Welcome to our new premises in the city
The speed of life today is worlds apart from what it was 20 years ago, let alone 50 or 100 years past. Jobs that took hours are often now done in seconds. Technology has changed our lives forever and young people have
no comprehension of a life lived without it.We are exposed daily to all that the world has to offer. We expect to do more, see more and experience more. And we do. Gen Ys in particular are persistent in their desire to make the most out of life. To seize every opportunity, take risks, be bold and be strongly individual in a world where everyone is a social media star.In this issue we have interviews with two inspirational young people – Sam Johnson who is off to Nepal again following the second earthquake there (pages 8-9) and Bink Bowler who, at 24, has learned many life lessons that many people never will (pages 56-57).On the fashion front we take a look at the variety of coats on offer this winter, they are sure to inspire you to add a statement piece to your wardrobe. For chocolate lovers the recipe in this issue will transport you straight to sweet heaven, and on the home front you will find the latest products that will have you hunkering down in Parisian or Safari style depending on your inclination. There’s plenty more to discover in this issue from a hotel made entirely of salt to the story about Idris Elba setting a new land speed record. Take time out from your speed of light life and enjoy a detour through our pages.

QA&
ocial entrepreneur Sam SJohnson, who led the Student Volunteer Army
after the Christchurch earthquakes, was quick to accept an urgent invitation to go to Kathmandu as part of his involvement with the Asia/Pacific Alliance for Peace and Development, led by the Global Peace Foundation. Sam’s latest mission is to help mobilise young volunteers using the lessons learned from voluntary disaster responses around the world. In Christchurch the Student Volunteer Army mobilised 11,000 young people who got to work in the clean-up of our streets and suburbs. I caught up with Sam to find out about the situation in Nepal and what progress he is making there…
What kind of brief did you have before
you left, and did you take a team of
volunteers?
The network I’m a part of has a wide base of young leaders in Nepal. We were on a Skype call about mobilising assistance and, as the only one who had been involved in disasters before, I offered to be on the ground in 48 hours if they wanted me; provided they could pull together a group of 50 young leaders who I could train and we could build a team with.
What area/s in Nepal have you focussed
your assistance in?
For the first day it was on the outskirts of Kathmandu, but now our focus is in Holembu district. About four hours through the mountains in very remote villages.
Is the situation there what you expected?
Worse. Heart-breaking. Every single house in every village is destroyed. They are just piles of bricks with a tin roof on top; most still with people inside as search and
rescue can’t easily get to so many remote places. People have lost a lot of food stocks, they are angry at the government, they are really hurting. But they still smile and are not grieving, but rebuilding.
How are the Nepalese youth coping and
is your ‘army’ there growing?
Remarkably well. The group is called “Rise Nepal” and is focused on mobilising people and distributing aid. There is a core group of around 15 leaders who are supported by the Global Peace Foundation staff and myself. Fellow Kiwi, Nathan Durkin, who was a lead facilitator for the SVA has arrived and is here for two weeks. We brought two young girls down from the mountains (one who was formerly a victim of human trafficking) to work in the tent factory, with ten volunteers, who are helping make 300 tents to be used for schools. Our approach, with our limited funds, is to make what we need locally and distribute it with locals; creating jobs and not getting aid jammed at the airport.

OUT & ABOUT
How are people coping in general?
It’s still urgency mode. Though a lot of people are getting sick from sleeping outside. It will get worse before it gets better.
What are the most urgent concerns for
the Nepalese?
Corruption and lack of aid flowing out to the villages. The government can only respond to 25% of the people in the country, given how dispersed the population is. People live in very remote places.
Have all of the remote villages been
reached and is assistance getting
through?
No. There are over 20,000 villages in the district where I was alone. Sherpas are starting to take bags of rice up on their backs, but it’s a long walk.
You have appealed for anyone with
medical skills to head to Nepal, what is
the situation in medical terms?
I was with a Kiwi nurse, Alyssa Lowe, most of the time, and we spent a day being an ambulance with our truck around Batase Village. We helped a lady with an eye hanging out, a mother with a three day old baby, and heaps of kids suffering major shock from falling from buildings.
We all know about aftershocks; what
have they been like in Nepal?
Different from Christchurch. More rolling than jolty. The Nepalese laughed at the thought of 11,000 aftershocks like us! They didn’t believe me.
How can Kiwis assist?
Go volunteer. Jump on a plane, pack what you need (including a tent) for two weeks and go up into the mountains and help families rescue food and move bricks from their homes. You can buy everything else you need in Kathmandu (tramping gear is all very cheap). You will find thousands of projects to help with.
It must be a very challenging situation,
how do you cope with the stress?
Focus only on the problems before you. Talk openly and vulnerably with your team, and don’t be afraid to cry. I’ve felt
Why do the worst things happen to the best
people?
like crying more this past week than in the last four years; sometimes out of shock, sometimes out of fear, sometimes out of helplessness. Why do the worst things happen to the best people?
If you could go back and tell your ten
year old self something, what would it
be?
You’re never going to have a traditional career; so don’t even try to have one.
What are you missing most from
Christchurch?
My boyfriend Tyler.

