Even if you have just a few moments right now to flip through this issue, we hope our GIVING edition will leave you feeling inspired and that you will gravi-tate back to read more.
We sought out stories about people and programs-making a difference in our community, across the country and all around the world.
You’ll find out how you and your family can take a volunteer vacation, meet a local teen entrepreneur whose attempt at saving for college turned into a must-read book for kids and learn about non-material gifts parents hope to give their children.
In continuing our MBC Green Pages, you’ll learn how to make your own eco-friendly cleaning products that are safe for the entire family to use. We will also give you tips on how to make your book swapping experience a green one!
As part of Modern Babies & Children’s commitment to giving, we partner with a number of non-profit organizations. We’ll take you inside four of them and share per-spectives from some of the volunteers and the people served.
Don’t forget to visit us at ModernBabiesAndChildren.com where you’ll find a NEW summer camp directory, and interactive version of this entire issue and much more.
We want to hear your feedback on what you like about our magazine and any suggestions you may have for future editions! The first five people to email us (DFW@ModernBabiesAndChildren.com) will receive a gift from one of our advertisers.
Happy Giving,

KIDPRENEUR: Local Teen Becomes One in His Quest
to $hare the $tories of Other
Child Entrepreneurs
“Life is too short – you don’t want to wake up one day and look back at your life and ask yourself, ‘Why didn’t I?’”
It’s hard to believe the person who penned this motivational message is just 16 years old (and just shy of 15 when he wrote it) until he needs to shift our phone interview time slightly to accommodate getting picked up from school.
In Kidpreneur: Genius Ways For Kids To Pay Their Way Through College,
Dallas Crilley, a DFW area teen, weaves in his own words of encouragement as he introduces young readers to an impressive line-up of kidpreneurs.
There is Farrah Gray, who began sell-ing items door-to-door as a little boy in inner-city Chicago. “He started when he was 6 years old with every disadvantage. He ended up being the youngest African-American self-made millionaire of all time,” shares Crilley, adding that at 14,

During the writing process, Crilley sought feedback from his dad, Jeff Crilley, a published author, founder of Real News PR and a former TV reporter.

by Rebecca Klein
Gray earned a million dollars after selling the food company he started based on his grandmother’s pancake recipe. At age 10, K-K Gregory found a way to stop snow from sneaking into kids’ coat sleeves. Crilley shares how her creation of special detachable sleeves called “Wris-ties” earned more than $22,000 in the first six minutes of sales on QVC.
Michael Dell displayed business savvy long before Dell Computers. Crilley writes that as a 12-year-old newspaper subscription salesperson, Dell found that newlyweds and recent homebuyers were his most likely customers and hired “a small army of adolescents” to go to the courthouse and look for leads from home deeds and marriage licenses. “By the end of the summer he was making more than the teachers he was about to be learning from,” writes Crilley.
Crilley hopes to use profits from his book sales to pay his way through college.
He is already $20,000 of the way there. He wrote his book in only one month’s time during the summer of 2007, just be-fore his 15th birthday. “I really wanted to finish my summer feeling like I had accom-plished something,” explains Crilley, who was living in Michigan at the time. Out of frustration that he was too young for a traditional job, he started seeking inspira-tion online and discovered many kidpre-neurs. “I realized these stories needed to be told. Most of these people are fairly unknown,” he says.
During the writing process, Crilley sought feedback from his dad, Jeff Cril-ley, a published author, founder of Real News PR and a former TV reporter. Brown Books, the same Dallas publishing com-pany with which his dad worked, brought his manuscript to life.
Crilley also credits his mom, an after-school teacher, for her support and points out how he has seen a common thread of parental support among many kidpre-neurs.
Just what can we expect from this kid-preneur? He has his eyes on the entre-preneurial sky and is also grounded in the now — working to maintain his 3.9 grade point average.

