Bay State Milling Co. has acquired a stake in MGM Seed & Grain, which is building a dedicated gluten-free oat processing facility in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. The partnership with MGM, based in Saskatoon, will allow Bay State Milling to provide its customers with a secure supply chain of gluten-free oat products, including rolled, quick and steel-cut oats as well as oat flour. Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM) says it has extended its non-GMO soybean crush capacity in Germany as it sees increasing demand for such meal in Europe. It reported this week its first successful crushing of non-GMO soybeans at its facility in Spyck, northwestern Germany. Agrisoma signs off on UPM deal, expands production of feed and fuel oilseed – 27/07/2017
Agrisoma Biosciences is expanding plantings, production of the oilseed, carinata, after signing a long-term supply agreement with bio-refinery, UPM. The oilseed, brassica carinata, developed in Canada, will be grown as a second crop in winter by farmers in Uruguay, followed by Brazil and Argentina. The oilseed does not produce an edible oil, but has found a market in the biodiesel and bio-jet fuel sector. However, the crush also produces a digestible, protein by-product for use in animal feed. As discussed in my previous blog post (“Your dog is not a wolf! Pet food companies, take note”), the retail trend for pet foods has leaned toward meat-rich and high-protein products. Crude protein in dry dog foods can range from 15.5 percent (Hill's Prescription Diet k/d) to greater than 60 percent (WysongEpigen) depending on dogs’ nutritional needs.
