DON’T MESS WITH SUCCESS!!!Based on the results from the 2007 clinic, that probably
should be the mantra for next year’s clinic. The Nebraska Coaches Association hosted one of the largest
clinics ever, with over 2,300 coaches and athletic
directors attending. That number does not take into
consideration the speakers, vendors, volunteers andothers that helps make this one of the top clinics in the
nation. It would be hard pressed to find a clinic as
comprehensive as what the NCA offers on an annualbasis. Along with typical sessions, the NCA expanded
it’s offerings to include three full days of Special
Olympics presentations. Those sessions in bocce, bowling, and swimming, increased the clinic attendance
by more than 125 coaches.
Aaron Davis’s keynote provided an enlightening
and energetic presentation, giving the 2007 a great kickstart. Thanks to all of those coaches who gave of their
time to help make this one of the best clinics ever. Now
the NCA office starts on the 2008 clinic with a fervor and excitement to improve on this year’s success.
The 2007 All-Star Games provided great
entertainment for all those attending as the Girl’s andBoy’s All-Star Basketball Teams tipped off on Monday
night of clinic week. The Red Team defeated the Blue
Squad by a score of 68-54 with Lincoln Northeast’s
Dominique Kelley dominating the scorebook with 24
points on 7-9 shooting from 2-pt. range and 3-4 beyond
the arc. The Blue Squad was led by Crofton’s AmberHegge, who scored 17 points. The boy’s game followed
and lit up the scoreboard scoring 232 points. Leading
the Blue Team to a victory were four players in double
figures with Papillion’s Mitch Albers scoring 18 points,Louisville’s Tyler Petersen’s 17 points, Lincoln
Northeast’s Wendell Faines with 16 points, and
Winside’s Marcus Messersmith with 11 points. The RedTeam had five players in double figures, led by Jake
Johnson of Grand Island CC, who scored 25 points.
Also scoring in double figures were Norfolk Catholic’sJustin Heng, Norfolk’s Brett Shively, Omaha Bryan’s
Dijon Smith, and Elkhorn’s Evan Lamprecht.
The Girl’s Volleyball Teams highlighted
Tuesday night’s action as the Blue team defeated the Red squad 3-2 by the scores of 17-30, 30-23, 30-21, 23-
30 and 15-8.
The 3rd Annual Softball Double Header wasshortened to the first inning of the second game due to
severe weather approaching Bowlin Field. In thecompleted first game, the Red Squad, coached by Norris Coach Greg Hardin and Millard South Coach Steve Kerkman, defeated the Blue Team 5-1.

DATES SET FOR 2008
MULTI-SPORTS CLINICAfter much thought and consideration, the Nebraska
Coaches Association Board of Directors, on the
recommendation of NCA Director Steve Johnsen, made the decision to change the 2008 Multi-Sports Clinic
dates to July 29-31. This decision was made for several
reasons. The first was the concern about being able todraw Division I and II coaches as clinicians, particularly
in the area of volleyball and football, as their season
would begin the first week of August. The secondaryreason was the potential loss of many of the Division I
and II athletes eligible to participate in the All-Star
Games. The fact that the NSAA calendar changes next
year has no bearing on what colleges do regarding their schedule.
The primary negative with the change was that
the NSAA permits camps and clinics to continue untilJuly 31. We hope that with this much advance notice,
coaches will make the adjustment to their summer
camp/clinic schedules. Again, the 2008 Nebraska
Coaches Association Multi-Sports Clinic will be held
at North Star HS on July 29-31.
OFFICE HOURSThe Nebraska Coaches Association offices are normallyopen between the hours of 7:30 a.m.- 3:30 p.m. Monday
thru Friday. Occasionally the office staff may be out of
the office attending games, hosting meetings, etc. If you
are coming to the office, it would benefit you to callahead. As an early reminder, the office will be closed on
Tuesday, November 20 for the Sportsmanship Summit,
and Thursday, November 22-25 for ThanksgivingVacation. Over the Christmas holidays, the office will
close on Friday, December 21 and reopen on
Wednesday, January 2. If you need assistance duringthose times, please feel free to call the office and
someone will get back to you.

