Introduction:

In the beginning the universe was empty,

desolate, hallow and dark. There was no life

forms EXCEPT a self-existent FORCE, a MOVERwho is unmoved, a CAUSE, uncaused. This

UNIVERSAL REALITY is otherwise called GOD.

God was the Word. Through Gods wordsHE REVEALED AND SHARED His life in creation. He manifested Himself to our first parents(Adam and Eve) and invited them to a personalintimate communion with Himself in paradise.

However, such intimacy ended. Sin shatteredthe unity of the human race. Because of Hisinfinite love, God sought to save humanity partby part. At this juncture, He appeared to and

made covenant with NOAH (Gen. 9), to gathertogether the scattered humanity

God called ABRAM and made him ABRAHAM

(to be father of a multitude of nations) in

whom all nations of the earth shall be blessed

(Gen. 12). Moved by His infinite mercy, God

through MOSES formed Israel into a community

by freeing them from the bondage of slavery inEgypt. He established them as a priestly

people. He wished them to be a holy nation

forming them in the hope of salvation and the

expectation of a new everlasting covenant

intended for all.

Intro.

The term creation is derived from the Latininfinitive verb creare which means to beget, andlikewise, from the Greek word Krinein whichmeans to found or to make habitable.

All this nominal definitions had their roots in the

Hebrew term bara which is reserved for the mightyand wondrous acts of God. It indicates a work whichis distinctively divine, which no agent loss than Godcan accomplish; it is independent of any pre-existentmaterial and realized without effort on the part of

him who wills it. (Komanchak, 1991;Mckenzie 1998)

CREATIONS STORIES:

 Gen. 1:1 - 2:4

 Gen. 2:5-25

Stories of other religions Chief among them is

the Enuma Elish by the Babylonians

8/4/2019 Midterm Notes 1

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/midterm-notes-1 22/74

For the Babylonians, the world begins from

the gods of fresh and salt water named APSU

and TIAMAT. The union of these two gods

produced other gods and goddesses. These

gods and goddesses were belligerent, causing

too much noise and trouble that disappointedApsu and Tiamat. Apsu and Taimat hatched a

plan to kill their puganacious offsprings. The

gods and goddesses telegraphed their parents

plot to exterminat them. To lead them against

Tiamat and Apsu, they chose a young warrior

god named Marduk.

8/4/2019 Midterm Notes 1

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/midterm-notes-1 23/74

Marduk slayed Tiamat, and out of the half of her

body he fashioned the earth, and our of the

other half the heavens.

Human beings, on the other hand, were

fashioned from the blood of one of the fallen

gods and were destined to serve the gods.Marduk also set roles to the other gods, gave

order to the world, and finally celebrates his

work by throwing a big banquet for gods andhumans.

B. Christian Message

The Doctrine of Creation:In the beginning when God created

the heavens and the earth; the earth was

INPUT

Theological Truths in its Creation Story:

God alone created the universe freely, directly without any help. He created the

world to show forth and communicate his

glory. That his creatures should share in his

truth, goodness and beauty that is the

glory which God created them. though

the work of creation is attributed to the

Father in particular it is equally a truth of faith that the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit

together are the one principal of Creation.

8/4/2019 Midterm Notes 1

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/midterm-notes-1 43/74

I. The Creator

A. God is the only uncreated reality. God is the

primary Cause. He is both transcendent and

Immanent.

B. The Triune God is the Creator. All threePersons act together as One God in creating,

redeeming and sanctifying. God the Father

creates through his Son, Jesus Christ, in theHoly Spirit.

8/4/2019 Midterm Notes 1

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/midterm-notes-1 44/74

II. The Creation

A. Creation is the foundation of Gods

saving plan and beginning of Salvation history, which culminates in Christ. The revelation of

Gods creating everything is inseparable from

the revelation and realization of his covenantwith his people.

1. the HOW of Creation: God freely,

directly and without any help, creates out of

nothing the universe and sustains it in existence

by His word, the Son and by the Creator Holy

Spirit

8/4/2019 Midterm Notes 1

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/midterm-notes-1 45/74

2. The WHY of creation: Not for increasing his

own beatitude, nor for attaining his perfection,

but to manifest this perfection through the

benefits He bestows on Creatures

2.1 God freely creates out of sheer love,

to share his own divine life andgoodness. Creation is the first step in

Gods plan of salvation fro all

through Jesus Christ.2.2. God has no other reason for creating

than his love and goodness

8/4/2019 Midterm Notes 1

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/midterm-notes-1 46/74

2.3. God created all things not to increase his

glory, but to show it forth to communicateit.

2.4. The Ultimate purpose of creation is that

God who is the creator of all things may atlast become all in all. Thus simultaneously

assuring his own glory and our beatitude.

