PV Elite Tips and trick – how to…

Some of little things you might not know

The order the vessel is built

The order the vessel is built

Overview:

Set the nozzles to be computed to the MAWP (I’ll

show you how to do this)

Built for internal pressure only (no vacuum) – only the

shell and heads

Check all the thickness are adequate

Install the operating liquid

Now set the external (vacuum) pressure

Install vacuum rings or thicken components

Install any nozzles

Now to see this strategy in action 2

Start with Design Constraints

Fill in everything

except the external

pressure

3

Build the vessel to completion

Check all the thickness are Ok

4

Now enter the operating liquid

5

Enter the External pressure – back

the Design Constraints screen

The external

pressure here

6

Now add vacuum rings or thicken

Here is the maximum

distance between the rings

Or we could make the shell

thicker – we have a choice

7

Now add the nozzles

We have now completed

the vessel

But, we now look closer

at the nozzle calculation

8

The vessel has an MAWP - here

MAWP 326.677 psi

Design pressure 100 psi

What about the nozzle pressure ?

9

This is the nozzle calculation

Design pressure 100 psi

Vessel MAWP is 326 psi

The Nozzle could limit the MAWP

of the vessel if it cannot take that

pressure

10

Let us look at the Load Cases tab

This is the problem – nozzle pressure based on Design Pressure

However there are four choices for the nozzle design pressure

We can examine each choice in turn

11

Nozzle Design Pressure Options

Liquid level

MAWP is here

Vessel MAWP is not computed for the nozzle

MAWP is here

MAWP is here

If we use the vessel MAWP for the nozzle,

then the nozzle will not control the MAWP of

the overall vessel

12

15

The ‘List Dialog’ is very useful with

nozzle problems

The list dialog allows you to do a lot of things to modify a vessel,

especially with nozzle problems

16

The ‘List Dialog’ is very useful with

nozzle problems

Suppose you have install many nozzles in an Elliptical head like this

But, this should have been a Torispherical head

You change the head to Torispherical, however,

this is what happens

All those nozzle have disappeared !

17

The ‘List Dialog’ is very useful with

nozzle problems

All those nozzle have disappeared !

18

The ‘List Dialog’ is very useful with

nozzle problems

This List Dialog comes to your rescue – if you knew about before changing

the head

In the List Dialog screen select all the nozzle and press <Ctl>+C to save them

21

The ‘List Dialog’ is very useful with

nozzle problems

Open the List Dialog again, and add a new row

Put your mouse cursor here, and press <Ctl>+V

and your nozzle are retuned

nozzle problems

Here are the restored nozzles

The ‘List Dialog’ can be used to

add nozzles

23

The ‘List Dialog’ can be used to

add nozzles

Suppose you wanted to copy a nozzle from one location to another

From here

To here

Use the List Dialog again to accomplish this

Add a row to make room for the new nozzle

Select the first row (click on tab 1)

Press <Ctl>+C to copy it

24

The ‘List Dialog’ can be used to

add nozzles

Put cursor in row 2. Now press <Ctl>+v to add the new nozzle in row 2

From here

To here

A new nozzle is added, but with identical information.

Change the name and any other details.

Here is the nozzle you copied.

Put cursor in row 2. Now press <Ctl>+v to add the new nozzle in row 2

25

The ‘List Dialog’ can be used for

other things as well

You can:

Copy, change and delete vacuum rings

Copy change and delete platforms

Move any item that is attached to the vessel

Copy whole bunches of stuff at once

There is one more thing we have to look at before we leave List Dialog

26

Changing from Imperial to Metric –

nozzle problems

All the dimensions are in mm except the nozzle diameter

The diameter should be in mm, not inches

We enlist the services of the List Dialog again to put matters straight

27

Now consider the effects of wind

It is important how we build a vertical tower

This is the wind speed profile. Altitude versus Wind Speed

Like this Or like this Wind speed

Alt

de

These are the forces from the wind

28

Now consider the effects of wind

The vessel on the left would need a thick shell at the bottom, and a thin

shell at the top. This is a more economical design

Like this Or like this Wind speed

Alt

de

The vessel on the right would need a thick shell the whole length

29

Put PV Elite on automatic drive

PV Elite can automatically check the vessel for code required components

We find this using the Design Constraints tab

For example, use this little button

However, use these functions only if you know what you are doing

Your vessel can go where you do not want it to go !

30

The value of the Status Line

Effective length for external pressure

Maximum external pressure

Element 2 of 3 elements

From and to the Datum Line

Component facing Up or Down

Required thickness for internal pressure

52

We can also section the model

Click on the Insert Cutting plane icon

We now see the model insides exposed by the cutting plane

This is useful to check any alignment

53

The U-1 Form

Pressure vessels are registered by the Nation Board on Inspectors

This is done by submitting a standard form – the U-1 form

This is how get PV Elite to fill in most of the information

Run the output processor (get the calculations)

On tool bar press this icon

Now you see the blank form

Code Case 2695

In 2012, ASME issued a new exciting code case, which allows ASME Section

VIII, Division 1 vessels to be analysed in accordance with Division 2

The only proviso is that Division 1 stress values be used

What are the advantages:

Heads can be thinner

Nozzle re-pads can be smaller

Vacuum conditions may produce thinner shells

Saving in welding consumables

Lighter manipulating and transport weights