GET YOUR REGISTRATIONS IN FOR
THE 2007 SPORTSMANSHIP SUMMITRegistration forms for the 2007 Sportsmanship Summit
have been mailed to every high school Athletic Director
and Principal in Nebraska. This year, the Summit willbe held on the campus of Nebraska Wesleyan University
on Tuesday, November 20. Adjustments have been
made to the previous year’s schedule as a keynote, withAaron Davis was added, as well as a student panel made
up of students attending the National Federation
Leadership Conference. The panel, whose main focusduring last summer’s conference was on sportsmanship
issues, will have a frank and open discussion on
sportsmanship issues in our schools. Some students
have indicated that the goal of the summit is to squelchschool spirit by placing restrictions on what they can and
can’t do, but this panel will offer a platform to exchange
ideas on how to positively influence studentparticipation.
The Sportsmanship Summit would be nothing
without the dynamic presentation by Harvey Alston.
Harvey has keynoted every Summit and annually ranksas the top presentation. Also returning this year after
one year off, is Bruce Brown. Bruce presents some
thoughtful and insightful presentations on TeamBuilding and his presentation on the “Role of Parents in
Athletics” continues to provide thought provoking
questions to parents, coaches and administrators alike. Two sessions will be provided by Universal
Cheerleaders Association for cheerleaders and cheer
coaches/sponsor. These two sessions are geared
primarily for cheerleaders and the NCA/NSIAAAencourages you to send some of your cheer squads.
Make sure you get your registrations in early for
the 2008 Sportsmanship Summit. If you have neverattended before, you are
missing out on a great
opportunity to hear some ofthe top speakers in the
nation as well as sharing
your ideas with
representatives fromthroughout the state. If you
have attended previously,
you need to sign up a newgroup of people as you need to keep sportsmanship as a
key factor of your athletic program. This will be the
sixth year the summit has been offered, and is co-
sponsored by the Nebraska State Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association and the Nebraska Coaches
Association. If you have not received a registration
form, they are available on the NCA’s website atncacoach.org.
~Cheer/Dance Continued from page 1
Open discussions were held andrecommendations were made to make this an
outstanding championship. It was decided that based on
anticipated enrollment numbers, competition would be
divided into four classes, A, B, C & D. The NCAoffice received several calls from coaches and sponsors
that were concerned about competing against schools
with significantly high enrollment figures. Schools willhave the option of moving up a class. It was also
determined that classifications would be based on NSAA
basketball enrollment figures and that C1 & C2 schoolswould fall into the Class C Division and D1 and D2 into
the Class D division.
Preliminarily, the
schedule will feature Class Band A during the morning
session and Classes D & C in
the afternoon. This was doneto accommodate those schools
involved in District Girls
Basketball Finals on Friday,February 22, as well as the
first round of Class A & B
boys District basketball on
Saturday, February 23. C1,C2, D1, and D2 Boys’
subdistricts are on Thursday,
February 21, so that shouldnot interfere with the
Dance/Cheer Championships.
The championships will be administered by the
UDA/UCA/NDA/NCA and the parent company Varsity. It is hopeful that score sheets and final schedules will be
available in the next few weeks. Registration packets
will be mailed to every school and information will alsobe available on the NCA’s web site at ncacoach.org. If
you have any questions, please feel free to contact the
NCA office at 402-434-5675.Let’s share our ideas

ROM THE DIRECTOR
By Steve Johnsen, NCA Executive Director
It’s interesting when I go back to read
the articles written in the previous
year(s) to see how much has changed, but yet how much has stayed the same.
According to last years October issue of
the nebraska coach, the NCA officewas looking forward to a move into the
new NSAA office building on or about
September 1, 2007. Well, it is the middle of Octoberand we are still at our old address. Now it appears the
move-in date is closer to March of 2008. That’s just fine
with us as we have a great landlord and he is letting us
stay without any penalty. We are looking forward to anexciting new chapter of the Nebraska Coaches
Association and will welcome coaches to stop by the
new digs once we take occupancy. When you are intown for the State Volleyball Tournament or the State
Football finals, drive down by Haymarket Park to see
where the new building will be located. It is just northof the Haymarket Park Baseball Field and Softball
diamond on the north side of the parking lot.
