Objectives1. Decide how change connects to project management2. Decide on metrics for successful change -
participation/adoption3. Create an easy to follow lifecycle4. Build the knowledge, skills and attitudes to manage
change5. Issues on the horizon but not yet core activities
7
Connecting change management to projectsAssumption: Your organisation already has a well worked out approach to managing projects and it has trained project managers.
Decision: Incorporate change management activities into your existing project management methodology or build a new change management practice
8
Identify metrics for successful changeAssumption: Existing benefits measures are a lagging not leading indicator.
Decision: What can we measure to provide evidence that change is likely to be fully adopted:• Participation across all levels of staff• Participation rates have increased during the change• Activities to prepare for the new environment have
been identified, resourced and completed.
9
Create an easy to follow lifecycleAssumption: Your organisation already has procedures for how it does lots of other business tasks so formalising how to manage change places this capability on the same footing as other core business activities.
Challenge: Change is a psychological process. We are in the business of creating new ways of working, building new habits. So is there a step by step process that can codify the creation of new behaviours?
10
Develop the skills to manage changeAssumption: Change needs careful guidance, it doesn’t happen by accident so we need to build a well informed, skilled group of in-house leaders to guide change in their sphere of influence.
Challenge: Not everyone wants to be a change expert and they don't want to be overwhelmed by yet more processes so keep it simple, intuitive.
11
Issues on the horizon but not core activities:• Defining the competencies for change leadership into
middle management roles and making them part of the performance appraisal
• Including change management as a specific part of maturity assessments - even though Change Management Institute has done some work in this area.
