Early life• Born as Nancy Patricia D'Alesandro

March 26, 1940 in Baltimore, Maryland.

• Was the last of six children and the first daughter.

• Father is Thomas D’Alesandro, Jr., who was a Congressman from Maryland and the Mayor of Maryland. Mother Annunciata dropped out of law school to marry, then became the leader of the local Democratic Women’s Club.

• At age 7, she stood beside her father when he was sworn in as Baltimore's first Italian-American Mayor in 1947.

Moving up…• She attended the Institute of

Notre Dame, which was a Catholic all girls school.

• Wanted to become a priest because she saw the power the priests had in the church.

• She married her first boyfriend, Paul Pelosi a successful businessman.

• Moved to New York and had 5 children within 6 years.

Cont…• In 1969 they moved to San Francisco. • She volunteered for Democratic causes

and worked in the campaigns for Congressman Phillip Burton.

• She became well known in politics within the next year.

• 1981 she was elected to chair of the state’s Democratic Party.

• 1983 Burton died and his wife took his spot. The wife was diagnosed with cancer and asked Pelosi to take her seat.

• She has represented Congress in San Francisco ever since.

• Worked to increase funding for AIDS, education and environmental protection.

• Tried to block communist China from receiving “most favored nation” trading status.

and CAFTA. • Was in favor of the 700 mile

walk along the Mexican border.

• Voted for House resolution offering “unequivocal support and appreciation to the president…for his firm leadership and decisive action”

• Voiced no objections to Bush’s proposals.

Today…• Pelosi is a multi-millionaire that is still

living. • Her husband’s portfolio of

commercial real estate makes a lot of money.

• The Pelosis’ net is worth at least $25 million and is said to reach as high as $92 million.

• They own a small office building in San Francisco and another in the suburbs of Marin County. They also own stock in Microsoft and AT&T.