As indicated in the previous article regarding the
2007 Multi-Sports Clinic, it seems like I always spend a considerable amount of time thanking everyone for
making it a success. I would be remiss if I didn’t take
the time to thank Past President Les Hill of ThayerCentral for his able leadership this past year. Also,
thanks to the entire Board of Directors for making my
job much easier by coming in two days early to move
the office to North Star, hang signs, set up chairs, runmeetings, greet speakers, host All-Star Games, etc. Also
a special thanks to the spouses of present board members
for giving of their time to assist with registration duringthe clinic. We also couldn’t host the clinic without the
able support of our sport hosts. They are responsible for
meeting the speakers at the hospitality room, accompanying them to the session site, making sure they
have a bottle of water, the AV equipment they requested
and introducing them. We also ask that they make sure
the sessions begin and end on time. Thanks for all your help. I would also be remiss if I didn’t thank the office
staff of first year assistant Amanda Gates, eleven year
staff member Kim Markus, and thirty-nine year partnerVicky Johnsen. (2 years in the office)
Another group making our job so much easier is
the staff and employees of Lincoln North Star HS. CraigJacobsen, North Star AD makes sure everything is in
place for us well in advance of the clinic. The custodial
staff assists us in setting up the various rooms and the
front office support staff makes us feel so welcome. Wedo our best not to disrupt the staff too much, but can you
imagine how tiring the clinic week is for those people as
well?In spite of the success of the 2007 clinic, there
are always things that can be improved, mainly the
attendance at the District Meetings and Sports Meetings.
We keep stressing to our coaches that the success of every ensuing clinic hinges on the suggestions that come
from these meetings. If you have heard someone speak
that you would like the NCA to bring to the clinic, thisprovides you the best opportunity to make that
suggestion. We will try to hire anyone, but we need
names and contact numbers. Thanks to all of you for making the 2007 clinic
such a success. We will continue to strive to build on
this year’s success, and are already looking forward to
2008. Best of luck as the fall season winds down andthe winter season cranks up. Be the best coach and
example you can be for your athletes, don’t forget your
primary role as an educator first, but most of all, take time for yourself and your families.
UNL BASKETBALL TICKET POLICYThis will be the second year for the new UNL Men’s
Basketball ticket policy. If you wish to order tickets for
home men’s basketball games, youmust call the Men’s Basketball office
at 402-472-2265 or 800-809-1188 a
week prior to the home game. Theyare handling all the tickets for
Nebraska Men’s Games. You may
still contact the NCA office at 402-434-5688 to ordertickets for UNL Women’s Basketball games. Please call
the NCA office at 402-434-5688 three working days
prior to a home game and the office will confirm your
order.
STATE VOLLEYBALL
TOURNAMENT HOSPITALITY
ROOMSThe Nebraska Coaches Association will host a
hospitality room at the 2007 State High SchoolVolleyball Tournament games held at
Pershing Auditorium. The room is
located in the north hallway and willbe marked by signs indicating the
available room. We encourage you to
take advantage of the room, but ask your cooperation in
not taking items from the room. The room is available for coaches and school administrators but not for family
members. Children will not be permitted in the room at
any time. Thanks for your cooperation.

What are your goals? BHS is a small school and I have little secretarial help. I am responsible for all of the
paperwork in the athletic department. I need to save time and effort on the mechanics of managing my department so I can spend more time with my Athletes and Coaches.
Why? Being an Athletic Director should be athlete-oriented, not paperwork driven. I wanted to get out of my office and
onto the field helping my kids and their coaches reach their full potential.

“Do As I Say, Not As I Do!”