DEEPENING

I. Some Notes on Created Realities

A. Christian faith proclaims: ( Summary of

the Christian Vision)

1. as product of divine wisdom, creation is

intelligible and meaningful, therefore,

2. evil is not essential or necessary

dimension of our existence; and thus,

8/4/2019 Midterm Notes 1

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/midterm-notes-1 48/74

3. Creation is open to Gods saving activity, and

4. Our present lives have an inner divine purpose,

which we can discern in faith.

B. Two Consequence:

1. Since everything depends on God, there

is no power in creation that can rival God.

Therefore, Christian are liberated from

anxious dread o any power or force in theworld, visible or any magical snare.

8/4/2019 Midterm Notes 1

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/midterm-notes-1 49/74

2. Man as Crown and Key of Creation

C. Visible and Invisible: the Angels1. The Nicene Creed H eaven and Earth

all things visible and invisible

2. Earth: not only our planet, but all reality visible to us.

3. Heaven: invisible spiritual world of God,

i.e. angels who are pure spirits centeredon Christ; ministering spirits sent to

serve those who are to inherit salvation.

8/4/2019 Midterm Notes 1

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/midterm-notes-1 50/74

D. Faith/Religion and Science

1. There is no contradiction between Science andReligion. Science attempts to explain how the

world evolved while Religion proclaims why there

is a world.

2. In affirming that God is the ultimate cause of

all that exist. Genesis gives its ultimate meaning

and purpose: WHY the world exist. It does not

treat the HOW of the physical world came to bein its present condition, which is what the theory

of evolution tries to explain.

8/4/2019 Midterm Notes 1

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/midterm-notes-1 51/74

SYNTHESIS

1. There is only one God, alone from the start,

who created the world.  Genesis firmly

believes in one powerful God who createdeverything.

8/4/2019 Midterm Notes 1

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/midterm-notes-1 52/74

2. When God created everything, H e did not

create them out of anything. We call this

doctrine as creatio ex nihilo that is, that Godcreated everything out of nothing.

Look at the heaven and the earth and see

everything that is in them, and recognize that

God did not make them out of things that

existed ( 2 Macc 7:28)

8/4/2019 Midterm Notes 1

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/midterm-notes-1 53/74

3. God created the world by wisdom and love.

Reasons Why God Created the world

not because:

o God is incomplete

o God is alone and sad

o By great accident (Aksidente, Di sinasadya, Tsamba) but because:

Gods free will

God wants to share his INFINITE LOVE

To make known the mystery of his will and reach outhuman beings.

8/4/2019 Midterm Notes 1

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/midterm-notes-1 54/74

4. God Creates an ordered and good world

Since the world is a product of Gods free will, wisdom and love, it necessarily follows that the

is nothing less than ODERED and GOOD.

(Gen.1:4) and god saw that it was goodvery

good.

Wisdom 11:20 You arranged all things by

measure and number and weight. Anything

that is willed, planned with wisdom and love isbound to be unique, polished and a work of

art.

8/4/2019 Midterm Notes 1

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/midterm-notes-1 55/74

5. God upholds and sustains creation. The

goodness of creator did not end when his

finished creation. His kindness is continuous

every moment he upholds and sustains his

creation in being, enables them to act and

brings them to their final end.God continually give us his Divine

Providence

He gave us:o Daily needs mother earth (food, shetler, clothes

etc.

8/4/2019 Midterm Notes 1

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/midterm-notes-1 56/74

o Companion (family, friends etc)

o Jesus Christ His Son savior/example ormodel

o Holy Spirit Counselor/guide)

A. Ecological Stewardship

1. The ecology crisis today highlights

further our moral obligations, flowing from our

God-given stewardship over the earth, not only

to use its goods responsibly, but to treat themwith real respect as gifts from our creator.

2. we are called to exercise responsible

stewardship is exercised in our daily activitieswhich we can consider as a prolongation of

The Human Being

Sacred Scripture teaches that human

person was created to the Image of God, body

and soul, as able to know and love his creator,

and as set by him over all earthly creatures that

he might rule them and use make of them, whileglorifying God.

From the beginning, male and female he

created them (Gen. 1:27). This partnership of man and women constitutes the first form of

communion between person 9Gen.2). For by his

Innermost nature, man is a social being; and if

he does not enter into relation with others, hecan neither live nor develop his gifts (GS 12) (cf.

CCC 355-373).

which he is related to the nature of God

B. He is the only creature that God haswilled for its own sake; he alone is call to share,

by knowledge and love, in Gods own life

C. To be creature is not only to be somebody, it

is be somebody of consequence in the context

of Gods great enterprise which is creation.

D. Being the image of God is doing what is

God doing.

E. Called for a humble recognition of our

creature hood, limitations

II. Body and Soul

A. Soul refer to human life or entire humanperson. It is also refers to the innermost aspect

of man. Soul dignifies the Spiritual principle in

man (CCC 363)

B. The Human body shares in the dignity of

image of God; it is a human body precisely

because is is animated by spiritual soul, and it is

the whole human person that is intended to
