METHODS OF PRESENTING

THE ART SUBJECT

ETYMOLOGY OF FAUVISM

The phrase "Les Fauves" means "Wild Beasts“ because of the

brilliant colors and expressive

brushworks.

The Fauves represented the first break with the artistic traditions of the past. The movement's emphasis on

formal values and expressive use of color, line, and

brushwork helped liberate painting from the

representational expectations that had dominated Western art since the Renaissance.

Fauvism was the first explosive 20th-century art movement.

Influenced !!!

Local color was rejected in favor of arbitrary color: tree trunks were red, outlined in dark purple, the sky is yellow and green, and the background heaves upward with undulating shapes. Descriptive line was freed from mimes and, like the colors, become expressionistic.

DRAWING and COLORS

Fauvism was, above all, a balance between the purely visual sensation

and a personal and internal emotion, conveyed through

mixed technique and formal dislocations.

Fauves used solid colors throughout,

and depended entirely upon the intensity of his colors to create depth and shape.