Romeo and Juliet is shorthand for romance. “I don't think that there has been another play written in 400 years that captures the passion, danger and excitement of young love,” says director Ross Gumbley. In 44 years and with over 800 productions under its belt it may be surprising that The Court Theatre has never before staged a production of Shakespeare's timeless story of star crossed lovers. But that is about to change. The Court is set to mount an epic scale production of Romeo and Juliet which will open on 30 May.Will The Court be presenting a period piece or creating something new?“We auditioned lots of periods,” says Gumbley. “We want it to sing to the audience now, not be a museum piece like a coin locked in a cabinet gathering dust.” The set draws strongly from the marble buildings in the northern Italian cities of Turin and Bologna.

Nurse Maude has been caring for the people of Canterbury since 1896, and while much of its work is in the community the Nurse Maude Hospice is an integral part of its diverse and broad scope of nursing care.

At the Nurse Maude Hospice the focus is on a home-like environment where family, friends and pets are welcome and where patients can spend their last days knowing that they are as important and loved now as they ever were throughout their life.
Thanks to the community's support of the hospice shops, Maudes on Trade Me, sponsorship and donations, Nurse Maude is able to provide specialist palliative nursing care and support to its patients and their families at no cost to them.

His realistic style no doubt started in the signwriting business in Dunedin with his father, which gave him the
ability to handle any subject and portray it clearly in perspective and to scale.
Now retired from signwriting, he has developed a very identifiable painting style, working mainly in acrylic with a cross-hatch technique that is seldom used by other artists. The result is not quite photo realism, but the wide range of subjects he presents definitely does look real.
In his first solo exhibition at Bryce Gallery, at the corner of Riccarton Road and Paeroa Street, Geoff has decided to present something fresh and personal in a broader range of subjects than he usually offers.

The calming green and white decor of Strowan Law's offices is conducive to putting clients at ease and that is what its team of lawyers sets

Indira has been in practice in New Zealand since 1994 and established Strowan Law in 2006. Lisa Kennedy has been with the firm since her admission to the bar in 2007 and is now a partner, and Jessica McCormick has recently joined the team.
Strowan Law provides a wide range of legal services including family law, conveyancing, wills, estates, powers of attorney and trusts. All three lawyers are generalists across all of the services, but they do have
their own favourite areas. “Jessica and I have a particular interest in family law,” says Lisa Kennedy. “It is an extremely rewarding field to work in, especially when you can assist with happy outcomes for children. While Indira still enjoys practising family law, in particular relationship property, she also enjoys doing trusts and conveyancing work. For her it is particularly satisfying to help young people with their first homes. The financing aspects of this can be daunting and we are here to work through those complexities.”
Strowan Law are also legal aid providers, Indira Sirisena, Jessica McCormack, Lisa Kennedy

The next AranuiAranui Cruises has provided a glimpse into the plush future of cargo cruising in Tahiti, unveiling new images of its next ship Aranui 5.Launching in 2016 with capacity for 260 passengers, the 125-metre long modern freighter will offer a range of accommodation options, from the operator's first single staterooms to new premium and deluxe categories. The renderings of the ship's interior reveal spacious cabins styled in a natural colour palette, with Polynesian flourishes including Marquesan-inspired décor, Paul Gauguin prints and original paintings by Erhard Lux, a German artist who lives part-time in Moorea. The cruise line has announced that to cater to the demand for balcony cabins, more than half of the ship's rooms (60) will feature a private balcony.

From the moment I walked in the door, I was greeted by team leader and senior stylist, Nicole who
swept me away, settled me in and offered a decadent drink list (from The Tearooms - a Christchurch institution!)
Nicole listened, she recommended and soon we had a stunning plan for a new warmer colour combination achieved with foils and an edgy, yet easy to manage cut that suits the way I manage my beauty regime.
As she performed the magic only a talented and experienced hairdresser can, she shared the Solace secrets.

are uncompromisable only the best talent will do. Then add in Debbie, the salon coordinator, there to look after every need of the client in an embracing, friendly manner. "Our clients are like family and Debbie is the glue holding us all together."
Only the best products are used and the team is excited about the introduction of Olaplex, which multiplies bonds to make hair stronger and healthier, while colour lasts longer with more vibrancy.
"We will be able to achieve colours we never could before." The addition of this magic ingredient, which in the year since its introduction onto the global market has gained cult status, will become standard in all colour treatments.
The price list was a pleasant surprise, all hair and beauty services cost less than what you would expect from a CBD salon.
As for my new look - it exceeded that awesomeness I was after. Thanks Solace, see you again soon.

