If you don’t know Cliff Roles, what can we say but “Welcome to town!” Since arriving on the scene
six years ago, Roles has been a high-profile fixture in the local arts and social arenas. The U.K. native
has exhibited an astonishing array of talents as an award-winning actor, radio show host, writer and
circus ringmaster.
He is widely known for his generous support of the area’s worthy causes as a consummate auctioneer
and master of ceremonies. His engaging personality and delightful British accent have added more
than a soupcon of sophistication to dozens of galas and fundraisers.
Having made a career of promoting superstars like Robert Plant, Bon Jovi and Celine Dion, Roles
latest endeavor takes him back behind the scenes, or in this case behind the lens, shining the spotlight
on others. “Working with all those rock stars and watching top photographers working with them, it
seemed natural for me to take the camera and do the photographs myself,” he says.
Roles versatility shines through in the diversity of his work from head shots to fashion shoots as well as
up-close portraits of tigers and the somewhat tamer denizens displayed in this Men on the Scene issue.
He credits his beautiful wife, Maria, as the strong, quiet presence who has helped him achieve success.
What’s next? “You have to be versatile in this town, and I’m not sure where I’m going with this,” Roles
says, “but I do know I haven’t finished yet.”
With his silver mane
and dazzling smile,
this multi-talented
man about town is

Pictured in front of the Payne Mansion” from left to right: Thomas W. Kochis, Robert W. Brown, Orion Marx and Darren B. Howard.
The men leading Atlas Insurance combine professional expertise and experience with a
dedication to service that is based on earning, and keeping, their clients’ trust. The agency
provides a full line of personal risk insurance, including home, auto, boat and umbrella
coverage as well as commercial insurance for businesses, which includes property, liability
and workers compensation. Financial service offerings are available through the firm offering
employee benefits and individual financial and retirement planning and life insurance.
With Atlas Insurance’s
fifty-seven year company
history, these men live up
to their insurance and
employee benefits clients’
expectations by focusing
on substance and keeping
promises. Each of these
family men give of their
time to support and aid
local children.
Atlas Insurance is built on the solid foundation established by Lee Brown in 1953 and
continued under the stewardship of Robert P. Brown and his son, Robert W., who is
now the firm’s president. “My Granddad is 101 now,” Brown said. “We take him out
to dinner once a week, and he always asks ῾how’s business’.” That legacy of dedication
has served the firm well. Brown says client retention is significantly better than the
industry average, even in this recessionary economy. “People stay with us because
we focus on keeping the promises we’ve made,” he said. “Our proactive client service
and advice is what we sell and what makes the client experience a positive one.”
Brown says he and his partners take a conservative approach to business, favoring the
tried-and-true over the f lash-in-the-pan products, saying they place a high value on
stability. “I don’t want to be the guy picking up the pieces. We deal with our friends
and neighbors, and we want to be able to look them in the eye.”
As a lifelong area resident, Brown feels those strong ties to the community. He
cherishes the friendship and memory of Christy Payne Jr., son of Christy Sr., who
built the Payne Mansion at Selby Gardens (pictured). “He loved to fish and he loved
Sarasota, as I do”. Brown said. Today, he and his partners are also doing their best
to support area children through the firm’s donations to local charities and their
own volunteer work. Although Brown is responsible for the firm’s operations, he also
works with clients as do the firm’s other partners. He has been active in his profession
and community through various directorships and volunteer opportunities. He has
held a Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) designation for more than 20 years.
Darren Howard is a general partner in the firm. He has a degree in Risk Management &
Insurance and holds a Chartered Property & Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation.
The fourth-generation Sarasotan also is active in the community with local schools and
has coached many youth sports teams. He is a member of the Sarasota Kiwanis Club
and is past president of the Sarasota Association of Independent Insurance Agents.
Tommy Kochis is also a Certified Insurance Counselor who manages the agency’s sales
team. He came to Sarasota as a child and strives to give back to the community he grew
up in through personal and business commitments. He is active in coaching area youth
and is on the Board of Directors for the Sarasota Association of Independent Agents.
In his spare time he fully enjoys sharing the aspects of Sarasota that he loved as a child
with his own family.
Orion Marx is a managing partner of the firm Atlas Financial. He is responsible for
the team of 10 professionals who provide employee benefits, financial and retirement
planning and life insurance. “Orion and his team help to ensure the future financial
security of his clients through collaborative analysis of their objectives and current
situations and then custom designs plans that will help them realize their goals. All of
us are dedicated to making Sarasota a better place”.