Music Sesamstraat… Takalani Sesame… Zhima Jie… rue Sésame… Plaza Sésamo … Galli Galli Sim Sim — These are just some of the ways children around the world know the show Sesame Street.*
For the first time, kids can grab their rubber duckies and set sail on a global adventure to glimpse the Sesame songs and videos that kids in other countries enjoy. Putumayo World Music’s children’s division and Sesame Workshop teamed up to produce the CD/DVD set, Sesame Street Playground: Songs and Videos from Around the World. The CD features songs in a dozen different languages, including such classics as “Sing” and “El-mo’s Song” in English. Young listeners will sometimes recognize the melodies, such
as the Chinese version of “Rubber Duckie” and will also enjoy new rhythms that are representative of the countries of origin.
The DVD features five music videos, including the show open from India, a video produced in Mexico about enjoy-ing fruit and a South African one about pollution.
“My favorite video is “Pollution Song” from South Africa’s Takalani Sesame, which encourages us to take care of our environment,” shares Sesame Workshop’s CEO, Gary Knell. “The songs aren’t about alarming children or forcing them to take action. It’s about making connec-tions and, in this instance, connecting kids with nature and nature with our kids; it’s about co-dependency.”
By Rebecca Klein
Summer 2009 ModernBabiesAndChildren.com 39
He explains, “Whether we’re singing about protecting the environment or eating delicious healthy fruits, we’re promoting global values that all kids can relate to.”
Putumayo World Music’s CEO and Founder Dan Storper describes the part-nership with Sesame as a natural one. “Putumayo Kids is really about finding a way to introduce kids to other cultures through music. There aren’t that many nat-ural connectors that are nearly as good as music.”
Sesame Street celebrates its 40th birthday in 2009 and airs in about 140 countries with about 30 of those coun-tries co-producing localized versions with Sesame Workshop. A portion of the pro-ceeds from Sesame Street Playground will support the show as well as Sesame Workshop’s other projects for children worldwide. v

Book swapping is an easy way to recycle and save money!
Waste Not Want Not:
By Michele Pearlstein
46 ModernBabiesAndChildren.com Summer 2009
Tired of dusting off those piles of books you’ve already read? Book swapping may be just the right solution for you. You can purge your book collection while earning points to get the books you want and, in some cases, CDs and DVDs too! Then you can turn them in for more. Being green has never been so reward-ing! We tried out two of the many sites available.
PaperBackSwap.com This user-friendly site makes book swap-ping as easy as can be. To join, just list at least 10 books you have read and are willing to swap. When other PaperBack-Swap members request your books, you will receive one point for each book you send off. You can take these points and request books of your own. PaperBackSwap even allows you to print off a wrapper to mail the books in, along with the option of purchasing postage right from the site. As long as your book weighs less than 13 ounces, you can mail it from home. Nothing could make it easier to keep those books circulating! PaperBackSwap also has two sister sites, one for trading CDs and one for DVDs.
BookMooch.com In addition to providing an easy forum for people to swap books, this website also allows you to use your points to donate to charity. Here’s how it works. After joining the BookMooch website, you provide a list of the books with which you are willing to part. When other members request your books, you can earn points to either select books for yourself or give the points to a general fund or one of the specific charities with which BookMooch partners. Looking for a book written in a differ-ent language? BookMooch might be able to help out. They allow you to trade with members in other countries. v

Stork Vision® a locally owned 3D/4D Prenatal Imaging Company will be ac-cepting tax deductible donations on behalf of Operation Special Delivery (OSD) at all four DFW locations (Fort Worth, Frisco, Keller and Mansfield) April 1 – June 30, 2009. Please visit the Stork Vision® website to locate the center nearest you to make your drop off StorkVision.com. For many military families, the call to duty has left expectant mothers behind to face delivery alone. With the recent sixth anniversary of the war in Iraq, Stork Vi-sion® is urging their local communities to step up to help fill the gap left by absent husbands and partners by making do-nations for “Operation Special Delivery (OSD). Operation Special Delivery (OSD) provides trained volunteer doulas at no cost to pregnant military women whose husband or partner has been severely in-jured or who have lost their lives due to the current war on terror, or who will be deployed at the time that they are due to give birth. A doula is someone who is specially trained to give informational, emotional, and physical support to wom-en during childbirth. Expectant military mothers who want more information can visit the OSD website to fill out an application form to get matched with a doula in their area. OperationSpecialDelivery.com