Right now a remarkable coat has landed at Jean Jones stores. Named Garden Ramble by the label's social media followers, this particular
garment was followed through its life from fabric selection to design, pattern making to sewing, distribution to sale – all in New Zealand.
With a 45 year history most will know of fashion label Jean Jones, but perhaps not that the iconic Kiwi clothing company still houses its entire design and manufacturing processes in its Auckland headquarters. This means limited edition styles are immediately responsive to the market demand and can be on sale at the brands' stores within a month.
Late 2014, co-owner and head designer Gina Condon was looking towards autumn and spied a versatile, high quality black fabric with a pixelated rose print. “It was so distinctive and I knew the pops of lavender and red would make the perfect statement piece for the Jean Jones woman,” she says. “Fabrics are so important that sometimes it doesn't matter how good your style is, it has to look right,” she says. Securing all the fabric exclusively meant no other New Zealand label could offer garments made from it.

"I knew straight away it would look amazing as a flowing 3/4 coat," said Design Team Leader Tina Garrett when she saw Gina's selection. "It has such a luxurious Victorian, vintage wallpaper feel, so we designed a coat with a pleated shawl collar, large fabric covered buttons, brass eyelets and added hidden side pockets,” she says. “Because everyone needs pockets in a coat!"
The design went through the patternmaker to an onsite cutter and machinist to create a sample for fitting. Final adjustments were made to the one-off creation; patterns adjusted, graded and sent to production.
"I knew straight away it would look amazing as a flowing 3/4 coat,
it has such a luxurious Victorian,
vintage wallpaper feel.”
The photoshoot stylist thought a juxtaposed, textured environment would best show off the print, so while Tina made an intricate lace collar for the neckline she chose a regal looking model, Operetta wallpaper from Aspiring Walls, elaborately carved wooden furniture and satin pillowslips from Xia.
Followers of Jean Jones social media suggested and voted for the garments name, and the newly christened 'Garden Ramble Coat' entered its production phase. A skilled team of cutters laid and cut out the fabric while the collars and facings were block fused. Sewn and pressed by local machinists, the coats were dispatched to 22 stores across the country.
“Now our part of the tale of a coat ends and 60 new stories begin,” says Gina. “We were proud to have customers join us on the Made in New Zealand journey of the Garden Ramble and can't wait to see how new and existing clients of Jean Jones wear and love it.”

Newly arrived is the second collection by Third Form. Created by Australian designer Merryn Kelly, Raw Nova has stocked her distinctive collections
exclusively in Christchurch from their inception, with Third Form's signature look developed through the designer's blog and Instagram feed.
Third Form describes itself as a curated balance between minimalist sophistication, street edge and the female form, with styles designed with simplistic silhouettes, a mostly monochrome palette and subtle fabric combinations.
“If you like her designs like we do, you will want all her pieces,” says Gail, who along with Allie has carefully hand-picked this collection, and all other items at Raw Nova.
All pieces in Third Form are made to be worn together, with a creative edge applied to classics such as a long black wool coat, cross over lounge pants, and a white fall away blouse.
A stand out item from the collection is the Side Swipe Jumpsuit. Available in black and white, for Third Form the jumpsuit is a new take on evening layering, with asymmetric cut layers built into a classic cut strapless jumpsuit, designed to be worn with heels and boots.
Fresh winter looks forShades of black, white and grey, and splashes of rich vibrant gold are scattered throughout Raw Nova. For the design store which prides itself on its fresh and bold take on fashion and homeware, there is much to choose from over the winter season.

