New land use plan for Ny-Ålesund

Why a new plan?• The land-use plan will be customized to the new standardized drawing regulations for

land-use plans at Svalbard.

• The sub-plan for the geodetic observatory will be incorporated in the land-use plan, so that we only will have one valid plan in Ny-Ålesund

• In 2012 the Governor did archaeological registrations, that led to some new cultural heritage areas

• New buildings that are not in the plan

• Building for light sensitive instruments outside town

• New building areas

• Changed drinking water catchment area – the existing one is wrong

• Include the existing and extended borrow pit by Tvillingvann

•Give public notice that planning is about to begin

•Work out a planning programme

•Prepare a draft plan

•Draft plan deposited for public inspection

●2015

•Submit the finalized plan proposal to the Governor

•The Governor approves the plan – Spring 2015

The process

New building areasAreas for dwellings, offices, common buildings and research buildings

Preferences for placement:

•Near by the other research / dwelling buildings in town

•Close to existing infrastructure

•Preserve existing scientific instruments

•Protect the bird sanctuaries and the green areas in town

•Preserve the cultural heritage areas

●We need inputs from the research community to be able to include all the different aspects that need to be taken care of in the plan.

●Comments about activities that will make use of new land or changed use of land.

●We appreciate inputs as early as possible.

●The working language for the overall planning process will be Norwegian.

●Information needed for the international scientific community to make comments to the

draft plan will be provided in English.

●When the land-use plan is approved by the Norwegian authorities the plan will be

translated into English.