It started three years ago with a bake sale. Then 11-year-old Noah Sather raised $250 selling baked goods at his school so that he could make loans to complete strangers who live in other countries and needed funds to help start vari-ous businesses. Sather’s mom, Patti Schiendelman, and older brother matched the money raised so that he could lend $500 to the far-a-way entrepreneurs. There would be
no thank you or photo op. The recipi-ents will never know who came to the rescue.
This Seattle student made the loans through Kiva.org, a non-profit created to help entrepreneurs, mainly in third world countries, to launch food, clothing, livestock, auto-repair and other business ven-
tures. Especially in third world countries, it often only takes a few hundred dollars

for someone to start a business. When prospective lenders visit the website, they can easily access a list of entrepreneurs complete with names, lo-cations, photos and a description of the business. The minimum amount that can be loaned is $25. According to Kiva, nearly 99 per-cent of loans have been repaid since it launched in 2005. When your money is returned, you can either take the cash or help someone else. The average re-

payment term is one year. However, Fiona Ramsey, the organization’s public relations director, notes that loans can be as short as 3 months and as long as 18 months “to ensure that the loan has terms which maximize the borrower’s ability to repay.” Money is never exchanged directly be-tween the lender and entrepreneur. You can pay Kiva directly with your PayPal ac-
count or a credit card. Kiva takes care of the rest, making sure the entrepreneur receives the funds. Amazingly, Sather is still going strong and continues to lend money to perfect strangers. Each time, he selects three busi-nesses to support and then waits for repay-ment before starting the process again. All of his money has been returned. Schiendelman, a single mother, shares, “We don’t have a lot of money. It’s re-ally important to me that he understands that we have so much more than so many people in the world. You give what you can.” She explains that her son typically in-vests in women’s businesses. Schiendel-man is proud to have taught her son that it “feels really good to do things for other people [and] to know you can make a difference even if you are a kid.” She also points out that the experience with Kiva has been a great entrée into in-depth conversations about the economy, other countries and the world at large. v

Mention the word “gift” to your children, and you just may hear about a coveted high-tech toy or even a dream trip to Dis-ney World. Only, we’re not talk-ing about that kind of present. In the spirit of our GIVING issue, for this edition’s “Take 5,” we polled local parents about gifts that money can’t buy — the kind of gifts where it may take years to reveal if they have been received. We asked moms and dads to tell us about the one non-material gift that they hope to give to their children. “The ability to be self-reliant… They’re going to ultimately choose their own path religiously, socially, [and] economically, but I have to be able to give them the tools to get there.” - Joel Payne “We hope that both our children learn to love and accept themselves unconditionally, because we as their parents have shown them how to do that. Consequently, our wish is that they are also accepting of others, regardless of differences in beliefs, cultures and life choices.”- Lara & Roger Nicolson
“I hope we can give our daughter a sense of value in her health and continue to teach her the importance of a strong body and a strong mind.” - Jennifer Judy
“The non-material gift I would pass to my child would be a sense of determination and a drive for accom-plishment. I would like her to understand she’s responsible for her success and that she can achieve at whatever level she strives to achieve.” - Jesse Judy
“I would say the love for reading books… That will give my son a lifetime of knowledge.” - Maria Mendoza v
When our co-founder, Karen Buck, read our “Take 5” question, she men-tioned that she knew exactly how she would answer it. Unlike the majority of parents we polled, who have young chil-dren, Karen has watched her now adult daughter receive the one non-material gift she always wanted to give her — a sense of independence. We asked Karen to elaborate. My daughter, Jessica, is 27 and is more independent than I ever was at her age. She doesn’t think twice about finding an affordable flight on one of a variety of “cheap” travel sites, hopping a plane to Vietnam to visit with a friend who is trans-lating textbooks or meeting up with friends in Paris for a few days of museums and crepes while making tons of memories. This independence is something that I admire in my daughter. She works hard at her career, funds all of her traveling ex-penses and understands that some things have to be sacrificed in order to achieve what is important to you. There are many times when I would much rather have her with me enjoying a long walk on a wooded trail, playing Boggle or Scrabble, or simply having a meal together. However, I am proud that the most important lesson that I could have ever helped my daughter to learn is inde-pendence. Starting when Jess was a little girl, I remember telling her that it did not matter what she chose to do in life as long as she gave it her 110 percent. I would have encouraged any path of study or ca-reer that she chose as long as she gave it her all. I encouraged her to set goals and follow her dreams. We also discussed the importance of believing in herself and not depending on anyone else to “make things happen.” There is such freedom in that type of in-dependence, and one thing that I am cer-tain about is that I have given my daughter that fabulous feeling of freedom. - Karen Buck

A couple’s Caribbean cruise honeymoon is booked and paid for when the bride-to-be decides against setting sail. The year is 1979. Michele Gran has just seen news accounts of Vietnamese people losing their lives while trying to float to free-dom in rickety boats. As her now husband, Bud Philbrook, tells it, taking a cruise didn’t seem right. They compromised and took a non-traditional honeymoon — one week volunteering in a Guatemalan village and one at Disney World. Afterward, the Minnesota newlyweds’ friends and colleagues were intrigued by the volunteer trip. “Part of the conversation was, ‘I always wanted to do something like that,’” Philbrook recalls. Philbrook, an attorney with a master’s in international economic development, and Gran, a public relations professional, knew they were on to something. “We decided we would do one of these trips once a year for our friends, and it just grew and grew,” he describes.

