"During the night (of June l7th) General Griffin got his batteriesup into the Norfolk Railroad cut, which at that pomt curved to thenorth, and ours was disposed so that we could rake the cut for a on.iderable distance. Richardson's took position to our right, and nearLe Avery house, while Phillips came up on the left. This position wabout 600 yards from the enemy's main works at that pout. Theswere new works in a second line, and the outer mtrenchn e, s that hhad abandoned on the day before,-ran along near our positu n A aas we could sec to the right were long lines of infantry toward theworks The ground was much broken, and as the lines conformedthe ground, it had the appearance of great waves of men
