Beavers, often referred to as nature’s engineers for their ability to create dams and other structures, can be found in many regional parks. These highly-adapted aquatic mammals build dams to create waterbodies to protect against predators (e.g. coyotes and cougars) and to increase their access to foraging areas. In summer, beavers eat aquatic plants; in winter they feed on the bark and inner parts of trees including red alder, black cottonwood, trembling aspen, paper birch and willow. The dams also create amazingly diverse wetlands that can help recharge groundwater, decrease peak
flows caused by storms and improve overall water quality. At the same time, wetlands provide habitat for many other species including amphibians and birds.Sometimes beaver activity can cause unwanted flooding, infrastructure damage, tree damage and barriers to fish migration. Recognizing their contribution to habitat diversity, Metro Vancouver Regional Parks accommodates beaver activity wherever possible. Sometimes, when their engineering feats put infrastructure at risk, we intervene and try to outsmart the beaver (which isn’t easy).
Some tricks include installing a pipe through dams to maintain a certain pond level, but prevent flooding. We also wrap tree trunks with wire to keep them from being used as building materials and chew toys, and install culvert guards to prevent plugging or install fencing to exclude beavers from certain areas.Living with beavers can be a challenge, but most of the time the benefits outweigh the cost and effort.

Humans of Regional ParksA glimpse into Derby Reach Regional Park through the eyes of its visitors. For stories from other Metro Vancouver regional parks, visit www.metrovancouver.org (search ‘humans of regional parks’).
“I’ve been coming around this neck of the woods since 1975. I saw it turn into a park. Then I got involved with Derby Reach/Brae Island Parks Association about 14 years ago. We so desperately need these big open areas. It’s where you can decompress. If you’re tired of living in a townhouse or apartment in the city, you can come here and spread your arms out.”
“We’re both from Syria. I have been in Canada 2 years, 4 months. No English before. Because I live here close to this park, usually 4 times a week we come here with my family, with his family, do barbeque, fishing. Beautiful park.”