ROBERT BLALOCKCLIFFORD WALTERSJONATHAN FLEECEMATTHEW WESTERMANANTHONY BARTIROMEBlalock, Walters, Held & Johnson, P.A.
Left to Right: Jonathan Fleece, Anthony Bartirome, Clifford Walters, Matthew Westerman, Robert Blalock
Blalock, Walters, Held & Johnson’s mission is to help clients master the legal intricacies of
business, land use and development, health care, estate planning and wealth preservation while
always following the firm’s mantra of “we make a difference.” Its team of highly-specialized
and dedicated attorneys has built the firm’s longstanding reputation for legal savvy and client
service through an unwavering focus on supporting clients’ interests.
Robert “Bob” Blalock, one of the firm’s principals, has served clients in the Sarasota-Bradenton
community for some 47 years. Honored as one of the few Florida Super Lawyers, Blalock says
specialization is a key to success. “Selecting what we do and doing it well is an advantage for clients
and for us,” he said. Blalock also has made his mark on the community having served in leadership
positions with many civic and charitable organizations including the Manatee Chamber and
Economic Development Council and the Manatee Community Foundation. He played an integral
role in cementing the partnership of the Ringling Museum and Florida State University. “Being
involved in the community helps us be better lawyers,” he says, “because we don’t practice in a vacuum.”
Clifford Walters, principal and practice manager, brings more than just legal know-how to
his clients - he strives to find more solutions than problems by understanding the needs and
goals of all parties. This ability led Walters to mediate a series of disputes between Manatee
County and its cities that resulted in more effective communication and resolution of issues.
The breadth of his capabilities is recognized by his long service on Bealls’ board of directors,
as past chairman of the board of the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee and as an
officer and board member of the Ringling Museum.
As one of only about 100 Florida attorneys certified in healthcare law by the Florida Bar,
Jonathan Fleece wields some formidable credentials whether he is closing a transaction,
working out a partnership or finding solutions to resolve disputes. As a graduate of the nation’s
top law school for health care, Fleece ably represents physicians, dentists, imaging companies,
surgery centers and others. His expertise has been recognized professionally and civically. He
has served as chairman of the Manatee EDC, is on the board of Tidewell Hospice and has been
named to the Florida Bar’s Board Certification Committee for Healthcare.
When it comes to labor and employment law, Matthew Westerman believes an ounce of
prevention is worth much more than a pound of cure. While prepared to defend clients
aggressively in court or with government agencies if there are claims against them, Westerman
also gives them the necessary tools to protect themselves in the future. He believes growing
companies must be particularly proactive and helps them adopt the policies and practices
required as their employment rolls increase. Westerman also is one of the few area attorneys
who help businesses and individuals with immigration and naturalization issues.
Anthony Bartirome’s relationship with clients does not end when the paperwork is done. As an
expert in estate and estate tax planning, ensuring clients’ peace of mind is a priority, and his early
training in psychology helps him discern what clients want to accomplish in terms of their family
relationships. His goal is successful implementation of wills, trusts and other documents designed
to provide for beneficiaries and protect clients if they become incapacitated. As a graduate of Saint
Stephen’s Episcopal School, Bartirome has strong community ties and now serves as a school
trustee. He also is active on the Manatee Community Foundation’s board of directors.
With a 90-year track
record, this law firm
of over 20 attorneys
demonstrates steadfast
commitment to the
Sarasota-Bradenton
community and
proven competencies
in well-defined
specialties. The firm’s
legal veterans possess

ensure businesses,
professionals and
families have the legal
support and protection
they need.

