Tip #4 – Timing & Deferring

If you want the job: “Today’s meeting has been informative, and I’m glad to know you’re interested in me. Based on what I’ve heard, I’m also interested and would be glad to consider your best offer as we move along in the process.”

What to say when they pop the question too early…

Tip #4 – Timing & Deferring

You can ask them what they’re thinking of offering: “As we’re both fact-finding at this point, what are you thinking this position is going to pay?”

Alternatively: “What do you have budgeted for this position?”

What to say when they pop the question too early…

Tip #4 – Timing & Deferring

If you don’t know what else is on the table yet: “For me, the right opportunity is about more than just the salary. For instance, I would also be considering benefits and other intangibles as we move forward. So, it’s hard to say exactly what salary I’ll need until I know more.”

What to say when they pop the question too early…

Tip #5 – Talking Dollars

Use ranges rather than definitive numbers…

Don’t say: “I’m looking for $60-65K.”

Do say: “I’m currently considering positions in the low to mid 60’s.”

Tip #5 – Talking Dollars

Previously earned higher, but willing to earn less...

“I want you to know that I’m negotiable. I see so much potential here for _(reason you are attracted to the opportunity)_. At my previous position I earned x. Of course, I would love to earn that or greater, however, as I said, I’m negotiable since it about more than just the money for me.”

Tip #5 – Talking Dollars

Previously earned less than market value...

“I’ve done some research in the market and now realize that I was undervalued in my previous position. I earned x, and I’m now looking for market value for my experience, education and skills.”

Tip #5 – Talking Dollars

Tip For Cover Letters

“My salary is negotiable based on the job responsibilities and the total compensation package.”
