STORY TIME

Remember:

Ancient Greece, which was close to Egypt, had myths too.

Echo and Narcissus

Echo loved to be the first person to know everything that happened to everybody. She was a gossip and busybody.

One time, Echo saw Zeus cheating on his wife, Hera, with a nymph.

As Hera was about to discover this, Echo distracted her with pointless talk. She

tried to keep Hera from learning the truth.

Hera discovered that Echo was more concerned

about getting involved in other people’s business instead of taking care of

her own. Therefore, Hera cursed Echo as a

punishment.

Hera’s curse was that Echo couldn’t say any of her own words, instead

she could only repeat the last words others spoke to

her.

“You were trying to trick the queen of the gods. This serves you right!” said Hera

“You right,” repeated Echo.

“Of course I’m right; I’m a goddess,” responded

Hera.

Echo was sad and distraught. She

wandered through the woods alone crying.

As she wandered, she saw the most beautiful man she had ever seen before. He was perfect

in every way.

Narcissus was resting by a pool of water,

staring at his reflection.

Narcissus was so impressed with his own

beauty.

He refused to pay any attention to Echo .

Narcissus remarked, “Please don’t tell me you’re one of those maidens who thinks they love me!”

“Love me,” answered Echo.

“No, I won’t love you. I haven’t found anyone worthy of my love,” Narcissus rudely corrected Echo.

Echo’s spirit was crushed and

her heart withered. She climbed into a cave and began to weep and weep.

Echo’s body withered in her

sadness, and all that was left

was her voice—an echo.

And Narcissus sat by a stream staring at his own reflection. He

suddenly feel in love with his own reflection

realizing he would never find anyone as perfect

as himself.

As he gazed at his own reflection, in love with himself, his body turned into

a golden flower—the narcissus.

The

End

Think about the story “Echo and Narcissus”

The English language uses both the characters’ names.

EchoNarcissistic

Think of the story and write a definition for each word.

EchoNarcissistic

Echo—repeating a sound, a sound that’s heard again

Narcissistic—too much self-love, fascination or obsession with one’s self

List out four traits for each character

Echo Narcissus

Now, let’s write a summary

explaining the story Echo and

Narcissus.

We’re going to use a special

formula to help us write our

summary:

SOMEBODY WANTED BUT SO

You put a name or event for

each word. Somebody=whoWanted=a goal or desireBut=problemSo=solution

Now, try to fill in each space

using the story about Hades

and Persephone.

Here is my summary:

Echo, who lost her ability to speak, fell in love with Narcissus, who only could love himself, so she died of a broken heart.