CITY OF NORTH PORTGene Matthews, “Mr. North Port”Dean McConville, Chairman, Vision North PortDr. Lee Gross, Prime Health of North PortDavid Garofalo, City Commission ChairmanBill Werdell, President-Elect, North Port Area Chamber of Commerce
SCENE Magazine | Men On The Scene
Impacted, but far from defeated by the fallout from the collapse of the real estate market,
the City of North Port is proactively creating opportunities to continue building a vibrant
community in which to live and raise a family. From sparking community dialogue to
ensuring local medical care and excellent youth activities, here are five men who have
earned the title of community leader.
As chair of the City Commission, David Garofalo is committed to addressing North
Port’s unique needs. The city’s median age is 38, so economic development is high on
his list. Garofalo fought for a seat on the county Tourism Development Council and is
hoping to attract tourism dollars. With Warm Mineral Springs, a proposed water park
and a completed hotel feasibility study, he is confident the right steps are being taken.
“The majority of our people are working class families, and we want to create work here,”
he said. ‘I’m excited about the future in North Port.”
When Dr. Lee Gross began his practice in 2003, he was one of only eight doctors in the
city. After a judge overturned North Port’s certificate of need for a hospital, he took up the
fight to create a 24-hour medical facility. Then, when Sarasota Memorial Hospital began
showing interest in the area, he worked with it on what eventually became the city’s first
free standing emergency care facility. “All this has brought a lot of new doctors to the
community and spurred a lot of excitement,” he said. “I’m glad to be a part of it.”
A resident since 1972, Gene Matthews has earned the moniker, “Mr. North Port.” In a
fledgling city, Matthews was instrumental in helping organize Little League Baseball and
competitive youth swimming. Today, the Gene Matthews Boys & Girls Club is a testament
to his work on behalf of children. A former member of the school board and county
commission and one of the original members of the Gulf Coast Community Foundation,
Matthews is humble about his achievements. “I figured that my main role was to be an
advocate for the city and the kids,” he said. “I try to build bridges.”
A native Floridian who spent many years up North, Dean McConville saw North Port
as a great place to start a business with State Farm Insurance and raise his five children.
As chairman of Vision North Port, he helps ensure residents’ opinions and ideas about
the city are heard. The monthly open dialogue sessions have given birth to the city’s
Ambassador Program and the State College of Florida Workforce Development Initiative.
“It’s wonderful to be at the beginning of creating our future,” he said. “It gives people the
opportunity to make a difference instead of sitting on the sidelines.”
Giving businesses a chance to grow is how Bill Werdell of Calusa National Bank shows his
dedication to the community. As an instrumental force behind the city’s Small Business
Revolving Loan Program, Werdell is using his expertise to make it a reality and bring
needed funding to existing and new businesses. His extensive volunteer activities include
being president-elect of the Chamber and a board member of the Rotary, high school
Athletic Boosters Club and the North Port Contractors Association. “I feel I make a
difference by volunteering,” he said. “Anything I do that helps those organizations helps
us be a better community.”
Proud and determined to
shape a satisfying lifestyle
for its residents, the City
of North Port has relied
on those willing to step up
and make a difference.
Their efforts are laying
the foundation for a
bright future.

SCENE Magazine | Men On The Scene
Proving that there is strength in numbers, local contemporary artists have banded together
to shine a spotlight on their genre. Working under the umbrella, S/ART/Q, a play on the
airport’s three-letter code SRQ, these creatives are taking an activist role in supporting
artists, promoting their work, engaging the community and, they hope, even helping the
local economy. “Our mission is to bring contemporary art to the Sarasota community
through exhibits and outreach to the community that create exciting opportunities for
people to engage with higher quality contemporary art,” says Jeff Schwartz, an S/ART/Q
board member and the group’s secretary/treasurer, who also teaches first year core courses
at the Ringling College of Art & Design.
Formed less than two years ago, the nonprofit group has collaborated on several major
exhibits of members’ work, including the bold PROCESS exhibition at G.Wiz—The Science
Museum this spring. “Each artist has displayed part of his or her creative process as well
as finished pieces to show how the process starts and how it is finished in its final form,”
Schwartz said. The group was formed in late 2009 by Joseph Arnegger and Tim Jaeger and
now numbers 14 including Schwartz. Other artists are Tobey Albright, James Evans, Brian
Haverlock, Brandon Maupin, Daniel Miller, Ricky Otto, Daniel Perales, Sabrina Small,
Tom Stephens, David Piurek and Nathan Skiles. Affiliates who support the group’s mission
include Veronica Pastore, Ariana Franco and Beth Noble.
While artists of the group have known each other and worked together for years, Schwartz
says, S/ART/Q offered them their first opportunity to come together and further their
mission as artists. “We are all active professionals in contemporary art and many of us are
graduates of Ringling,” Schwartz said. “We are trying to create unique opportunities for
artists and exhibits of our work at a certain level of quality. Unfortunately, many of the
contemporary art galleries in Sarasota have closed.”
Because the group is founded and run by artists, its activities are rooted in the creative process.
“We all have a similar vision of what we want to see happen,” Schwartz says. “We get along well
as a group and respect each other. S/ART/Q has made opportunities that were not available to
us before. We found that together we have a much stronger voice than as individuals.”
Describing the group as committed, forward-thinking and passionate, he adds that they
are in the process of becoming a 501(c)3 nonprofit and have a vision of the future that
includes a permanent home base, the ability to do larger scale exhibits, live/work spaces
similar to Bradenton’s Village of the Arts, employees to concentrate full time on the
group’s mission and maybe even healthcare for members. “The passion comes from each
of us in our own practice,” he said. “We’re all very serious about making good quality
artwork and getting peoples’ eyes on it.”
S/ART/Q’s vision also includes the ability to make a positive impact on the region. “Our goal is
to produce a high level of art and to be the place to go to see and support contemporary art
in Sarasota,” Schwartz says. “We’re committed to the greater Sarasota community in many
ways, including helping bring people to the community because of what we do. There are
many great things that draw people here, and we want to be a part of that.”
A dedicated group of
passionate artists have
joined forces to champion
contemporary art in
Sarasota. S/ART/Q’s
band of brothers (and
sisters) is dedicated to
forging ties and earning
the community’s support
in their quest for a
permanent home to create
and display their art.

