Parts of the Nervous System

1. Central Nervous System (CNS)

O Includes:O Brain

O It is the control centerO Takes signals from the sense organsO Processes the infoO Sends out new signal telling the body

what to do.

O Spinal cordO A tube of neurons

2. Peripheral Nervous System

O Nerves that extend beyond the brain and spinal cord.

3. Autonomic Nervous System

O Controls the parts of the body that act without thinking, such as: stomach, intestines, glands…

What is a Nerve?O Nerves are the body’s major cables

and contain hundreds of neuron fibers.

O The fibers run to every nook and cranny of the body.

What is a Neuron?O The nervous system is made up of

cells called neurons.

O They have spindly fibers that carry electrical signals.

O Some neurons (nerve cells) are several feet long!

ReflexesO When you touch something hot or cold

your body sends signals to the brain to tell the body how to react.

O Process:O Cells in hand detected heat. O Nerves send message to spinal cord.O Spinal cord decides what to do.O Nerves from spinal cord tell the hand

what to do.O Message is to let go of the object.
