P E T E R L I N D L E I N

originally defined someone who is ever

moving around wanting to see every-

thing. Literally translated it means "so-

meone with white skin" or "white skin".

It is now commonly used in most Bantu

languages of East, Central and Southern

Africa, to describe all white people.

Wikipedia

A white man is a strange spectacle, like a

newcomer from another planet, at which

you can stare curiously without end.

Ryszard Kapuscinski Heban (Ebony),

1998

The photos in this booklet are no por-

traits in the classical sense, as the people

in most cases are not looking actually in-

to the lens. They show how the people,

and especially the children, observed the

'Muzungu', who was coming to their re-

mote village, and his camera. Thus, this

time the photographer was and is only

looking back through his camera.