By Dr. Jim Tenopir, NSAA Executive Director
Don Coryell, a former Head Coach ofthe San Diego Chargers and former
assistant to John McKay, reportedly
took a copy of the opposition’s game
plan to John McKay that a player hadfound in the locker room. McKay
reportedly looked at it and crumbled it
up and threw it away—the ethical thing to do. McKaywas quoted as saying, “If any of us cannot go out and
win a game and win it honestly without cheating, then
you shouldn’t be coaching, because you are teachingyour kids something wrong.”
I’ve preached this theme before. A coach is
betraying his profession and teaching the wrong life
lessons when his or her actions cry out, “Do as I say, notas I do!”
Granted, most coaches would not verbalize that
statement. Most coaches would not utter those words, but all too frequently, we have coaches whose very
actions are contrary to the expectations those coaches
have for their student-athletes.I continue to be impressed with the efforts of
coaches and athletic administrators who strive to follow
NSAA and game-playing rules, even though there may
be temptations to deviate from that strict adherence tothe rules.
This past week, I received an eight-question
email from a fledgling athletic administrator aboutNSAA’s organized practice rule, acceptable options for
open gyms, and appropriate uses of money generated
through fund-raisers. The athletic administrator was
fielding questions from his coaching staff, cloaked in the explanation that other area coaches were skirting some
of very rules in the email query.
The insinuation was that a coach in aneighboring school is permitted to schedule a sport-
specific open gym outside of the season and provides
coaching instruction during that time, either directly or through instructions given to the captains. Both the
sport-specific open gym and the coaching or instruction
at the open gym represent violations of NSAA’s open
gym bylaws. Is it fair that some schools covertly hold what
amounts to illegal practices, while those schools that
explicitly follow the rules do not enjoy that sameopportunity? Obviously, no! Does it place at a
disadvantage those schools that strictly adhere to the
rules? Likely, yes. However, I always hearken back to the question:
“What life lessons are the student-athletes learning when
the coach intentionally violates rules intended for all
schools?”
“Do as I say, not as I do!”
Those of us who are intimately involved in high
school activities often espouse the positive benefits from
participation in athletics and activities: teamwork, fair play, discipline, focusing on goals, hard work, lessons
learned in winning and losing, and commitment. I’ve
even contended that students can often learn as much—or more—in the classroom we call athletics than they
can learn in an academic classroom. The skill
development, modeling, work ethic, and self-discipline contribute to the development of the athlete and the
person.
But just what lessons are being learned when
student-athletes observe coaches who knowingly andwantonly lead and coach outside the rules? What
lessons are we teaching student-athletes when we, as
coaches, circumvent rules and expectations in an effortto get an edge? What are the values of the lessons
learned in those activities programs that feel the need to
resort to operational procedures and practices that areclearly outside the rules?
“Do as I say, not as I do!”
“Never compromise your ethics or standards. If
you do, you may have a short-term reward, but will most
likely have a long-term disappointment.” Those wordshave been attributed to Mark Krikorian, Florida State
Head Women’s Soccer Coach. I concur!
In many schools across this state, there is
pressure—real or imagined—to win. There are coacheswho regrettably resort to practices that are outside the
rules. There are coaches who disregard the life lessons
that are taught in athletics, opting instead to strive for the “wins” at almost any cost. There are likely student-
athletes who, in watching and reading the actions of their
coach, will develop the philosophy that it is ethicallypermissible to circumvent rules. Those student-athletes
who do not accept the outside-the-rules, coach’s
behaviors will not see the coach in the positive and
respected light most coaches would prefer. In the process, those coaches who circumvent the rules are
paving the way for that long-term disappointment.
I would exhort ALL high school coaches acrossthis state to absolve themselves of the temptations to fall
into the “Do as I say, not as I do!” mentality. Eyes are
watching! Assure that the life lessons your student-athletes learn are the right and proper lessons.
Adherence to the rules is one of the most important
lessons that a coach can teach to his or her student-
athletes. Be a great leader of young people! Let your actions teach the proper life lessons!

and to the affirmative. Our proposal gave them a number of options, to include a passgate, an advance call-in, etc., buteach institution was slightly different in their acceptance. Below is a list of how each school would like to handle the
