From your Chapter R Directors Robin Pettit & Fred Rennpferd
Hello Chapter R Friends!
The trees are mostly bare and fall harvest is nearly done and we are beginning to ramp up for the holiday season. For Chap-ter R, this means calendar planning/chili dump in November and the Christmas par-ty in December. But before we get to those two events, we have another fun activity coming up on Sat-urday, November 5
th, the Chapter R Mys-
tery Supper. Your Chapter R Team is host-ing this event for their chapter’s participants. For those of you who have nev-er been to one of these, here is how it works: you’ll order from a menu with-out knowing what these menu items are. The fun part is when you get your courses and finding out what you actually ordered. There will be four different “courses” served. Don’t worry; we will only serve you small portions to begin with. You’ll have an opportunity to eat more after the mystery portion is done. The event begins at 5:00 pm and the address is 300 1
st Ave NE, Aus-
tin, MN in the Chauncy Apartment building community room. The best part of this event – no cost to you! - Continued on Page 2

GWRRA Anniversaries
- Continued from page 1 The Chapter’s Christmas party is Sunday, December 4
th at The Events in Kasson, MN. Social hour begins
at 11:00 a.m. and we will eat at Noon. You’ll find the flyer located later in this newsletter after the for sale items. The money is due by November 19
th and the cost is $25 per person. We’ll be doing the mini Christ-
mas tree table decorations again this year. If you’d like to participate, purchase a mini Christmas tree ap-proximately 12-18 inches tall and decorate it to your liking. They will be used as raffles as well. There are a couple of pictures below as examples. Use your imagination! The remaining events on this year’s calendar are supper rides. They are as follows:
November 11 – Olivia’s in Owatonna. Meet there at 6:00 pm December 01 – George’s of Geneva. Meet there at 6:00 pm December 16 – Bear’s Den in Byron. Meet there at 6:00 pm

From your Chapter R Educator Dean Plank It’s hard to believe but in a few short weeks
we could have snow on the ground. So I
thought I would discuss prepping our bike
for winter storage. Most of us have to do
this unless you are lucky enough to be a
snow bird and go south for the winter. Then
you are lucky to ride year round. I went
online and did a search and I came up the nine things that I actually do
before I store my bike for the winter.
Prep the Surface
In other word wash and maybe even wax your bike. Yea I know washing
your bike when nobody is going to see it can be a drag. However giving your bike a good bath before stor-
age is important. For example, the last time I was out riding it was close to dusk before I got home and
WOW did I hit the bugs. Leaving those on your paint can corrode the finish permanently. So wash and dry
your bike completely getting all the moisture off any surfaces plus those nooks and crannies. You can do
this two ways. Use a leave blower or you can do as I do, use a hair dryer. After you do that, you can add
a coat of wax, which will act as a barrier against moisture and rust. Finally, spray exposed metal surface
with WD-40 to displace all moisture.
Change the Oil
Change your oil and filter. It's better for your lubrication system to have fresh oil sitting in it for several
months than to have used, broken down oil in it, not to mention the last thing you'll want to do when riding
season begins is change the oil before you can go ride. Using a winter weight oil like 5W30 can help it start
up easier come spring time as well.
Lube Moving Parts
Keeping moving parts lubed during the winter will help keep moisture from building up on them and caus-ing any rusting or binding. Any part of your motorcycle that needs to be lubed at any point should be lubed again before storage. Some parts to check are: chain drive, cables, controls, fork surfaces, and any other pivot points.
Prep the Fuel System
Gas tanks have a tendency to rust when not in use, and untreated gas breaks down and becomes gummy over time. To prevent rusting and to make sure your fuel is ready to run after a few months in storage, I do the following: I go to the gas station at the end of the last ride of the season and I put the required amount of gas stabilizer in and top off my tank. A full tank will keep the moisture from building up on the tank walls and the by adding the stabilizer, the short ride home will mix the gas and stabilizer together.

Protect Your Battery
Batteries tend to self-discharge when sitting over time, especially when they remain hooked up in the bike.
The easiest way to combat this is to hook up a battery tender. This monitors the charge of the battery and
keeps the battery charged without over charging. There are a couple of other things you can do too. One
is to pull the battery and store it inside your house or I have even done this: leave the battery in the bike,
but every two weeks start the bike and let it get up to operating temperature. I don’t know if that worked
because the next year I did have to get a new battery, however I think the battery was three plus years old.
Protect Your Tires
If your tires are left to sit in the same position all winter long, they could develop flat spots. Keeping the tires
off of the ground will prevent this. I put my bike on the center stand so the tires don’t rest completely on the
ground. I store my bike in my garage on concrete, so I put a piece of carpet or plywood under them to
keep any moisture from seeping into them. Another thing you can do is move your bike back and forth or
rotate your tires.
Check the Coolant/Anti-Freeze
If you'll be storing your bike somewhere that gets below freezing, make sure you have adequate levels of
anti-freeze in your coolant system. This is very important; if you run straight water in your coolant system
and it freezes, you could come back to a cracked head in the spring. This is a rather expensive repair and
will delay your riding season
Plug Out Pests
Mice and other rodents are notorious for hiding from the cold inside exhaust pipes and making homes out
of air filters. In order to avoid any furry surprises when it's time to ride again, plug up your pipes with an ex-
haust plug. Or you can simply do as I do place plastic bags in my exhaust pipes. But remember to take
them out in the spring.
Keep it Covered
With your motorcycle fully prepped for winter, invest in a proper motorcycle cover. A quality motorcycle cov-
er will not only keep dust off the bike, but will keep the moisture out so it doesn't get trapped underneath it,
and create corrosion or rust. If you're storing it outside, be sure to get a cover with tie downs to prevent it
from blowing loose in wind. If you're storing it inside you're in much better shape, but you should still use a
cover to prevent dust from building up on it.
As always, ride safe!
