Meet the MAPGA Staff
Jon Guhl, Executive Director Jon Guhl, Executive Director Jon Guhl, Executive Director Jon Guhl, Executive Director – I have been with the Section for 19 years, the last three as
Executive Director. My primary role is to coordinate the efforts of the
staff to execute the business plan of the Section. I work closely with the
Board of Directors and the Officers to set that plan and represent the
Section to the National Association. Secondarily, I continue to support
members and apprentices in the area of Employment/Club Relations. I
enjoy helping our members pursue and secure jobs, or improve their
existing ones. I graduated from William & Mary in 1993 and earned my
Masters in Sports Administration from UMass in 1994. After a few years in college athletics
(UMass, Univ. of Louisville), I started with the MAPGA in April of 1995. Fun Facts: I have a
twin brother, Mike (Atlanta); am a huge Patriots/Red Sox/Bruins/Celtics fan, and love
spending time with my wife and our two kids; Justin (11) and Jocelyn (8).
Stacey Smith, Director of Operations Stacey Smith, Director of Operations Stacey Smith, Director of Operations Stacey Smith, Director of Operations - As Director of Operations, my main focus is on
sponsorships and finance. I am the point person and clearinghouse for
any sponsor-related activities. I am also responsible for overseeing all
Section finances, with some assistance from our accounting team at the
National office. Additionally, I handle our Section Awards and Hall of
Fame selection process by working with the respective committees each
year and I oversee putting together the annual Hall of Fame/Awards
banquet. I also coordinate the Pro-President and Holden Cup events.
Finally, I am the staff contact for the Assistant Professional Association
(APA). Originally from Michigan, I've worked for the Section office for 13.5 years in a variety
of roles, several of which have earned me the nickname of "grammar police." I graduated
from Methodist University, where my playing career peaked with three NCAA Div-III
championships (two team and one individual). Fun Facts: I'm an avid traveler, history nerd,
and am fluent in sarcasm.
Jeremy Greiner, PGA, Tournament Director Jeremy Greiner, PGA, Tournament Director Jeremy Greiner, PGA, Tournament Director Jeremy Greiner, PGA, Tournament Director - I am starting my 12th year as a Section staff
member. Along with our intern, I run and/or coordinate about 12-15
Section tournaments and another 12-15 Chapter tournaments
throughout the year. In addition, I assist my counterparts at the VSGA
with administration of both the State Open of Virginia and the Senior
Open of Virginia. I also track and help facilities run their own Pro-Ams
and, with the Membership Committee, set up and administer the PATs
(Playing Ability Tests) in the Section. I work very closely with the
Tournament Chair and Tournament Committee to make any changes
to the tournaments, mostly through the Tournament Regulations and Policies. We try to
make sure everything you need to know about the tournaments we run is on MAPGA.com,
but please contact me if you have a question about them, a tournament you are involved
with, or have a Rules question. Fun fact: I did take a year’s worth of ballroom and tap
dancing lessons. I also took drum lessons and played the trumpet for 12 years. I wanted to
be a professional trumpet player, but would have made money only if I was paid NOT to play.
Hope to see you out on the links! (Cont. to page 2…)

I was so honored and proud to accept an award on behalf
of the Section members and
B o a r d a t t h e P G A
Merchandise Show. We were
selected by PGA Junior
League Golf as their (co)
Section of the Year! Based
on your excellent participation
and desire to grow the game,
we grew from 4 teams in
2012 to 61 (most in the
country) in 2013. Early word
is that we will exceed 100
Section teams in 2014. If
you have not already, please
register your facility for this
great feeder program at
www.pgajrleaguegolf.com.
We will also be leading the
way again with Drive, Chip &
Putt. You will recall that this
was a pilot program last year,
with the MAPGA being one of
the pilot Sections. Please
watch GolfChannel on the
first Sunday in April, as 88
kids (11 in each age group)
will compete at Augusta
National for their respective
DC&P titles. I think this first
national final, with the
accompanying TV coverage,
will really inspire children
across the country to be the
next to make it to Augusta.
While we have 11 qualifiers in
our Section for this now
nationwide program (CLICK
HERE for 2014 schedule),
please be prepared to instruct
these beginning/new golfers to
not only compete in this event,
but also convert them (and
their parents) to become
regular golfers!
On the tournament front, we
are excited to offer two new Pro
-Scratch events with $7500
added to each from National
Car Rental. Both should prove
to be outstanding tournaments,
so please plan to bring a
talented amateur to one or
both of these events (June 9 at
the Homestead, Sept 29 at
Dominion Valley). The future
sponsorship of these events
will depend on how many
participants (and MAPGA
members) sign up for a FREE
Emerald Club membership.
Please click on the National Car
Rental logo below to sign up
now- it will certainly help our
cause!

