacey Gordon offers this biography of our own WestPac photographer, Ed Wrzesien.
Ed Wrzesien's job title at The University of Montana School of Law is Computer
Support Specialist but unofficially he is the library's artist-in-residence. He is a
talented musician with a degree in music who is part of Missoula's local music scene;
he has composed the scores for a horror movie and a video game. He fairly recently
discovered a talent for photography that goes well with his love for road-tripping and
camping on the beach. Whenever he has the opportunity he travels and takes as many
pictures as possible, much to the delight of his Facebook friends.
The photographs in this newsletter are from recent road-trips around Montana
and to other WestPac states including Idaho, Washington, Northern California and
Utah.
We are sending him to Nevada next month and given the opportunity, he would
love to photograph Hawai'i, Alaska, Wyoming and Western Canada as well for future
editions of WestPac News.

MICHELE FINERTY
CANDIDATE FOR WESTPAC SECRETARY
Michele Finerty
Assistant Director for Technical Services
Gordon D. Schaber Law Library
Pacific McGeorge School of Law
I am honored to be nominated for the position of Executive
Board Secretary. Currently I am serving in my 2nd year as a member
of the WestPac Education Committee. I have been a WestPac
member since 2010, and I was very impressed with the first meeting
I attended last year in Portland—the WestPac members, the
program, the hotel, how the meeting was organized—made for a
very interesting and informative experience.
I am the Assistant Director for Technical Services at the
Pacific McGeorge School of Law’s Gordon D. Schaber Law Library
here in Sacramento, CA, and I have been active in our profession at the national, regional
and special interest sections levels. I currently serve as chair of the AALL Grants
Committee, President of the AALL Animal Law Caucus, and am working with others
throughout California in support of SB1075, the bill to enact the Uniform Electronic Legal
Material Act in the state.
For the last three years, I have coordinated successful NOCALL Sunshine Week
Programs in Sacramento, so I know how important a viable and supportive chapter is to our
membership. For that reason, I look forward in playing a role in keeping WestPac a
strong chapter.
IMPORTANT: The election for the positions of WestPac Vice President/President-
Elect and WestPac Secretary will run May 7-25. Current members will receive an
email with a link to the ballot and candidate statements. There are no contested
elections, but your vote is still important. Thanks for your participation.

TIM KELLY
CANDIDATE FOR WESTPAC
VICE-PRESIDENT/PRESIDENT ELECT
Tim Kelly
Dept. Head of Reference and Research
Willamette College of Law Library
Salem, OR
Thank you for my nomination for Vice-President, Presi-
dent Elect of WestPac. As many of you already know, I love
our regional chapter conventions and how much fun we have as
a group and how much we share and learn. I became known
infamously as Rowdy Azell from my first WestPac convention
in 1994 as part of a murder mystery. I have attached a photo
of the amazing cast for those who may have missed it.
I began my law library career as a law student library intern in cataloging and
reference at Washburn College of Law in 1984 in Topeka, Kansas. After my first law job
clerking for the Honorable Edward Larson of the Kansas Court of Appeals, I taught
paralegals in Kansas City. In 1990, I became Assistant Professor of the Law Library and
Reference Librarian at University of Nebraska-Lincoln Law Library.
In 1994, I came to Willamette College of Law Library in Salem, Oregon, where I am
Head of Reference. I became the WestPac Newsletter distributor in 1994 when we still
folded, stapled, and attached a stamp with address labels. In 2009, I became Editor of the
Westpac Newsletter, doing my best to highlight our members for all of their projects and
hard work. In addition, I have managed the WestPac listserv since its inception in 1998,
adding members, monitoring communications and fixing any technical glitches.
I volunteered as Diversity Conference Coordinator and Diversity Group Leader for
the AALL Annual Convention in 1995. I became an
Editor for The Daily Rose, the AALL Portland Con-
vention newspaper in 2008, doing interviews and col-
lecting stories from the executive board, members and
speakers. As part of a unique librarian exchange
program, I worked at reference for one semester at the
Yale Law School Goldman Library in 1998.
As an officer of WestPac, I hope to further the
goals of keeping our regional chapter vibrant and ef-
fective. I especially look forward to greeting new
members.
