NEURO-HYPNOTHERAPYTHE FIRST OF ITS KIND IN MALAYSIA

HIRO KOO'S BACKGROUND:

• Hiro Koo completed his international diploma in clinical hypnosis(Lond.) and graduated with a BSocSc(Hons) in Psychology. Acertified EEG biofeedback specialist (S.B.C.I.A), a registeredclinical hypnotherapist (MSCH, AHPM, APA-The Society ofPsychological Hypnosis, Malaysian Psychological Association), alicensed Hypno-Band practitioner (UK) and an EmotionalFreedom Technique (EFT) practitioner, Hiro Koo is currentlyattached to Spectrum of Life Proactive Healthcare Centre (SOL)as a psychologist. Hiro Koo's expertise in the field of clinicalhypnotherapy, EEG biofeedback therapy, complementary andalternative medicine has placed him in great position to help usunderstand how our brain and subconscious mind play apredominant role in our mental, emotional and physical health. With specifics on how to get this powerful resource working for uson a daily basis, wellness can therefore be attained.

DO YOU KNOW?

• All of our mind activity can be measured scientifically byutilizing an EEG biofeedback tool. With our Neuro-Hypnotherapy technology, you can scientifically see yourselfgoing into states of “Alpha", "Theta", and "Delta”, and thesethree levels can be considered states or depths of Hypnosis.

• Misconceptions about hypnotherapy:

• You will not become unconscious and you will be aware of everything at alltimes.

• Your will is not weakened in any way.• You are in control and cannot be made to do anything against your will.• You will not begin to reveal information you wish to keep secret.• Hypnosis is not sleep.

• One common misconception is that a hypnotized person loses their will and ispartially or completely under the command of the hypnotist. Nothing could befurther from the truth. This unfortunate belief is reinforced by many stagehypnotists. You are in control of yourself, and cannot be made to do anythingthat is against your will.

• Hypnosis, particularly the deeper forms, can appear to be like sleep becausethe person's body is typically very still and quiet. There is usually a greatdeal of mental activity, and measurements of brain activity duringhypnosis that shows a significant level of neurological activity.

PSYCHOANALYTIC APPROACH:FREUD’S MODEL OF HYPNOSIS

• Freud initially utilized hypnosis to help remove psychosomaticsymptoms from patients who suffered from what we would now calla somatoform disorder. These patients suffered from medicalcomplaints like seizures, muscular spasms, and paralysis of theirlimbs that was transient and/or was not thought to be the entirelythe result of a general medical condition.

• Freud learned that he could temporarily or permanently reducemany of these symptoms using direct hypnotic suggestions forthe symptoms to be reversed. (e.g.,: “Your arm is calm again andwill no longer spasm.”)

• Freud also believed that Hypnosis allowed him access tomemories within the patient’s unconscious mind which hadbeen previously repressed.

• Eventually, Freud began using free association instead of hypnosisas a way of accessing the unconscious.

12

HYPNOSIS AS A CLINICAL TOOL• Hypnosis is generally used in two ways as a

clinical tool:A. Making Direct Suggestions for

Symptom ReductionB. Using hypnosis as an adjunct to other

forms of psychotherapy (e.g., CBT).

13

A. MAKING DIRECT SUGGESTIONS FORSYMPTOM REDUCTION

• Example – A hypnotist suggests to a patientundergoing a painful medical procedure (e.g.,surgery, a lumbar puncture, spinal tap) that theaffected body part (i.e., the back) is numb andinsensitive to pain.

• This is a classic use of hypnosis.

14

B. PRESENTING COGNITIVE-BEHAVIORAL THERAPY PLUS HYPNOSIS

• Research suggests that using a combination of hypnosis and CBTimproves outcomes for about 70% of patients relative to using CBTalone (Kirsch et al., 1995).

• Examples:• Progressive Muscle Relaxation becomes hypnotic relaxation.• Guided Imagery becomes hypnotic imagery.• Systematic Desensitization becomes hypnotic desensitization.• Coping self-statements become coping self-suggestions.

15

C. PRESENTING NEUROFEEDBACKPLUS HYPNOSIS

• Neuro-Hypnotherapy is based on EEG brainwavefrequency monitoring. It is non-invasive, painlessand safe with no side effects.

Traditional Hypnotherapy Neuro-hypnotherapyDepths of Hypnosis – Usingphysiological measures to quantifythe depth of the hypnotic trance.

Assessment - assessment is noticingclient's personal history, appearance and behaviour etc.

Result - Based on client ortherapist’s observation which couldbe based on subjective feeling.

Coverage - Mostly deal withpsychological or emotionaldisorders.

Depths of Hypnosis – Based on EEGbiofeedback tool, you canscientifically see yourself going intostates of “Alpha", "Theta", and"Delta”, and these three levels canbe considered states or depths ofHypnosis.

Assessment - Based on Neuro-hypnotherapy technique andbrainwaves assessment tounderstand an individual more.

Result - Based on scientifically resultfrom the Neuro-hypnotherapy andbrainwaves readings.

Coverage - Able to help variousphysical, mental performance, certain medical conditions, psychological and emotionalproblems