- We had quite the class of
Award Winners this year as
well. Led by Professional of
the Year Josh Tremblay, this
year’s awards class is clearly
getting the job done at their
facilities, in the Section, and in
their communities. Congrats
to all of the award winners!

Eric Southard, Tournament Intern Eric Southard, Tournament Intern Eric Southard, Tournament Intern Eric Southard, Tournament Intern - I have been with the Section for eight weeks and as the Tournament
Intern, my four main responsibilities are helping with Tournaments, Pro-Ams, Playing Ability Tests, and the
Tournament Weekly emails. With the Chapter and Section tournaments, I help Jeremy Greiner with the
paper work that is needed before and after the events, as well as assist in anything needed during the
event. For he Pro-Ams and PATs, I am in charge of registering the events and doing whatever is needed
before and after each outing. Lastly, I put together the upcoming events, tournament results, and other
official tournament sections in the Tournament Weekly email that goes out every Thursday to our
professionals. Fun facts: I went to Super Bowl XLVII in New Orleans where the Ravens beat the 49ers; I weighed 10lb 4oz

Eyes on Employment: Opportunities for PGA Professionals
PPPPerhaps we are in the state of the new normal or as many have referred, an economic reset. While everyone has reacted and made adjustments over the last few seasons, are those adjustments really working for your entire operation? As the economic indicators have stabilized somewhat, a business review is of paramount importance. The recent articles in PGA Magazine provided great insights on sales through every avenue of the club industry and golf operations. Instead of surviving, it is time to thrive in
2014!
A business review and plan will provide the basis or foundation to implement the ideas, action items, projects, education, and training to achieve those plans for the year. We all want PGA Professionals and their surrounding teammates to be regarded as the best trained and best positioned to positively impact the financial outcomes; providing great customer service and most important, an enriching lifestyle desired by the
members / customers.
An essential part of the business review is a SWOT analysis. We have all probably been exposed to business planning where we do a SWOT ana l y s i s . I n ve s t i g a t i n g St rengths , Weaknesses , Opportunities and Threats help us understand the current situation and determine the
next steps to thrive.
Interestingly, anytime a threat exists, there is also an opportunity. Consider this, when the housing market was red hot: how important was it to have the best realtor? Couldn’t many sellers have gotten by with a “for sale by owner sign?” In today’s market, people who are trying to sell their home want to give themselves every chance of success so they seek out the highest performing
realtor possible.
The analogy holds true in our industry as well. When membership is full or the corporate outings are booked months ahead, it was a matter of taking care of the operation and providing great customer service. The PGA Professional who embraces the SWOT analysis and challenges their operation to be part of the solution has an opportunity to put his or her training and experience to work to the benefit of the facility and their
career.
Most employers are seeking the best combination of people, game, and business skills in their PGA Professional. The good news is that many PGA Professionals possess these skills. The better news is that PGA Professionals who want to upgrade any of these areas can improve their skills through t r a i n i n g , p r o f e s s i o n a l development, and mentoring from fellow PGA Professionals. The best news is that once you clearly understand the skills required to implement the plan,
your value increases
greatly.
All of that validates the PGA of America’s
d e s c r i p t i o n o f P G A Professionals as “The experts in the game and business of golf.” One could look at the current environment as an o p p o r t u n i t y f o r P G A Professionals to utilize their expertise, show their value,
and lead.
As you go forward this season, I wish you much success and if I can be of assistance in any way, please do not hesitate to
call.