PLANET'S MOST POWERFUL ANTIOXIDANT IS
REDWhat is a tiny krill's secret weapon, gives salmon its leap in rapids, a carrot its orange, and adds fire to flamingo feathers?
It's the red pigment molecule called astaxanthin in the marine micro algae Haematococcus pluvialis.
It became known as the King of Carotenoids and the planet's most powerful antioxidant around about four years ago after Dr Joseph Mercola described its potency in a TV slot on Dr Oz.The effects of astaxanthin were validated in more than 500 scientific studies including 100 human clinical studies: Ÿ 500 times stronger than vitamin EŸ 6000 times stronger than vitamin CŸ 800 times stronger than CoQ10Ÿ 550 times stronger than green tea
catechins. It is still the most powerful natural antioxidant and free radical scavenger on the planet because, unlike many antioxidants that deal with one free radical at a time, astaxanthin's molecular structure lets it capture and neutralise multiple free radicals simultaneously. Because it is fat and water soluble, it can
span the outer and inner membranes of the body's cells, preventing free radicals from entering cells and causing damage.Unlike other antioxidants that, under certain circumstances can become pro-oxidants and behave as free radicals themselves, astaxanthin cannot. Nor can it be converted to vitamin E, which is dangerous in high doses, like some antioxidants. Astaxanthin is also one of the few antioxidants that can penetrate the eye and blood-brain barrier.Today, science has also discovered that astaxanthin has many other validated benefits that almost outweigh its role as a potent antioxidant.Clinical research proves impressive results for supporting a healthy heart, healthy
HDL (cholesterol) and triglyceride balance; healthy joints, muscles and fast recovery from exercise; stamina, endurance and reduced fatigue; healthy eyes and vision; premature ageing prevention; plus it acts as a natural sun filter for the inner and outer layers of skin. The purest, most natural astaxanthin is manufactured in Nelson, New Zealand, at state-of-the-art facilities, where it is sustainably extracted from red micro algae.Astaxanthin is available at allHealth 2000 stores, such as Health 2000 South City, Avonhead, Barrington, Merivale, Northlands, Riccarton, and Rangiora. Resource: Health 2000.
NZ astaxanthin is scientifically formulated by international medical specialist Dr Robert Corish.
Flamingos digest algae with the red pigment astaxanthin, which gives them their colour.
Supreme Biotechnologies' state-of-the-art facility in Nelson sustainably extracts and manufactures AstaSupreme 100 percent natural astaxanthin.

Unlike depictions in popular fiction (think X+Y, Rain Man, and Mercury Rising) which might leave us imagining all people with autism as card-counting, code-breaking savants, the lived experience of children with autism and their families is widely varied, with needs changing at each age and stage.
UNDERSTANDING AUTISM
What families of children with autism do have in common is the need for
understanding unshackled from stereotype, and clear, non-judgemental, trusted information.
“A decade or so ago a diagnosis of autism would leave a parent bewildered and isolated. Now the problem is not so much a lack of information as a plethora of information, much of which is, in fact, misinformation,” says Professor Jordan, Emeritus Professor in Autism Studies, University of Birmingham. Professor Jordan
welcomes Understanding Autism as a tool to help parents cut through the clutter and regain control over choosing what is best for them and their child.
Written by two leading experts in the field, Understanding Autism is the essential reference for parents and carers of children with autism, and explores everything from the causes of autism to how it manifests at the various ages and stages of a child's life. Drawing on the authors' years of clinical experience as well as the latest research, it also covers the importance of self-care for parents, how to cope with common problematic
behaviours, conditions that can often appear in conjunction with autism (such as anxiety and depression), common health issues, and how best to manage the child's transition to adulthood.
Case studies provide practical examples for parents and their families, empowering them to deal with professionals, cope with the stresses they face, and better understand their young person's autism.
Understanding Autism is available from www.exislepublishing.co.nz and wherever good books are sold. RRP$34.99

Owner Ken Fulton is the first to admit that to the general public tattoo studios have a somewhat
daunting air about them - it is exactly this view that All About Art is set to change.
“The studio is mainly about customised work,” says Ken. “It's not just about the tattoo - it's the entire experience.”
This begins as soon as customers are welcomed into the spacious studio. All clients receive a free half hour consultation with their selected artist to talk over ideas for their tattoo, with clients ranging from those returning for more work to those embarking on their first tattoo experience. A design is drawn on paper, and then on the skin, giving clients the opportunity to get a feel for the skin art before they commit to the tattoo itself.
The very best equipment and ink are used for the tattooing process, and thanks to Ken's background in health a strict sanitisation and hygiene procedure is followed.
“He is an amazing artist,” says Ken of tattoo artist Steve, who has a post graduate art degree and nearly 20 years in the industry. Steve's finely detailed and precise work is recognised worldwide, with much of his tattooing completed

Some grow up knowing exactly what they want on their big day, changing things in their minds along the way as trends and fashion change. But what if
ideas don't come flowing as you thought they might? These tips might be a good starting place for you.
1. What do you want from your wedding? Do you want it to be a simple, elegant affair? Less than 80 guests? More than 150? Know exactly what you want.
2. What is your budget? $2000? $10,000? More?3. What is your theme? Will you go with a current trend? Will you
forget the latest trends and throw a superhero-themed wedding? Know which theme you want, then everything else seems to slot into place.
4. Where will it be? A local chapel with the reception in the church hall? A beautiful garden? Perhaps a destination wedding?
5. Who is coming? This is a big deal. You don't want to accidentally leave anyone that matters off the list. It's happened before and you don't want to be the one that creates hurt and awkwardness among friends and family.
6. Who's catering? Which photographer will you choose? What music will you walk up the aisle to, and dance your first dance to? Who's in your wedding party? Who is doing your makeup? What will you wear? What will everyone else wear?
When it comes to planning your wedding day, knowing where to start is often the hardest part…
First things FIRST

