MICRO ORGANISMS

Useful micro organismsMicro organisms benefit us in a number of ways. their

uses can be divided into four categories:

Useful micro organisms

Commercial uses Medicinal uses

Agricultural uses

Environmental uses

Commercial uses• MAKING CURD AND CHEESE Do you know how curd

is made at home? Usually, a spoonful of curd is added to warm milk, which turns into overnight. This happens because a protein called casein present in milk coagulates to form curd. For casein to coagulate, the milk has to be acidic. A bacterium called lactobacillus , present in the spoonful of curd added to the milk, converts the lactose sugar present in milk to lactic acid. This creates the acidic environment needed for casein coagulation.

Medicinal uses

A common use of bacteria in modern medicine is as a delivery capsule for toxic drugs. The

development of a delivery capsule was a necessary advancement in the treatment of cancer.

Chemotherapy, the most common method of cancer treatment, is targeted not only for cancer cells but

all rapidly dividing cells. This includes intestinal cells, bone marrow, mucosal cells, and stomach cells,

among others. The use of chemotherapy as cancer treatment suppresses the immune system and may

cause sickness and even other cancer.

Agricultural uses•Microbes include fungi, bacteria and viruses. Farmers and ranchers often think of microbes as pests that are destructive to their crops or animals (as well as themselves), but many microbes are beneficial. Soil microbes (bacteria and fungi) are essential for decomposing organic matter and recycling old plant material. Some soil bacteria and fungi form relationships with plant roots that provide important nutrients like nitrogen or phosphorus. Fungi can colonize upper parts of plants and provide many benefits, including drought tolerance, heat tolerance, resistance to insects and resistance to plant diseases.

Environmental uses

We have become obsessed with eliminating bacteria, attacking with gels and wipes the microbes we associate with infection, illness and death. But not only are many types of bacteria actually helpful, some strains may hold the key to fighting global warming, cleaning up pollution, breaking down plastic and even developing a cure for cancer. These 11 amazing discoveries demonstrate the many ways in which microscopic organisms help maintain the health of our own bodies and the entire planet.
