Intent to Contribute Statement:
Linda Ackerman, Perinatal Services Director/CEL, and the NICU Staff at AMC created a parents guide to educate
families with newborns who experience withdrawal symptoms caused by the effects of maternal drug use from a
Caring Science perspective. This information will put families at ease providing comfort and open dialogue with
the healthcare providers to ensure both mother and baby receive the best possible care and support. This guide
gives parents knowledge about what tools (Neonatal Abstinence Scoring System) our healthcare providers use,
why its important, how to respond to withdrawal symptoms, and how the parents play a special role in
supporting their baby with the healthcare team.