CANTERBURY BRIDE
First things FIRSTThere are literally a hundred questions to ask, but only one to focus on for now: what is your theme?
keep to your own style and what suits you.
Add your own twists of awesome.
When designing your wedding, as that's exactly what you're doing, having a theme is the
first thing you want to do. Know your theme. Start with a blank Word document and type out everything that comes to mind. Do some research. If you want to go with a current trend Pinterest is always going to be a great starting place. It can either be your best friend or give you an overwhelming sense of confusion and dread.
Recent bride Lily Simons says 'boho' is
trending at the moment - “big floral arrangements are everywhere, floral crowns, and boho dresses that only Victoria's Secret models can wear.”
Simons loves the leafy green look with flowers hanging as far as the eye can see but feels this look may date. She believes “looking like a fairy on your wedding day is divine: I would have loved to incorporate this but it didn't suit my natural state as a person. I am vintage and I love bringing old with new.”
Rather than go for the current boho
trend, Simons went for 'rustic carnivals'. “People say [this] has been done but I feel it had classic, simple elements. My dress lace was made to look older - more 'Gatsby classic' with a jewelled head piece for a 'classic romantic'. I had a champagne lace which is also very current but I added my own twists of awesome.”
Her advice is “do what you know and love! Think about your images 20 years from now. Not about what Pinterest or Vogue Weddings are telling you to do. Just do you!”

Destination-wedding bride Jess Williams sees the current trends as anything DIY, photobooths, vintage, pastel colours and natural materials.
Williams says she got carried away with wanting to incorporate things into her wedding but it wasn't practical taking it over in her luggage, so instead of going with a current trend she ended up as 'Fiji' being her theme.
She encourages other brides to “keep to your own style and what suits you.
It's easy to try and keep up with everyone else. Pinterest can sometimes be your enemy and get overwhelming and then you have too many ideas. Keep it simple and have a few special things. Stick to budget.”
Williams says it's easy to stray, so recommends checking out cheaper department stores, op shops and fairs to keep costs down.
Doing research and not being afraid to ask the silly questions, is also
important, she says. “It will put your 'bridezilla' mind at ease in regard to destination weddings. Williams found joining a Facebook page for Fiji brides was helpful at finding all the information she needed - from nail colours to filling out wedding applications.
Williams' final piece of advice - don't sweat the small stuff: “On the day I didn't even notice the small things I'd spent so much time worrying about.”

METHOD
Grease a 24cm tart tin with a removable base. For the biscuit base, put the biscuits in a freezer bag and crush them with a rolling pin or whizz in the food processor. Melt the butter in a pan over a gentle heat. Once the butter is melted, remove from the heat and add the crushed biscuits, mix well to combine. Tip the mixture into the flan tin and press down well in an even layer along the base and up the sides of the tin. Set aside to cool. Heat the condensed milk, butter and 1 tsp of salt in a pan over a low heat until smooth and creamy. Taste and add more salt if you think you would like it more salty. Spoon the salted caramel into the flan shell and refrigerate for 2–3 hours or until set.To make the dark chocolate ganache, place the cream in a small saucepan and heat until almost boiling, making sure it doesn't burn. Add the chocolate and stir until the chocolate is melted and the mixture is smooth. Set aside to cool for 10 minutes or until thickened slightly. Pour the chocolate mixture over the caramel and refrigerate for 1–2 hours or until set. Bring to room temperature before serving and sprinkle over extra chocolate.

Apparently the duo consumed their body weight in ribs during a recon' mission through Louisiana, Tennessee and Texas in 2013, the aim of which was to investigate the concept of the American barbeque and how it could be applied in New Zealand.

Coriander's restaurant in Rolleston is having a makeover, taking on the elegant Bollywood theme that is making the new Coriander's at 222 St Asaph Street such an exciting venue.
Pure INDIA: Bollywood ambience
Rolleston's Corianders was established in 2007, the first of the successful chain of
Coriander's ethnic North Indian restaurants owned by Amardeep Singh. It was followed by Edgeware, Kaikoura, Hanmer and most recently, the jewel in the crown, St Asaph Street.
The Rolleston restaurant seats almost
100 guests in two dining areas. New decor includes an abundance of mirrors, and walls covered with colourful Bollywood posters. A separate entrance is being created for takeouts, allowing diners to enjoy their Bollywood ambience without interruption.
Takeout meals are a big part of the Coriander's business and can be ordered online.
“It's very popular and works well and of course the dishes are of the same high
standards that we serve in the restaurants,” Amardeep says.
Almost all the Coriander's favourite dishes are available on the takeout menu, including the signature sizzling platters. Restaurant reservations can also be made online. Coriander's Rolleston is open 11.30am to 2pm and 5pm to 10pm. It is fully licensed and BYO.

