Chirmn’s Report
To sy tht the lst 12 months hs been chllenging for our bnk nd our locl people would be n understtement. District businesses, horticulturlists nd the community in generl hve been doing it tough, with low commodity nd low wter lloctions.
However, I m hppy to report to you tht our bnk hs wethered the storm nd hs continued to grow, even if not s fst s we would like. We re however, moving forwrd more quickly now s the economy recovers nd this hs come bout by your continued support nd hrd work by your bord nd bnk stff. Our Mnger Rob Libchrd will give you more detiled snpshot of our chievements for the lst 12 months.
Plenty of bnk ctivity nd severl grnt lloctions hve been hppening this yer nd we continue to give finncil support to worthy pplicnts s soon s funds become vilble.
Your bord nd bnk stff, hve been busy prticipting in locl events, in prticulr our fifth birthdy prty nd the Merbein Centenry Celebrtions. All of these events put your bnk in the public eye nd hopefully ttrct new business.
In thnking ll Directors nd bnk stff for their untiring work, I would like to cknowledge in prticulr our Secretry Jenette. believe you me she does tremendous mount of voluntry work on your behlf nd does so in very professionl wy. Mny thnks to Jenette.
In closing this report, I would like to sk ll shreholders to continue to support your bnk nd encourge others to cll in nd hve chrt to our friendly stff. They would be more thn hppy to help you if they cn.

brnch Mnger’s ReportFor yer ending 30 June 2009
It gives me gret plesure to report on the progress of Merbein & District Community bnk® brnch to our vlued shreholders for the yer ended 30 June 2009.

This community enggement ws certinly highlighted during Merbein’s Centenry Celebrtions held during August this yer. A Messge from bendigo bnk
2008/09 will go down s one of the most tumultuous finncil yers in history. The globl finncil crisis nd its ftermth wiped trillions of dollrs off the world’s net welth. Some of the biggest nmes in interntionl bnking disppered; mny other bnks – vstly bigger thn bendigo nd Adelide bnk Ltd – turned to governments to bil them out. not surprisingly, confidence sgged, reflected in rising unemployment nd stock mrkets flling by round hlf their former vlutions.
In short, we hve seen the biggest finncil meltdown since the Gret Depression of nerly 80 yers go. Amidst ll tht turmoil, though, our grssroots bnking movement mrched stedily on. Twenty new Community bnk® brnches joined bendigo nd Adelide bnk Ltd’s ntionl network. Around 120,000 new customers switched to the bendigo style of bnking. And 70 more communities continued their locl cmpign to open Community bnk® brnch.
Those sttistics re impressive in themselves, but it is the story behind them tht is relly importnt. Tht’s the story of ordinry people – n wful phrse, but you know wht I men – who inherently understnd tht the role of bnk is to feed into prosperity, rther thn profit from it. Tht lesson ws forgotten by mny bnkers cross the globe, with devstting consequences. but it is now well understood by the residents of 237 towns nd suburbs tht own their own Community bnk® brnch, becuse every dy they see the fruits of their investment in loclly owned bnking.
Agin, the sttistics re impressive enough – $29 million pid out in community projects nd nerly $11 million in locl shreholder dividends. but gin, the rel stories lie behind the numbers – new community centres nd fire trucks, more locl nurses, new wlking trcks nd swimming pools, sfer young drivers, more trees nd fewer wsteful incndescent globes, innovtive wter-sving projects… the list goes on.
And of course more money retined nd spent loclly. And more jobs. Fifteen hundred or so just in the brnches lone. More becuse of the flow-on, or multiplier, effect of those wges being spent loclly. And yet more becuse of the extr shopping now done in communities mde more prosperous nd ctive by hving their own bnk brnch.
Community bnk® brnches hve not escped the fllout from the globl turmoil. Like bendigo nd Adelide bnk Ltd, they hve received less income thn in norml times. but lso like bendigo nd Adelide bnk Ltd, they hve not needed nyone’s help to get through this crisis. And every dy we re reminded tht bnks tht re relevnt nd connected loclly will be vlued by their customers nd communities. For the better of ll.