In 1984, they launched Global Volunteers. The non-profit sends participants on volunteer vacations to such destinations as China, Ghana, Costa Rica and an American Indian Reservation.
This year, 2500 participants will volun-teer in 110 communities in 21 countries on 5 continents. The couple’s three adult sons, who grew up volunteering around the globe, now work with their parents. Global Volunteers allows children as young as 5 to participate at some sites. Age requirements differ by project and lo-cation. The youngest volunteers often sim-ply play with other children, but can soon graduate to doing more.

Planting trees and painting school bleachers were two highlights of Sonia Picard’s experience during the week she celebrated her 8th birthday on Montana’s Blackfeet Reservation, where Global Vol-unteers has sent volunteers for nearly 10 years. “It felt really good,” she says, look-ing back on the 2006 trip. In addition to diverse service projects, her Kensington, Maryland family of five also enjoyed communal dinners, participated in a powwow and explored Glacier National Park. “We worked really hard. We played hard,” describes Sonia’s mother, Suzanne Picard, a Peace Corps alum, whose fam-ily had taken several vacations out West and wanted to make this one about giving back. “It’s kind of like a landmark in my child-hood. Later, when I’m going through my
memories... it will be something I’ll always be happy to think about,” shares 13-year-old Greg Picard. He recently collected backpacks and school supplies for children on the Blackfeet Reservation for his Bar Mitzvah service project. “Everyone really found their niche,” says Matthew Picard, who wanted to instill in his children “some insight that even with a small amount of effort, you can make a difference.” He appreciates that his chil-dren, who at the time ranged from 8 to 14 could see results, such as the painted bleachers and describes the experience as “eye opening” for them.

“Their whole perspective of the world is enriched,” says Philbrook about the impact on young participants. “It doesn’t mean they won’t want to come back and play with the Nin-tendo or the Xbox or whatever they have, but it does put in perspective that kids elsewhere may not have electricity let alone an Xbox.” He credits Global Volunteers’ ongoing presence in communities for its results. “Not one of our teams of volunteers will build a school, but over a year a school gets built,” he says, sharing the same applies for teaching children conversational English over the years or building a health clinic. The tax-deductible participation fees for the one to three week volunteer vacations range from $995 for domestic service programs to $3195 for international ones, depending on the service program and location. The fees directly support ongoing work in the host com-munity and cover project materials, meals and lodging, ground transportation, emergency medical evacuation insurance and other related expenses. There are discounts for students, families and companions. Airfare to the site is separate. Global Volunteers has been profiled widely on TV and in print. Philbrook says that Global Volunteers was granted Special Consultative Status with the United Nations in 1999 and that the organization provides the UN counsel and supports its initiatives, “such as Millennium Development Goals to ensure the safety and development of children and end hunger and poverty worldwide.” Twenty-five years after starting the journey, Philbrook is continually touched by such stories as the grandmother who took her granddaughter to give her “a gift of values.” He explains, “You get to make a difference in someone else’s life in a way that is difficult to describe or quantify, but you know it happened because of the way the person says thank you…” v For more information: globalvolunteers.org Service program fees listed above are subject to change. We are just one small com-pany but our hope is to do our part to better the world through our commitment to the earth and children’s charities. Our clothing is produced using cer-tified organic cotton. Organic cotton is grown using methods and materials that have a low impact on the environment and are healthier for the workers. Organic productions sys-tems replenish and maintain soil fertility, reduce the use of toxic and persistent pesticides and fertilizers. Our clothing has an ultra softness and quality that only organic cotton can of-fer. We currently partner with Alex’s Lemonade Stand be-cause not only are they a phe-nomenal charity dedicated to fighting childhood cancer but they also teach children about giving back by encouraging them to hold their own lemon-ade stands. The charity was in-spired by Alex who raised over 1 million dollars for childhood cancer before she died at the age of 8.
Our sizes range from 0 to 24 months and our price range is $15 to $29.
