Rabbi Anthony Fratello
I was recently speaking to a member of the congre-
gation who was trying to explain a holiday to a
non-Jew. He fell back upon a line we’ve all heard.
“Every Jewish Holiday is the same. They tried to
kill us. We survived. Let’s eat.” No doubt this
might bring a smile and perhaps a chuckle, but in
many ways it does reflect some of our holidays.
Passover, Hanukkah, Purim, are but a few that fit
that mold.
In truth, however, our holidays are much more com-
plex and feature a variety of important sub-elements.
We know some of these—for instance, historically
the holiday to send presents was Purim, NOT
Hanukkah—and others are more arcane or unfamil-
iar. For instance, we are supposed to burn the
Hameitz we clear out of our homes prior to
Passover, but did you know you are supposed to
light the fire with the dried out remains of your Lu-
lav from Sukkot?
The Holiday of Shavuot is one of those that may or
may not resonate with us as we might expect. There
are many customs that are observed in communities
across the world. It is customary to eat cheese
blintzes on Shavuot, if for no other reason than an-
other custom is to stay up all night studying, and
who wants a heavy meal at 2:00 AM?
Behind any other consideration, however, is the fact
Shavuot is all about the receiving of Torah. It
commemorates when all of our ancestors stood at
Mt. Sinai to hear together God present the Torah to
the Children of Israel. As such it is COMMUNAL
in its very nature.
This year we are trying a different approach to
Shavuot, this year we are looking back to our
communal roots.
This year we are going to partner with our friends at
Temple Beth Torah in Wellington, for a very special
Shavuot Program. We will gather at 7:00 PM in
Wellington for some study as a community. Both
Rabbi Rosenkranz and I will teach.
We will then have a short Erev Shavuot Service be-
ginning at 8:00 PM, which will be capped off with a
festive Oneg. I invite you all to come and partici-
pate.
May the joy of all of our Holidays fill you and your
family with life, love, and peace.

Cantor Judith Borden Ovadia
In biblical times, each day, beginning on the second
day of Pesach, one Omer (a sheaf of grain) was
brought to the Temple and counted until seven
weeks of offerings (forty-nine days) was tallied.
This custom of Counting The Omer each day, mark-
ing the passing of days from Passover until Shavuot
continues to the present time.
The significance of the Counting of the Omer (in
Hebrew, Sefirat Ha-Omer) is a spiritual ascendance
from the bondage of Egypt (marked by Passover) to
the acceptance of the Torah at Sinai (marked by
Shavuot). By counting off the days one by one, we
are instructed also to grow in awareness from our
own current state of religious expression toward the
opportunities and mandates of divine revelation.
Coming from a place of enslavement, literally or
metaphorically, requires a re-conditioning, a period
of transition in which one is oriented and prepared
for what comes next. Life as a free person requires
training; without it, one might regress to the familiar
mindset and behavior of a slave. In order to accept
the commandments the Israelites must be of sound
mind and body, and not under duress. Otherwise,
there would be no meaning in their choice. There-
fore, a delay from the time of the exodus to the rev-
elation is necessary for them to process what has
happened and recognize their new status as free in-
dividuals and a new nation.
Similarly, we as modern Jews require a period of
time in our spiritual practice to capitalize upon the
offerings of the Festival of Shavuot. It comes on the
heals of Passover, our most engaging holiday, the
one that involves the home more than the syna-
gogue, that we are trained to enact, not observe,
from earliest childhood. The phrase “a reminder of
the Exodus from Egypt” occurs in our liturgy
throughout the year, hearkening back to the Seder
and the Haggadah. Passover is the Festival that
marks the central event in the story of Judaism.
Additionally, we are taught that we must not only
learn about the events of the exodus, but that we
are required to consider ourselves as having per-
sonally escaped slavery in Egypt. This sort of psy-
chological conditioning is a deliberate and effec-
tive method for inculcating the Jewish psyche
with a sense of personal identification with our
ancestors’ travail. Thus we too require a ritual
process to transition from the mentality of a re-
deemed slave to that of an empowered free per-
son. The Counting of the Omer is an acknowl-
edgement that we are in a liminal period, but one
that has a finite duration.
Each of us has our own unique, personal, life his-
tory – the story of the road we have travelled. The
lessons we have learned, the scars we bear, the
glory, the memories, all shape our worldviews.
The process of counting each day from Passover
until Shavuot is a ritual opportunity of which we
may avail ourselves. This mitzvah is aligned with
one of the central teachings of Judaism, which ex-
horts us to “number our days that we may get us a
heart of wisdom.” (Psalm 90:12.) We may emerge
on the other side rededicated to our spiritual prac-
tice, or perhaps to our personal growth and self-
care. The choice is ours.