Bob Heintz, Junior Golf Director Bob Heintz, Junior Golf Director Bob Heintz, Junior Golf Director Bob Heintz, Junior Golf Director - I have been with the Section for a
little over seven years and the Junior Golf Director for six years. Prior to
the being the Junior Golf Director, I was a Junior Golf Intern and
Assistant Tournament Director. I oversee all Junior events for the
Section including the MAPGA Junior Tour Presented by HITT Contracting
and Lindsay Automotive Group. The tour consists of 31 events that run
from June 16th to August 13th. Along with the tour we run four two-day
tournaments (MAPGA Spring Fling, MAPGA Junior Championship, and two fall events). In 2009,
I started an event called the MAPGA Capital Cup; a ryder cup-style format where the top juniors
from the State of Maryland compete against the top juniors from the State of Virginia. I also run
the MAPGA Capitol Shootout and collaborated with VSGA to start the Junior Four-ball
Championship. Along with my duties as Junior Golf Director, Stephanie Jennings, PGA (Director
of Communications) and I oversee all Player Development programs for the Section. Fun Fact:
The game of golf is my passion but the game of hockey is my first love. Still play locally.
Kelly Lawson, Membership Director Kelly Lawson, Membership Director Kelly Lawson, Membership Director Kelly Lawson, Membership Director - I have been with the Section office
for five years full time, but started my journey as a junior golf intern in
2008. I am responsible for updating the National database with
employment and classification changes for all of our 1,100+ members
and apprentices. I am also the main point of contact for anyone who may
be interested in becoming a PGA Professional. As the staff liaison for the
Education Committee, I work closely with the Education Chair to provide
various educational opportunities to our professionals. Some of my other
duties include coordinating all of the Section and Chapter membership meetings and board
meetings, coordinating all of the apprentice orientations and being a liaison for the
Membership and Scholarship Committees. Please contact me with any questions regarding
your membership, classification or your MSR credits. Fun Facts: I play on an all-female flag
football team, I’m obsessed with the TV show 24, and my favorite band is Hanson.

only two. In the areas of communication, I create the weekly News &

Middle Atlantic Professional. I also oversee the content of MAPGA.com
and post regularly on the MAPGA’s social media sites on Facebook,
Twitter, and YouTube. I’m the staff liaison for the Public Relations
Committee and work together with Bob Heintz as a liaison with the Player
Development Committee. My previous experience includes being the Director of Golf Programs
for the Executive Women’s Golf Association and Assistant Professional at Barton Hills Country

Player Development Discussion: Lessons that Meet Your Golfers Needs
By Mike Aldrich, PGA
WWWWe all know and love this
golfer. It could be a woman or
a man; a 34 handicap or a
+2; brand new to the game or
a veteran of 30 years; rich or
poor, happy or gloomy. It
could be you, or your best golf
pro buddy. What they all have
in common is a tremendous
drive to improve, to have the
l a t e s t a n d g r e a t e s t
equipment, and to learn using
the latest technology. They
may want to play on the PGA
Tou r , w i n t h e C l u b
Championship, the 4th flight
in the Member-Guest, or
Monday’s charity scramble.
They are fanatical about the
game and will fly out to
Callaway to get their own
Frankenwood, seek out the
best ins t ructor (most
expensive/famous), and
practice until their hands
blister to fix their fade. They
are the jet fuel that keeps the
golf industry aloft and we
must serve their needs.
How many of the golfers who
frequent your facility fit into
this category? We all know a
couple; perhaps your club
even has a couple dozen.
This group needs technical
instruction with goals based
on scores and statistics and
the latest and greatest fitting
tools to satisfy them and your
shop probably has allocated a
lot of resources to satisfy their
needs.
Research shows that the
primary reason that 9 out of
10 of people play golf is for
recreation, exercise and social
interaction with friends and
family. Yes, they still want to
hit good golf shots, but they do
not base their enjoyment of
the game entirely on score-
based performance. What
instructional products do you
offer to satisfy this segment;
the other 90% of your golfers?
If you view your golfers on a
continuum from people whose
main motivation to play is to
get outdoors and share time
with friends to those who
would give anything for one
more shot off their handicap,
you’ll notice that most golfers
wi l l lean toward the
recreational end. Yet, most of
the resources and instruction
are focused on the fanatical
end of the continuum.
Recently, Get Golf Ready
(GGR) has provided an
important structure for
beginning golfers, most of
whom are not immediately
fanatical about our game.
Before they start working on
the skills, they need to feel
comfortable with our unique
environment and find friends
with whom to share the game.
GGR is a tool in helping make
golfers feel comfortable with
you, the golf culture, and the
golf course.
We are still left with all of
those important golfers in the
middle. These are the golfers
who are ready to improve,
but still see golf as a social
and recreational outlet.
There is GGR 2, which
increases both ski l ls
acquisition and on-course
time. Graduates of GGR2
are probably also ready for
some longer p lay ing
experiences, whether that is
in a group playing lesson or a
fun 3-hole format.
A n o t h e r e x c i t i n g
development is that some
PGA Professionals are
teaching Get Golf Ready 3.
While there is no national
program called GGR3, these
P r o f e s s i o n a l s h a v e
recognized the need to
continue the opportunity for
another level of instruction in
a more social setting. Some
golfers will migrate to private
or semi-private lessons, but
others want to continue in a
familiar format.
The bottom line is that we
need to look at our
i ns t ruc t i on p rog rams ,
m e r c h a n d i s e , a n d
tournaments with a critical
eye. Each product may
satisfy a particular segment
of your golfers, but the goal is
to have products that fit the
needs of the entire spectrum
of golfers.

