HISD EARLY CHILDHOOD DEPARTMENT ∙ CURRICULUM, INSTRUCTION, & ASSESSMENT

Theme #2 Training

My Family and

Friends

Mi familia y mis

amigos

Let’s Dissect Theme 2

• Using the sorting chart and your Teacher’s

Guide, find the focus for weeks 1-4 of literacy

and math.

• Now let’s take the information that we’ve

learned from the sorting chart and transfer it.

into a graphic organizer to get a bigger picture

of what the theme is about.

What is a Frayer Model?

• Strategy that uses a graphic organizer for

vocabulary building.

• Requires that you (1) define the target

vocabulary or concept (2) apply this

information by generating examples and non-

examples.

• Promotes critical thinking and helps students to

identify and understand unfamiliar vocabulary.

Let’s define Theme #2

Reflect on our EOY Data

• The commonalities from the sorting chart were

– Vocabulary

– Geometry

Research shows that…

• Vocabulary development has an impact on

children’s reading comprehension and

academic success as they get older.

(Chall, Jacobs, & Baldwin 1990 – The reading crisis-Why poor Children

Fall Behind)

• Children who acquire a substantial vocabulary

are often able to think more deeply, express

themselves better, and learn new things more

quickly.

(Susan Canizares – Scholastic/Parent and Child Magazine)

Let’s focus on Vocabulary

• How can we use the Frayer Model to introduce

vocabulary in the classroom? Let’s define

“School Family”.

• II.D.1 Child uses a wide variety of words to label and describe people, places,

things, and actions.

• II.D.3 Child demonstrates understanding in a variety of ways or knowing the meaning of 3,000 to 4,000 words, many more than he or she uses.

• II.A.3 Child shows understanding of the new language being spoken by English-

speaking teachers and peers (ELL)

Let’s Practice

• As a table, choose one of the vocabulary

words. These are all words that you will be

using in Theme 2.

• Use the Frayer Model to define the word.

Anchor Charts and

Vocabulary• Make thinking visible by recording content

during the learning process.

• Contain only the most relevant or important

information.

• Reflect current learning.

• Neat, organized, and have simple icons and

graphics.

What does it look like in

Pre-K?

• Lots of pictorial representations

• Clear and to the point

• Remember to teach all these strategies in

whole group before you put them in a

workstation.

Let’s Take a Look at

Geometry (Shapes)• Shapes are the building blocks to

understanding math.

• Shapes teach children the process of observing

same and different.

• Weeks 2

• Exploring with 3D shapes

• Identifying common shapes

• Week 3

• Naming common shapes

• (Shapes) slides, flips and turns

Let’s Use the Frayer Model

to Define a 3D Shape• Choose a 3D shape

• Use the Frayer Model and the items in the

baggie to define the 3D shape.

• V.C.2 Child creates shapes.
