They just don’t matter that much at improving student performance.

Why do students succeed while others struggle?

• Most often it is not because the work is too hard or they didn’t understand it

• it is more likely it is because they are missing some type of Intangible characteristic such a non-cognitive factor which doesn't allow them to succeed such as;

• Perseverance• Social skills• Communication skills• Initiative• Curiosity• Grit . we’ll come back to this one soon!• Work ethic• Motivation• Character

What does this have to do with PLTs

• PLTs are an investigative and exploratory opportunity to see how Dweck’s work on ‘mindsets’ may apply to ‘effective feedback’ which is one of the focus areas in 2015

At the start of the school year I typically

• Explain my expectations.• Establish rules.• Know everyone’s names.• Arrange seats to minimalise disruption.• Organise books and title pages• Talk about homework.• Tell them what they’ll be learning.• Make sure they listen.• Get students working right away.• Show a firm hand.

Now I think teachers should

• Ask about their expectations.• Know everyone’s story. - Rapport• Arrange seats to encourage collaboration.• Demonstrate that you value thinking.• Have high expectations - Rigour• Talk about learning. - Mindsets• Ensure they know that they ‘own’ their learning. Relevance• Make sure you listen.• Demonstrate you’re a lifelong learners and part of the learning

community.• Collect data• Praise the process not the end result.
