ORIGIN OF THE CONCEPT

The ideas struck me when my friends and I were taking a trip in the hills and one long bus ride after the other, we realised that we do not know the basic geography of our country.

As I began to question this problem further, I realised that it wasn’t just us, but most of generation.

Creating a medium through which people know the basic facts about India. As citizens of this country, I felt like we do not know the most basic

things about our country that we should know. Information like states, capitals, rivers, oceans, languages etc.

As a generation, we do not know the basics about our nation and although we learnt it in school, most of us have forgotten it. Making the same information more easily available and in an

interesting format will probably help in solving this problem.

Although this product will be for all age groups, my target audience is for the youth of today.

FINDINGS

CONCLUSION

From the survey I gathered that:

1. Most people feel like they know the basic geography of India.

2. They all believe that we should know the basic geography

3. Some people do make an effort to read up about the history and geography

4. People remember only some of the history taught to them in school, however lots of them remember most of it.

5. People would rather use their phones/tablets than carry a paper map. However, almost an equal number of people would still carry a paper map instead.

People in the age of 18-25 believe that they should know the basic geog-raphy of India. Based on the findings, most of them do not remember all the geography taught to themin school. The information is the same as whatwas taught to us in school and therefore the

same information must be designed in such a manner that it has some retention power.While more that 50% people would rather usetheir phones, 45% people would still prefer printed maps. The same proj-ect can be carried forward in the future through digital media.

TONE OF VOICE

KEY RESPONSE

The tone of voice is simple, crisp, interesting and visually en-gaging.

The information that is provided in the map will be very easy to understand and interesting,

The audience should feel like this information is easy to under-stand and visually engaging.

The audience should think of the map as a useful product and not another mountain of information.

INSPIRATION BASED RESEARCH

ContentHighlights 38 spots around the city, including the best tea shop in Chinatown, a mini-park 11 stories in the air, a private library, and a bunch of amazing restaurants.

ConstructionThe map is printed on waterproof tear-resistant Tyvek. It’s then folded up us-ing an origami technique that allows it to smoothly open and close in one motion, and makes it impossible to misfold.

COUNTRY OR STATE?

Since India is very large country and putting in so much infor-mation about a country like India into one single map is proba-bly not the best option. Therefore, instead of a whole country, I decided to do a state instead.

WHY KARNATAKA?

1. FAMILIARITY

Since I couldn’t physically go to the state, choosing a state I have been to and know something about made sense. I also have family in Karnataka soI could get first hand information.

2. HISTORY

I wanted to choose a state that was historicaly interesting. Karnataka has been ruled by many important Kingdoms like Chalukyas, the Satavahanas and the Kadambas. Remnants of these kingdomsstill exist in the state.

3. TOPOGRAPHY

Topgraphically, Karnataka is a very interesting state. The whole state lies on the Deccan Plateau, It has a 300 km long coastline, it has hill stations and some of the best coffee estates of the country and is also home to the 2nd highest waterfall in India.

4. CULTURE

Karnataka is also culturally very diverse. This is also because of the many king-doms that have ruled the state resulting in many kinds of festivals, food, dance forms, paintings, music etc.

RESEARCH ON KARNATAKA

I used many methods of research for my project. I got first hand informtion from people who live in Karntaka. The inevitable World Wide Web, existing guide books on Karnataka and books on maps.

What should be there in the map?

The content for this map was one of the most important things. The map should be

highly informative but not boring. As a tourist, one would want to know the Major cities, places of historical importance, luxurious beaches, places of wildlife importance and not to forget, how to get there.

As a state, Karnataka has a lot to offer like pristine beaches, age old temples, ruins, some of the best coffee estates, metropolitan cities, great food and people.

PURPOSE OF THE MAP

The purpose of this map is to help people understand the state better. To present all information under one roof and make it interesting. The problem is not that the information doesn’t exist, it’s that people forget. Making the map interesting and informative is the challenge.

LOOK & FEEL

The map should look like it belongs to the state of karnataka. It should be illustrative and fun. It should be playful yet informative. It should be a bright and

happy map since maps are mostly dull and boring to look at.

Karnata is famous for sandalwood, coffee and silk therefore I decided to derive my color scheme from them.

PROTOTYPE

A rough layout of the map on paper. To see which font size works, how much space I have to work on and what all I can fit in.I made a rough outline of the state, drew some icons, made

the borders, road map etc and put different text sizes to check what works.Doing this gave me a better idea of what I want the end product to look like.

For the back of the map, I had first thought of doing a Miura Ori fold which is a japanese origami fold.Although the fold and mech-anismwas very interesting, creating a fold that the user probably won’t be able to do again did not make sense.

Therefore I chose to do a basic 4- way fold. You fold the map vertically into 4 parts and horizontally into 4 parts, giving you 16 rectangles. These then fold up to create a small rectnge.

REFLECTIONS

This project started of as a thought at the back of my mind and has grown into full scale project.When I began doing this project, I did not expect it to be such a tough and detailed project. Tracing the maps, figuring out how much content to put, segregating information put all my knowledge to queston. This project however, was a lot of fun since I got to discover so many new places and

found out about places I did not know existed, I realised how much work goes into making a map. The thought process behind each detalil, including all important information like roads, rivers, cities, towns, distrtics, highways etc and at the same time trying to make it easy to understand. Apart from the map itself, thinking about what the back should be and making each millimeter of space useful was a challenge. Keeping in mind the size, the amount of information I could put in and what should the map contain was a big question. I wanted this map

to be a all in one political, phyical, road & educational and I feel like I have achieved that to some extent.

This was by far the toughest and most rewarding project I have worked on
