KANDY — The University ofPeradeniya and the Peradeniya police areinvestigating the setting off of dangerousfirecrackers in close proximity to theAkbar Hall of residence on Sunday (26)night. A number of students wereinjured.

According to sources, a group of stu-dents celebrating the birth anniversary of

the LTTE leader was responsible for set-ting the crackers off.

The student community of theEngineering Faculty, in particular resi-dential students of Akbar Hall, yesterday(27) staged a protest against the highhanded action of lighting crackers in thepremises of their hall. Thet marched tothe administration block of the universi-ty calling for an investigation into theincident and for enhanced security to the

occupants of the hall of residencebecause they feared the threat ofunscrupulous elements within the prem-ises.

The United States yesterday reject-ed the view expressed by LTTE leaderV. Prabhakaran, in his November 27speech, that there is no alternate solu-tion to the problem faced by the Tamilpeople other than the establishmentof a separate state. United StatesAmbassador Robert O. Blake said thatthey see an open path to the resolu-tion of the problem. “This problemcan be solved through a process ofsustained negotiations”.

The views expressed by the LTTEleader cannot be accepted. TheGovernment of Sri Lanka could pro-pose a solution based on an United SriLanka and this would very well be thebasis for discussions, he added.

Responding to a question,Ambassador Blake said that theLTTE is a proscribed institution inthe USA and there is no way that theycould obtain either funds or armsfrom within the USA. The recent

arrest of 15 suspects by the FBI, in afailed attempt to procure arms, is evi-dence of the vigorous action taken bythe US government to enforce the banon the LTTE.

He was speaking at a media brief-ing held in connection with the com-pletion of nine buildings which wereconverted into ones that were accessi-ble for disabled persons.

This project was jointly imple-mented by USAID and the UK basedMotivation Charitable Trust fundedby a US$450,000 grant from USAID.

Accessibility is important to physi-cally disabled people in order thatthey are able to live their lives with-out being dependent on others, hesaid.

invalidating the merger of the Northand the East, the LTTE’s bid to gaininternational assistance via PTOMS(Tsunami Sahana Mandalaya) sufferedan irreversible setback, said JVPParliamentarian and General Secretaryof the National Patriotic Movement,Wimal Weerawansa. He was speaking atthe Janapranamabhani (People’sSalutation) ceremony held at theSugathadasa Stadium yesterday to felici-tate the legal profession and others whowere instrumental in filing aFundamental Rights application in theSupreme Court against the amalgama-tion of the North and the East.

“The time has come to release the peo-ple of the North-East from the hopelesssituation arising out of the separatestate prison, he stressed. The Cease FireAgreement (CFA) gave the LTTE a meas-ure of legality for their Eelam, goal. TheLTTE with the backing of foreign pow-ers has now set its goal of obtaininglegal recognition for Eelam, while con-tinuing to stay within the CFA, he point-ed out. If the government continues toignore the Supreme Court ruling andrefrains from de-merging the North andthe East, which was set up under the J. R.Jayewardene regime, a mass agitationalcampaign would be launched by the JVPagainst the government”, he warned.

Movement said that it was 19 years aftermerging the two provinces that thedemerger of the North and the East wasruled by the Supreme Court. For thatvictory, the nation should pay tribute toJVP, he emphasised. The demerger is thefirst salvo towards national liberation,he added.

JVP MP for Trincomalee JayanthaWijesekera, who was a petitioner to theFR case, also spoke.

Those who received awards for filingthe petition were Wasantha Piyatissa,MP, Ampara, Attorneys at Law ManoriJinadasa, Gomin Dayasiri and postalpeon Buhari.

The National Patriotic Front on Tuesday honoured Professor G. H. Peiris, lawyers H. L de Silva, PC,Gomin Dayasri, PC, S.L Gunasekera, PC, JVP MP Jayantha Wijesekera (Trincomalee District), JVP MPWasantha Peiris (Ampara District) and A. S. M. Buhari of Ampara for their commitment and dedicationto secure the recent Supreme Court ruling on the de-merger of the Eastern Province from the North.Dayasri receives his award from JVP parliamentary group leader Wimal Weerawansa.

The University is looking for a highly motivated individual capable of working asa team member with a group of doctors. Training in counselling will be an addedqualification.

Qualifications:Medical Degree of a recognized University with at least 03 years experience asa Medical Practitioner (Excluding period of internship)

Salary Scale : Rs. 27485 — 585 X 10; 735 X 10 - 40685 p.m. (UMO - 1)

In addition to the salary, the cost of living allowance of Rs. 1375/= will be paid.

Notes1. The selected candidate will be considered for placement on a point of the

above salary scale, depending on his/her qualifications and experience.

2. The holders of the posts of Medical Officer after confirmation in theappointment will be eligible for Sabbatical Leave of one year’s durationwith pay or two years’ duration without pay on completion of seven yearsof service.
