Mise-en-scène

• Mise-en-scène is a French word.• It means ‘Having put into scene’

• A term used to describe all the visual elements in a single frame/shot.

• Task 1: Write down all the visual elements you see in films.

Why is Mise-en-scène important?

• Distinguish a genre• You understand more about the

characters• Some directors use Mise-en-

scène to create their own style e.g Quentin Tarantino

Setting/Location

• What does the setting/location tell us about the genre of the film?

• Place where things are happening/events occur.

• The setting helps the audience place the characters in order to understand the characters more.

Props• Why are props used?• To distinguish the genre• To create Authenticity • Tell you more about the

characters• The motive of the story

Costume• Where they live?• What their attitude is?• What era it is?

• Aid the audience to understand/get to know more about the character

• Shows who is the antagonist and Protagonist

• In Science Fiction, Fantasy and Epic films costumes are prominent in distinguishing the genre

Performance, Movement and Actor

• Certain actors are connected to genres

• The visual movement and presentation can say more about the character then the dialogue– Body language– Expressions
