Musical instruments of

China

1. silk

These are instruments

that have strings made

of silk.

A. PLUCKED

a. ch’in

• Has 7 strings made of silk.

b. se

• Zither made of 25 strings with movable bridges.

c. pipa

• Pear-shaped fretted lute with 4 strings over raised bamboo frets.

d. Yue qin

• 4-stringed lute shaped like a moon.

e. guzheng

• Plucked half-tube zither with movable bridges and 21 strings.

B. BOWED

a. erhu

• 2-stringed fiddle with a bow.

b. gehu• A string

fiddle bowed instrument with a round tubular body.

c. tiqin

• A 2-stringed instrument used in Kungu, Chaozhou and Taiwanese music

C. STRUCK

a. yangqin• A hammered

zither where strings are struck with two small bamboo beaters.

• Its shape is trapezoid with 5 to 6 bridges.

2. bamboo

Mainly composed of aerophones or

blown instruments made

of bamboo.

a. hsiao

• End-blown flute made from a smooth bamboo.

b. ti

• A transverse flute.• Its tip is made from

an ivory.

c. Suona• Double reed

instrument that is commonly used as an accompaniment in Beijing opera.

d. dizi

• Transverse bamboo flute with buzzing membrane.

3. wood

These are percussion

instruments made from wood.

a. muyu

• Made from mulberry wood that is shaped like a fish.

b. paiban

• A clapper made from flat pieces of hardwood.

4. stone

This group of instrument

comprises the various forms of

stone chimes.

a. bianqing• A rack of

stone tablets that are hung by ropes from a wooden frame and struck using a mallet

5. metal

These are percussion

instruments made from metal or

bronze.

a. bianzhong

• Bronze bells that are hung in a wooden frame and struck with a mallet.

b. yun-lo• Another

metal percussion instrument with small gongs struck with a small beater.

6. clay

These are instruments made

of clay soil.

a. xun

• A Chinese vessel flute.

• An ocarina made of baked clay or ceramic.

b. fou

• A clay pot used as a percussion instrument.

7. gourd

These are instruments

created from hardwood.

a. sheng

• A 17-piped instrument used to accompany folk songs.

b. hulusi• A free

reed wind instrument with 3 bamboo pipes which pass through a gourd wind chest.

8. hide/pigskinThese are

Chinese percussion

instruments made from cowhead or

pigskin.

a. bangu• 25cm drum

made from a thick piece of wood.

• Its drumhead is made f pigskin or cowhead.

b. tangu• A barrel

drum.• It is

covered with 2 drumheads made from pigskin or cowhead.

c. Chaozhou dagu

• Large drum which is played with two sticks.
