Mikhail Zakin’s Journey in ClayA Retrospective Show and Sale

May 4 - June 4, 2013Mikhail Zakin Gallery, Demarest, NJ

Introduction:

The Art School at Old Church is thrilled to be exhibiting the work of the visionary artist and mentor Mikhail Zakin. Exhibited at the nonprofit organization she cofounded almost 40 years ago are over 250 works from different times and places in her artistic career. Although Mikhail envisioned herself as a mentor before being an artist, she was prolific in the creation and execution of a large body of work throughout her life.

Very traditional in execution and technique, Mikhail’s work is also radical in its scope and breadth. Many of the works are so complete in both their formal and conceptual qualities they seem to have been created effortlessly. The thunderous rage of a waterfall, the subtle folds of implied fabric and the seeds of future alien life forms are just a few of the references that shine through Zakin’s work.

Mostly found in smaller intimate works, these ideas embodied in her work are also direct translations of her own philosophy on life and creativity. Her work brings forth the prehistoric, the modern, and future times to come, sometimes all in one sculpture. Seemingly created with such ease, many pieces are very much like Mikhail’s own personality, bold and fully articulated, yet tempered with a subtlety and nuance that only a true master could embody.

A warm thanks to all of Mikhail’s students and members of the Art School community for being part of the journey Mikhail initiated. Through her vision and dedication to art and creativity Mikhail’s journey will continue in all the lives she has touched so profoundly.

“...there are still worlds to discover, still lessons to be learned from people and from clay. I have been sustained by the love of dear teachers and friends, who opened doors and showed me the way, by students (who were also my teachers), who allowed me to share what I knew and who nourished me as they grew. I have felt priviledged to play some small part in this great yearning for mean-ing in life through art and craft making.”
