WORSHIP DIRECTORY
Special to JIM
Sometimes homeowners are ready to go beyond updating the landscape. They’re ready to do more than
dig out the overgrown foundation beds and plant a few mophead hydrangeas. Sometimes real change is in order. And sometimes, that means whole house renovations.
In the past decade, many people have shown interest in older home remodels. Perhaps this is due to media trends pushing house flipping and renovations, or maybe it’s the ability to have a well built home, on a large lot, without the new home price tag. Successful remodels blend the best of the old with the best of the new.
“When remodeling an older home it is important to create a design that melds easily into the existing neighborhood and landscape,” says Adam Baslow, Partner at New Leaf Builders. Baslow should know. The Charleston Trident Homebuilders Association has awarded the James Island builder several Prism Awards, including best remodel under $150K in 2012.
According to Randall Sandin, Carolina One Real Estate Agent and head of sales for New Leaf Builders, home remodels allow families to achieve the amenities of newer homes, while living in an established neighborhood. “In the past year I have sold about 5 homes in this neighborhood,” says Sandin, “and the average person has lived there for 20 plus years.”
The remodeled, all brick, Ayers Drive home has been re-built from top to bottom, including a demolition, master bedroom addition, a 30 year architectural shingled roof, new HVAC unit and corresponding ductwork, new subfloor, insulation, electrical, and landscaping.
Extensive renovations like this one can make a house more comfortable and easier to sell in the future, but the commitment is a significant one. Homeowners who are ready for a big change should seek the advice of qualified builders. All others should head to the garden center.