Rose patterned vintage china and antique bric-à-brac sparkles and shines on dressers and china
cabinets in this charming and welcoming shabby chic cafe, mingling with old magazines, cards, and paintings old and recent. Many of these intriguing objets d'art are for sale, but for most customers, simply browsing provides entertainment enough.
Charming shabby chicAlmost everything's coming up roses at the Rose Cafe on Papanui Road.
Customers sit at tables with rose patterned lace-trimmed oilcloth fabric cloths, which like the patchwork cushions, are handmade by the owner. She also grows the roses that, grouped in informal bouquets in antique jam jars or cut crystal glasses, are placed around the cafe and on each table. And when the 140 rose bushes finish flowering, other fresh garden blooms will take their place.
And while the decor is delicious, so is the food. An all-day menu offers dishes that range from breakfast eggs to freshly made seasonal soups and toasties. Waffles, served with syrup, banana and ice-cream are a cafe favourite. In the cabinet are delicate savouries with light
as air pastry, fluffy scones, muffins, and gluten-free quiche and potato cakes, served with salads and more. Sweet things include a selection of tempting slices and all food is made on the premises. This is a quaint, chic cafe, where customers are made to feel like honoured guests in someone's home – thanks to a combination of attentive service and the wonderful display of antiques, which come from the owner's personal, much loved collection!
Rose Cafe has plenty of regular customers and it is wise to make a booking, especially for groups.

Protocol: a system of rules that explain the correct conduct and procedures to be followed…
FollowingAnd while this definition seems very formal – the service, atmosphere and food at Protocol
Public House and Kitchen is the opposite. It's warm, inviting, and relaxed. What the protocol refers to is the consistency of always delivering top quality, warm service and consistently honest food of the highest standards.
Protocol's owners Natasha and Rod purchased the former Elevate Restaurant and Bar on Colombo Street at the base of the hills – closed it for four days, and reopened the doors last month to an extensive, and frankly, breath-taking makeover.
While it's completely modern and contemporary, it exudes warmth and welcome with chairs and booths beckoning you to get comfortable, hang out for brunch, lunch or dinner, or simply settle in for a quiet drink and catch up with friends.
The outdoor areas radiate a 'come hither' feeling with fire tables and lanterns adding warmth and comfort.
This couple are no strangers to running top notch eating houses. For eight years they have operated the successful Ma Maison Restaurant and Bar in Akaroa. Rod
PROTOCOLhas brought across his passionate, contemporary, yet simple approach to great food, dramatically changing the menu at Protocol. In addition to adding a brunch and lunch menu, and a well populated kids' menu, he added many classic favourites. The menu now allows you to enjoy lighter, more casual meals anytime of the day. A mouth-watering pizza menu adds yet another level of choice and interest to evening dining.
Sunday afternoons are set to become legendary with live jazz music, starting from next week. However, every day of the week features something a bit special for Protocol regulars, including Happy Tuesday, Clubcard Thursdays or TGIF specials. And then there are the two attractively appointed function rooms.

The
The Villas, that popular dining and coffee house on Montreal, is famed for its fabulous food, extensive

exciting mid winter feast menu.

The sun is shining and there's a cool breeze from behind, catching salmon in the Tekapo canals is how Katie likes to spend her spare time when she is not working on their sheep station just outside Fairlie.
FORAGE
Limited edition salmon dish, oven baked with a hint of Manuka smoke on a salad of cherry tomatoes, walnuts and roasted red peppers, plum sorbet and rye toast.
Enticing
Available from 1 June to 31 July, for evening dining in the elegant upstairs rooms in the Blue Villa, this is the ideal opportunity for a mid winter
celebration for groups of 12 to 48 or more.Like the surroundings, the three course menu is elegant.
It begins with a choice of Crayfish Bisque or Chicken and Pistachio Filo followed by either Grass Fed Beef Fillet with a pinot jus, Red Wine Braised Duck with potato gratin and wilted greens, or Maple Baked Salmon on Kumara rosti, with a baby spinach walnut salad and horseradish crème fraiche. Dessert is either Steamed Black Forest Pudding or Milk & Cookies - Spiced Christmas cookies with a warm vanilla nutmeg 'milkshake'.
The Villas caters for functions from “four to forty-four” in the Blue Villa, although the whole venue (that's the Yellow and Blue Villas) can be made available with plenty of notice.
mid winter feast
With lady luck on her side she will come away with her bag limit to take home and put through the smoker, which is great because as with most friends I know, some will come my way.About the same time I am normally stuck halfway up the glorious plum tree in our backyard that loves to rain its bounty all over the lawn. As a result there is more than enough for me to share with her, be it fresh or some homemade jam or sauce. The sharing of excess gave me the inspiration for our limited edition salmon dish, oven baked with a hint of Manuka smoke on a salad of cherry tomatoes, walnuts and roasted red peppers, plum sorbet and rye toast. I think the hint of smoke with the salmon is a classic and a marriage made in heaven, with the plum sorbet helping to cut through the oils in the salmon, which can sometimes put people off this king of the river, refreshing the palate as you go. This dish is available for a limited time, so why not pop down to The Villas, grab a glass of Ara Single Estate Pinot Noir to go with it and share a moment with someone close to you.

