Micro-SquidHigh-resolution Eddy Correlation Sensing System

Descrip(on:The  Micro-­‐Squid   is  a   reliable  and  stable  instrument   for   the  measurement  of  scalar  microstructure.  The  instrument   supports  micro  probes   for   temperature,  conduc:vity,  oxygen,  or   fluorescence.   The   sensing   elements   are  connected   to   the  main   housing   via   flexible   connec:ons,  so   that   the   sensors   can  be  posi-­‐:oned  in  specific  loca:ons.  

The  micro-­‐Squid  is   ideal  for   use  with  Acous:c  Doppler  Velocimeters  (e.g.,  Nortek’s  Vector)  to   facilitate   eddy   correla:on   measurements   of   scalar   fluxes.  With   the   eddy   correla:on  method,  fluxes  are  determined   from   the   simultaneous  measurements  of  velocity  and   the  scalar.

Environmental  signals  generally  have  a  “red”  spectrum.  The  signal  variance  decreases  with  increasing   frequency,   which   leads   to   a   loss   of   high-­‐frequency   signal   content   during   the  sampling   process   by   the   A/D   converters.   To   maximize   the   signal   resolu:on   the   Micro-­‐Squid's  electronics  emphasizes  high   frequencies.  The  signal  output   increases  in  propor:on  to   frequency  beginning  at  0.16  Hz  and  ending  at  12  Hz.  The  emphasis  is  later  reversed  dur-­‐ing  the  signal  processing.    This  technique  is  similar  to  Dolby  noise  reduc:on  systems,  resul:ng  in  improved  bandwidth  and  resolu:on  of  the  scalar  signal.