TTTThe Virginia State Golf Association and the Middle Atlantic Section of The PGA of
America announced that Delta Dental of
Virginia will be the title sponsor of the
Delta Dental State Open of Virginia for
the next three years.
The 2014 Delta Dental State Open of
Virginia will be conducted at the award-
winning Ballyhack Golf Club in Roanoke
from July 17-19. Delta Dental of
Virginia’s sponsorship solidifies the
status of the championship, which brings
together top amateurs, MAPGA
profess ionals and other golf
professionals.
“We are excited about the opportunity to
sponsor this longstanding event,” said
Dr. George Levicki, president and chief
executive officer of Delta Dental of
Virginia. “This championship has a
storied history and we look forward to
supporting this special event in the
coming years.”
The State Open dates back to 1924 and
this year marks the 29th anniversary of
the “merged” Opens – prior to the merge
in 1985, two State Open championships
were held per year from 1958-85 by the
two governing organizations, the VSGA
and MAPGA.
“We’re absolutely delighted that Delta
Dental of Virginia has agreed to serve as
this event’s title sponsor over the next
three years,” said Gib Palmer, president
of the VSGA. “We look forward to working
with the MAPGA and Delta Dental of
Virginia in the coming years in continuing
to make the Delta Dental State Open of
Virginia the best it can be.”
“The Delta Dental State Open of Virginia
is an event marked on the calendars of
PGA professionals and amateurs from the
beginning of the season,” said MAPGA
President John Madden, the head PGA
professional at River Bend Golf and
Country Club in Great Falls, Va. “The
support of Delta Dental and the event’s
visit to Ballyhack will enhance the profile
of this championship.”
A national destination club with a Lester
George design as its centerpiece,
Ballyhack opened in 2009. Boasting
numerous dramatic holes and beautiful
vistas, Ballyhack lies in the foothills, just
below the Blue Ridge Parkway. The layout
features many holes with alternate
playing routes, placing a focus on
strategy, precision and shotmaking.
Ballyhack, which will be hosting the Delta
Dental State Open of Virginia for the first
time, was ranked No. 15 among
Golfweek’s “Best New Courses” for 2010.
“We’re confident that Ballyhack will help
showcase top-quality golf,” said Jonathan
Ireland, the director of operations at
Ballyhack. “The layout will
provide a quality test and
continue to add to the
Delta Dental State Open of
Virginia’s rich tradition.”
The 2014 Delta Dental State Open of
Virginia will consist of 144 competitors,
including a field of approximately 72
amateurs and 72 professionals. The
event is a 54-hole stroke-play
championship. Following the completion
of 36 holes, the field will be cut to the low
60 players and ties for the final 18 holes.
Notable past State Open of Virginia
champions include six-time winner Bobby
Cruickshank, PGA, as well as five-time
victors Jack Isaacs, PGA, and Tom
Strange, PGA, among others. Also among
those players to capture the
championship on three occasions are
Keith Decker of Martinsville and
Richmond’s Vinny Giles, who remain
amateurs, as well as PGA professional
Faber Jamerson. Former State Open of
Virginia victors who went on to play the
PGA Tour include the likes of World Golf
Hall of Fame member Lanny Wadkins as
well as Bobby Wadkins, Mark Carnevale
and Robert Wrenn.
Last year, central Virginia-based
professional Jay Woodson of Powhatan
cruised to a record-setting and historic
10-stroke victory. Woodson became the
first professional to win back-to-back
Open titles since the VSGA and MAPGA
merged. He’s also only one of two
Virginians to claim back-to-back VSGA
Amateurs (2002-03) and consecutive
State Opens. Chandler Harper won
Amateur titles in 1933-34 and State
Open crowns in 1940-41 and again in
1967-68.
