New TLDs - What is the impact in 2009 with 200 new TLDs?
New TLDs – Impact to Domain Buyers
Impact to Brand Holders - forces decision to protect brand over new TLDs Increase cost Increases complexity
Impact to Domain Aggregators None initially – because few of the new extensions will have direct
navigation traffic – YET In the long run, some of the new names may prove to stick, and good
names will be in the mix.
Impact to Domain Investors New investors will want in on ground floor of new TLDs Current investors may drop of marginal domain TLDs, in favor of trying
new TLDs
New TLDs – Impact to Current TLDs
Observations and my predictions Impact to premium domain names - short term impact is none, long term
impact is little. Cream will always rise to the top Direct navigation traffic will not change patterns overnight – so these
names will continue to be most attractive COM is still global leader and most recognized TLD. Introduction of new
TLDs to date has not affected that much. ccTLD use will rise MOBI use will continue to rise as more applications, services, and
corporate Web sites turn to this domain It is formable competitive landscape for any new TLDs to enter My prediction – is that speculative registration of these domains will be
brisk for certain niche TLDs, but most new TLDs will struggle to get a ROI in the first few years
These names will not make it into the top 100 list of aftermarket domains for a couple of years, if not longer. (DNJOURNAL’s Global Contenders list)