We sit down to chat at his new premises, the Black and White Coffee Cartel in
Victoria Street. He gently places beside me a wooden tray containing a decanter of single origin Cuban coffee and a cup. “Let it cool a bit,” he advises. “You should be able to taste apple.”
He starts to talk. Lightly be-whiskered, heavily tattooed, and wearing a cheese-cutter cap, he is endearingly frank and
remarkably humble. His story began in Wanaka. “I fell in love
with coffee when I was 15,” he says. “I was driven. I wanted to study coffee. It's a complex beverage and it's the second most traded commodity in the world.”
At 16 he moved to Christchurch to work at Bean Scene. Three years later he and three mates bought their own coffee roaster in a garage in Napier. Flight Coffee was born and, true to its name, took off.
The quartet wanted their own cafe and knew it had to be in Wellington which was ripe for the international explosion of coffee geeks passionate about single origin coffee.
They discovered a dilapidated dairy in Dixon Street, signed the lease without reading it, borrowed money from friends and family, redecorated furiously, grabbed some op shop furniture, and opened the doors of Memphis Belle.

Bink Bowler is just 24 but he's learned life lessons that many people never will. He has gone from terrific highs to terrible lows, business
success to penury and back in just five action packed years.
And it's all thanks to coffee.
Neither he nor his partners had any idea about a business plan, cash flow, or wages.
“We had no permits – I was a real cowboy,” says Bink. He was just 19. The cafe was an instant success. “Half of Wellington was queuing outside the door every day. It was insane.”
Memphis Belle won awards. So did Flight Coffee and both gained international acclaim. But the businesses were diverging. Flight was the corporate brother, Memphis Belle the “hippy wild child”. The partners split and Bink kept Memphis Belle. “I thought I was untouchable. I didn't realise that a business owner has responsibilities too.”
He opened a nightclub that was “a massive fail”. Suddenly the young entrepreneur was in financial strife. He called in a bookkeeper, but he had kept no records. He was invited to Hawaii to open a Memphis Belle and came back to find the original in financial ruins and that he owed the IRD $70,000. “I was
the solo director of two failing businesses. All my dreams were shattered,” he says.
“I sold Memphis Belle for $1 a share as a going concern and kept 20%. I was emotionally attached - it had been my whole life.” Bink attempted to open a Memphis Belle in Melbourne, but it was less than welcoming. He then tried Bangkok, where he found a third world country not ready for upmarket coffee.
It was there he hit rock bottom. Then he saw the poverty around him
and realised he was actually lucky. “I had nothing in monetary terms but I had
health, family, and experience. I had everything,” he says.
“I knew that if I didn't get back up and do it again it would all be a waste. Failure is the biggest success I have had.”
Back in New Zealand he worked on his vision for The Black and White Coffee Cartel, his “perfect cafe.” This time he started with a proper business plan. All he needed was money.
Enter Angel Investments and shareholder Rueben Thorne. (Bink had to Google to find why the name was familiar). Now the rest is history. The Black and White Coffee Cartel is up and running and Bink is in his element, throwing his not inconsiderable energies in running the business responsibly and serving and educating Christchurch on the complexities of his beloved beverage.
“Without Reuben Thorne 'taking a punt' this project would not have been possible,” he says.
And yes, I did detect the fresh sharp hint of green apples in that brew.

CHINESE MEDICINE'S HEALING POTENTIALBy Cheryl Colley
Chinese medicine is widely used all over the world. Interest in receiving the therapy of this kind of medicine has been growing in Christchurch as people realise its value in treating diseases and maintaining health without side effects. “Thousands of years ago, Chinese medicine discovered that in our body, there is a vital energy flowing along the meridians called Qi that determines our health condition. Disease occurs when Qi is blocked. By treating the root causes rather than just symptoms, Chinese medicine provides great benefits to our natural healing potential,” explains Dr Li Hong.

and constant communication is vital for our vendors, so they are equipped to make an informed decision once an offer is presented to them, to enable them to confidently move on to the next important stage of their journey,” Debra says.
She explains that Smart Real Estate has become a market leader since bursting into the market more than a year ago. By utilising smart real estate techniques and innovative marketing the company is able to market and sell your property for a low one percent commission rate (fees apply) which leaves more money in your back pocket while the high quality of your

“It's our point of difference,” Debra says.
“We use the best photographer in the business and carefully select targeted media.”
It's clearly the smart way, she believes, with numerous real estate companies imitating the smart marketing methods which have ensured her strong market position. Debra is flattered other companies are pushing smart marketing as this helps boost her profile.

