Nature of Work: What does a speech pathologist do? Definition: A speech language

pathologist is someone who diagnoses and treats language and speech disorders.

They often work in hospitals. They may also work in a school. They may also have a private practice

where they receive patients. They may sometimes just work as a

consultant.

Working Conditions HOSPITAL

In a hospital a speech pathologist may help people who have medical conditions Cause communication difficulties or impairment.

Working Conditions SCHOOL

In a school, a speech pathologist works on helpingchildren outside of normal classes. They provideinstruction to help the child overcome language difficulties and to correct speech and languagedefects.

In a private practice a speech pathologist may workWith children or adults who have communication Problems. He works with these clients on an individualBasis.

To be a speech pathologist and practice in North Carolina I must complete a master’s degree and pass a state test to acquire my license to practice.
