Data: STAAR Writing

Let’s Look Forward...

Based upon our data, what have we done to support teachers/ students?

•IFDs- for reading units

•Quick Checks for each Genre

•Professional Development

On ComprehensionWhat does it mean to understand? Too often, we think of comprehension as: Answering questionsRetellingTeaching Comprehension Strategies

Is this definition worthy of our students’ intellectual capacity? Are we teaching comprehension or are we testing comprehension? What does it mean to understand deeply? What are the indicators that we understand deeply? Rubric Discussion-

On One Pagers

•The grammar / editing of the 4th grade writing test weighs 60% of the STAAR test.

•We have an increased focus on this for K-5 in the word work matrix.

•We need to expect greater levels of accountability here!

Just In Time PD

•Spalding Spelling Sept. 16 & 19

•PP Meetings Sept. 17- 30

•Empowering Writers k/1Sept. 26

•Lexia TBD

•Writing Training – 4th TBD

Check It

•The Vocabulary by Genre Quick Check should have already been given.

•Once we have taught a skill/ group of skills (by genre) a quick check should be given.

ELAR Thoughts on Forethought

1. There is a reading & writing lesson for each day.

2. More specificity in Forethought.

3. IFDs are a work in progress.4. All ancillary items should be

linked to the lesson.5. The MISD ELAR wiki houses

many resources – videos (etc.)

ELAR IFDsInstructional Focus Documents

* We will have an IFD for each unit!

MISD ELARA Focus on Figure 19:

•In grades 3-5 we have frontloaded all of the figure 19 comprehension strategies in Q1.

•In K-2 we spiral these throughout the year.

•We have a rubric to support the highest development of these critical reading skills.