Wow! It’s hard to believe the school year is ending! This
has been such an incredible year getting to know all of
the families here at TSS. We accomplished SO MUCH
this year together that I can’t wait to see the heights we
will reach next year!
While there are so many amazing memories, some high-
lights from this year were: a Consecration Ceremony
with over 20 new students to our Religious school, an
amazing Purim Carnival put together by our STARY
Youth Group, our 6th-8th Graders being a part of the
Matzah Factory, over 100 people coming out on a beau-
tiful, sunny day to glean cucumbers to be donated to the
less fortunate on Good Deeds Day, over 200 people par-
ticipating in our in-house Mitzvah Day, our 5th Graders
working all year with our School Twinning partner in
Israel, and soon, our wonderful Confirmation ceremony
for our 18 10th Grade students.
We are already looking towards next year, so be on the
lookout for more information and registration coming
soon.
If you know any high school students, get ready to share
some amazing information with them as we are EX-
PANDING our program to include 11th & 12th Grade
students in a BRAND NEW, all-elective based program!
More information and registration will be upcoming, but
I am thrilled to be able to share this!
I would like to invite all of you to join us for services on
Friday, May 12th at 7:00 p.m. as we recognize our teach-
ers and all the hard work they have put in this year.
Thank you again for sharing your families with us and I
hope your school years end wonderfully and your sum-
mers are as fun-filled and exciting as you want them to
be!

AVDA, to help victims of domestic abuse .
I’m proud to become a Bar Mitzvah: For me, the traditions
of Judaism are very important because of my family’s history.
I want to bring those traditions into my adult life and having a
Bar Mitzvah is the beginning of that.

B’nei Mitzvah Project: I raised money for the Shoe Project in
Santo Tomas, Nicaragua. Some of the kids there don’t have
shoes, which means since they have to walk to school, if they
don’t have shoes, they don’t go to school. This program pro-
vides these children with shoes, school supplies and lunch so
that they get the chance to become educated and get a chance at
a better life. My family and friends sponsored me to walk – for
each mile I walked, we were able to buy one pair of shoes. I
walked 53 miles, and in January, 53 children received their
shoes in Nicaragua.

Next month, on Thursday May 18, Brotherhood will
be bringing in the Sheriff’s Department to teach us
about personal safety and protecting ourselves from
becoming victims of crime. Do you know what to
do if someone follows you in a parking lot? What
would you do if a mugger tried to grab your purse of
or lift your wallet? Do you ever feel worried when
you’re walking alone to your car? Join us and learn
what steps you can take to avoid these difficult situa-
tions and feel safe. This is an important presentation
and everyone should make an effort to attend. All
members are invited.
And don’t forget, there’s still space available on our
upcoming Caribbean cruise on Celebrity this
December. Call Sand & C Travel at 736-3880 to
learn about hundreds of dollars in FREE perks you
can claim when you book your cabin.
.
Granted…it was not exactly like Dancing with the
Stars…and there was no glitzy mirror ball trophy
awarded at the end of the night. But that didn’t
stop the rest of us from having a wonderful time
learning the Latin Salsa on Thursday evening,
April 20 as TSS Brotherhood hosted an evening of
Ballroom Dance instruction.
As those of us aspiring to become Fred and Ginger
tried our best not to look silly, two professional in-
structors wowed us with their rhythm and dazzling
footwork. We tripped the light fantastic, laughed a
lot and enjoyed some yummy refreshments
graciously provided by Barbara Weiss and
TSS Sisterhood.

OPEN HOUSE
MAY 21, 2017

BRING A FRIEND
SHOW OFF YOUR
TEMPLE
April showers bring May flowers, and one of the
most celebrated days of the year, which is
MOTHERS DAY. It’s a day you reflect on the
amazing women that you call Mom. If you are for-
tunate enough to still have her, you are still blessed.
For those of us that no longer have our mothers, we
think of them often and smile. Just remember that
they are always watching over us.
Our OPEN HOUSE is on May 21, 2017. It is a spe-
cial day at the Temple, where we get to meet new
faces, who we hope will join our Temple Family. It
is a chance to meet our Rabbi Fratello, Cantor
Ovadia, Josh Ackerman our Director of Education
and of course our new President, Lisa Cuthbertson.
Please tell your friends and neighbors about our
OPEN HOUSE and get a jump on registering their
children in our Hebrew School.
It is amazing the many new events that you can find
in our Temple; all you need to do is come and
spread the word. The opportunities are endless.
