As an outstanding symphony orchestra, the
CUSO showcases our community’s cultural
and economic strength. Over 95% of our
musicians live and work in Champaign-
Urbana, and together with our Board
members, music director, and guest
artists, they participate visibly in our
cultural life and share the gift of
music in retirement communities,
hospitals, University events,
social occasions, and more.
We imagine a community
in which the power and
beauty of the finest
symphonic music
reaches everyone.
DEAR FRIENDS,
Come take a musical journey with us and enjoy “Music of the Heartland”, the exciting season that awaits you in the splendor of the Foellinger Great Hall at the Krannert Center.
The brilliance of the Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra will shine in dazzling works including Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, Stravinsky’s Petrushka, and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5. Be amazed by the talents of soloists Debra Richtmeyer in John Williams’ Escapades for Alto Saxophone and Orchestra, Ran Dank in Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5, and Stefan Milenkovich in Sibelius’ Violin Concerto. A midseason delight will be our “Music of the Heartland” concert, featuring the Illinois premiere of From the Blue Ridge: Concerto for Mandolin and Orchestra, played by its composer Jeffrey Midkiff, and Dvorak’s ever-popular Symphony No. 9 (From the New World). Nothing compares to the thrill of hearing magnificent music performed by an outstanding orchestra. Secure your seats and support the artistic treasure that is the Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra! Musically yours,

Felix Mendelssohn: Hebrides Overture, Op. 26John Corigliano: Voyage for Flute and Strings Mary Leathers Chapman, fluteJohn Williams: Escapades for Alto Saxophone and Orchestra from the film score Catch Me If You Can Debra Richtmeyer, saxophoneNikolai Rimsky-Korsakov: Scheherazade, Op. 35
The season opens with a musical voyage, beginning with the dramatic portrayal of Scotland’s Hebrides Islands by the well-traveled Felix Mendelssohn. John Corigliano’s Voyage for Flute and Strings soars with lyric expression and lush harmo-
nies. Drawn from one of the finest film scores of recent times, John Williams’ clever suite from Catch Me If You Can deftly portrays international jet-setting and features a solo alto saxophone. Finally, Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade weaves a tale of Arabian princes and sailing ships into one of the most colorful orchestral works ever written.
HOLIDAY SPLENDORThursday, December 11, 2014 at 7:30pm
A holiday treat for the entire family, this program features a delightful array of music for the season! The CUSO will be joined by the Central Illinois Children’s Chorus and the singers of the Baroque Artists of Champaign-Urbana, and of course, jolly old St. Nick!
MUSICAL REVOLUTIONARIESSaturday, January 31, 2015 at 7:30pm
Igor Stravinsky: PetrushkaLudwig van Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat Major Ran Dank, piano
Stravinsky and Beethoven each charted new directions in music with their bold creations. Stravinsky’s Petrushka,
written for the famed Ballets Russes of Paris in 1911, calls forth an immense orchestra and pulsates with vivid details and evocative textures. With his Piano Concerto No. 5, often called the Emperor Concerto, Beethoven blazed new trails in the concerto form and offered some of his most heroic music in this epic work.
MUSIC OF THE HEARTLANDFriday, March 6, 2015 at 7:30pm
Aaron Copland: The Tender Land SuiteJeffrey Midkiff: Concerto for Mandolin and Orchestra (From the Blue Ridge) Jeffrey Midkiff, mandolinAntonín Dvorák: Symphony No. 9 in E Minor, Op. 95 (From the New World)
This concert celebrates music from the American heartland and salutes the dedicated farmers who tend the bountiful fields of our country. No composer seemed to capture the essence of Americana better than Aaron Copland. The Suite from his beautiful opera The Tender Land includes the well-known tunes “Zion’s Walls” and “The Promise of Living.” The next work features Jeff Midkiff, who is creating a sensation across the country with his Concerto for Mandolin and Orchestra, melding bluegrass and classical styles. The timeless, soaring melodies of the final piece, Dvorák’s New World Symphony, reflect the compos-er’s experiences in the United States and his time in the American Midwest.
THE TRIUMPH OF MUSICSaturday, April 25, 2015 at 7:30pm
Jean Sibelius: Violin Concerto in D Minor , Op. 47 Stefan Milenkovich, violinDmitri Shostakovich: Symphony No. 5 in D Minor, Op. 47
Few concertos offer the solo violinist more expressive and he-roic passages than Jean Sibelius’ Violin Concerto. In the gifted
hands of violinist Stefan Milenkovich, this virtuousic, lyrical, and darkly ener-getic work will electrify audiences in a thrilling performance. Dmitri Shosta-kovich poured inner turmoil and indomitable spirit into his Fifth Symphony. From intense pathos to bold fanfare, the poetry and power of this majestic work bring the CUSO season to a triumphant conclusion.
