Information for students starting MYP 6 in August 2015Language Acquisition

At ISGR we offer a variety of languages and study plans depending on the situation for each individual student.

In MYP 6 all students will study Swedish, regardless of their previous contact with the language. The students will take a placement test when they begin MYP 6 in August. Depending on the results, students will be put into Swedish A for mother tongue proficiency students, Phase 1/2 (beginner) or Phase 3/4 (intermediate). It will take the first 2 weeks of school in August to sort out who is in which class. In addition to English and Swedish the students will study one of the Language Acquisition languages offered by ISGR MYP. Each student will study either Spanish or French. The language that they choose will be the language that they learn for the whole of MYP. This means that a student cannot swap from Spanish to French or vice versa once the choice has been made.

The fact that students choose their Language Acquisition language before starting MYP 6 is so that they are able to study their language of choice for 5 full years. This will allow them to be best prepared for the Diploma Program. Students who are just learning English will be enrolled in EAL (English as Another Language) and will not be taking any second language. Once the student has developed his/her English skills to an intermediate level, he/she will join the Swedish class. Then, when students have a strong understanding and ability in English they will leave EAL all together and join French or Spanish. The MYP French and Spanish teachers will be traveling up to Guldheden in the next 2 weeks to run a joint language class for the PYP 5 students so that they get a chance to hear both languages. After that lesson the students will bring home a form to fill out for their final language choice. We will want your responses by April 17th.Kind Regards,