The deep, richly delicious colours of winter comfort food are the stars of the table with the new season's colour palette for tableware.
Think slow roasts, succulent braises, rich curries and caramelised vegetables – all look their absolute best on this season's tableaux of neutrals in crockery and textiles. And while soft greys, warm whites and earthy shades are synonymous with 'neutral' the far more dramatic – and elegant – black is now firmly in the 'neutral' camp.Noritake is squarely in the frame for the latter category with its beautifully textured BoB collection of fine porcelain dinnerware. Each piece carries the evocative 'dune' patterning that creates interest while never overpowering the visual temptation of the food. www.noritake.com.au.

International endorsement for outstanding design, acknowledgement of benchmark safety features and an ability to produce highly impressive waffle slices in

Another was to provide a more decorative cutting option to elevate the standard of food preparation to a more professional level. The PL8 achieved all of this and more, being Highly Commended in the international Red Dot design awards 2014.Available from kitchenware retailers nationwide.

SWITCHED ON: ELECTRICAL SOLUTIONS
By Cheryl Colley
“I had been trying for months, without success, to find an electrician who would be willing to come along and complete a list of small electrical repair jobs when by chance I noticed Simon's advertisement in a recent edition of Metropol. I quickly sent off an email enquiring if he was potentially interested in the work and much to my surprise Simon almost instantaneously replied even though it was a public holiday weekend. And almost as quickly it seemed the work was efficiently completed. Thanks Simon. Job well done and an excellent speedy service to boot.” - Richard
“A variety of work and a variety of environments are what interest me,” says Simon Wheeler of Wheeler Electrical. “No job is too small from installing a new heater, towel rail or extra sockets to checking out faults and fixing them or upgrading existing lighting with energy efficient LED systems.”

When presented with the opportunity to rebuild the home of an elderly woman after it was destroyed in the Canterbury earthquakes, ADNZ member Peter Wynyard took a unique approach to design an inspiring and contemporary home…
Peter Wynyard is the founding director of Christchurch architectural design practice
Archimetrix. He has a wealth of design experience, having worked on a variety of commercial and residential projects in both New Zealand and the United Kingdom.
Since the destructive Canterbury earthquakes of 2010 and 2011, Peter has
seen a change in his client base, with the Archimetrix team being increasingly engaged by insurance companies, and their project managers, to redesign and work on plans for homes that were destroyed by the quakes. One of these post-quake projects involved the design of a house for a woman in her eighties whose home in the Christchurch hillside suburb of Mount

Pleasant was left in need of a rebuild. While her friends had tried to talk her out of rebuilding in the area, she was firm in her desire to stay. The original brick and tile bungalow had been her home for many years, and although she was upset following its collapse, Peter worked closely with her to design the plans for an updated home suited to her lifestyle and modern building trends. Peter says he first looked at ways the original home could be improved. The three bedroom uninsulated house was cold, dark and gloomy, with small wooden windows set high on the walls, providing limited sunlight and warmth. It had dated features, and a basement laundry that only had external access."The challenge for us was to devise an alternative design solution that would cost no more than replicating the original home. We analysed the way the original house was built, and looked at how we could assign and transfer savings to gain improved design features including extra
windows to capture the sun and views," says Peter. The new home is slightly smaller than the original, with the utility space on the lower level removed to make way for an improved single level design. The interior now features an open-plan living area with a raked ceiling and lower windows allowing for better views of the estuary, while also creating a feeling of space and openness."The art is to use space better. Combining the kitchen, dining and living spaces has actually resulted in a smaller area overall, but the sense of space is much greater," says Peter. As well as updating the home's interior, Peter also made changes to the exterior.

Instead of using brick like the original dwelling, the new house is clad with Palliside and Colorsteel which complement each other in a collaboration of design style. The final design is a great example of a rebuild success story in post-quake Christchurch. Peter and the Archimetrix team have designed a home that meets the client's needs and allows her to remain in the spot she has called home for so long.
The art is to usespace better.“

“The small car platform was a landmark development in 1995 and developed at the right time in the company’s history. It remains a benchmark in light weight and efficiency and is as advanced and market-leading today as it was 20 years ago,” says Lotus CEO Jean-Marc Gales. The small car platform underpins the current Elise and Exige models, with the same aluminium extruded and bonded technology used in the new Lotus Evora 400. Gales also says this platform will also serve as a base for a special edition Elise to be launched this year.“We are especially delighted that the 40,000th version of our small car platform will underpin, appropriately, an Elise 20th Anniversary model, the latest Elise model that celebrates our landmark achievements.”
