Muna Abdillahi BA (Hons) Photography

I am a first year student from London who's deaf, oral and a

BSL user. I am studying BA (Hons) Photography. I chose the

University of Wolverhampton because it has a deaf

community, great courses and very good support. The

reason why I wanted to go to university is I wanted to learn

about photography in more detail and get a better job with

this degree.

My interest in photography started in Primary School. Our

class did a photography project, and we took pictures of the

environment, such as trees, flowers and fields. This was my

first experience of taking pictures and I really enjoyed it. It

taught me to see the details within surroundings.

I am enjoying my course because I am expanding my knowledge of artist photographers, the

use of film, cameras, the darkroom, digital cameras, the studio, specialist software such as

Photoshop and general photography.

When I first arrived at Wolverhampton, I felt like I was struggling, everything was new, but

after a while, I started to feel myself getting more confident. I found out that the university

knows about deaf awareness, which made me feel more comfortable here. I found it really

difficult to leave home, because my whole life is in London. When I moved to

Wolverhampton, I found it a struggle to be independent, but then day by day, as I learnt

more, my independence grew. What I’ve enjoyed most about this university is meeting new

people, also the many new things that I have learnt and really enjoyed.

I have made new deaf friends, and I have also made some new hearing friends, which I

really like because it's helping me prepare for working with hearing people in the future.

My dream is to open my own gallery to present all my photography work. My goal is to

achieve a 'first class' degree at the end of this course.