PETER WOZNIAKCEO, Venice Regional Medical Center
SCENE Magazine | Men On The Scene
When Peter Wozniak took the helm as CEO of Venice Regional Medical Center in January
2010, it was on its way to being named one of the 100 Top Hospitals in the nation. The
mission he chose to accept was to lead the effort to build upon that sterling reputation by
expanding needed services and geographic footprint.
To accomplish that, Wozniak is focusing on the community’s needs and enlisting the
support of physicians and staff to retain Venice Regional’s warm and welcoming
atmosphere while staying at the leading edge of advancing medical practice. With a
background rooted in clinical practice as a registered nurse and a personable walk-the-talk
style that encourages dialogue and sharing ideas, he brings the right set of skills to the task.
Deeply committed to quality patient care, he said one of the things that sold him on
taking the CEO position was the commitment and involvement of physicians. “When
I interviewed here what caught my attention was such an engaged medical staff and
how focused they are on the success of their hospital,” Wozniak said. “Ten physicians
interviewed me, and that told me they care about the hospital and the care they give
patients.” He sees his role as one of empowering physicians and staff to deliver the best
health care possible. “I lead from a supportive approach. Although I have plenty of ideas,
I know I’ve got to listen to people,” Wozniak said. “My role is to make sure they have what
is necessary to make their jobs easier and better meet patients’ needs.”
His patient- and staff-directed focus stems from Wozniak’s early work as a nurse on the
oncology ward of a large Detroit hospital. “I really got to know my patients and their families.
Almost everyone on that floor had a devastating diagnosis and you had to get them to focus on
anything but their cancer” he said. “I’m a glass-half-full guy, and I tried to get them to focus
on the positive. That experience has helped me to be patient and listen to people.”
His servant leadership mode also extends to the community. Citing Venice Regional’s new
specialist and emergency care clinic in North Port, he said it is an example of hearing what the
community was saying loud and clear. “The clinic was a response to the North Port community,
and shows we have the ability to stretch geographically to secondary markets,” Wozniak said.
Likewise, investments in advanced cardiac procedures and technology and the hospital’s
highly-ranked emergency room will remain important areas for expansion. “You really
have to know the community very well to see what they need from your hospital,” he said.
“With our average age in the 70s, there is a huge cardiovascular need in the area and we
will continue to grow in that service line. We look to our physicians and staff, and they tell
us exactly what we need in terms of new equipment and procedures.”
Wozniak also credits Venice Regional’s parent company, Health Management™Associates,
for helping build the hospital’s reputation by listening to the community and following
through on its commitments. He believes that connection has spurred an extraordinary
level of community connection. “We have 700 volunteers in the hospital. I never have
been in a hospital with that many,” he said. “When you have that number of volunteers, it
shows a strong partnership with the community.”

the Pirate City minor league complex,

Following a successful career building
business for a large corporation and
applying those skills to turn around failing
businesses, Gregg Anderson thought it was
time to retire. That lasted three months. The
dynamic Anderson decided he preferred
to use the skills he honed over 35 years
of helping businesses grow. In 2008, he
purchased a digital printing company and
expanded its offerings. Today, Digital Image
Business Solutions is a revenue-generating
marketing firm for its clients. “What that
means is we help our clients establish a
marketing budget and implement custom
solutions that generate revenue,” Anderson
said. “We take an analytical approach
to identify the best sales and marketing
strategy and what the return on investment
will be for that strategy.” The firm capitalizes
on technology when developing marketing
strategies for a client’s individual customer
base allowing them to concentrate on
specific company, customer and product
demographics. “When working with
companies in distress, we don’t have the
revenue to test advertising strategies to
discover what worked,” he says. “We know
how to combine the marketing and media
tools with analytical and creative strategies
that result in increased sales and higher ROI.”
Anderson knew what he learned could
help companies that were not in financial
trouble, but he did not know in 2008 that
the bottom would fall out of the economy.
Using his turnaround expertise, he
accelerated his original three-year plan
and, less than three years later, the firm
has enjoyed enough success that he is
considering expansion into other markets.
Using his expertise in sales and turning around failing
businesses, this marketing communications executive uses
technology and traditional marketing tools to develop
strategies that drive sales for clients. This focus on marketing
ROI has helped his business flourish in tough times.

ERIC BAIRDPresident & CEO, MyUS.com
Tiring of life as a successful options trader
on the American Stock Exchange some 14
years ago, Eric Baird wanted to start his
own business.
As part of an entrepreneurial family, it’s no
surprise that the spark that ignited what was
to become MyUS.com was lit around the
family table. His mother, Gail Baird, who
lives in Sarasota, created several businesses
to provide U.S. companies a way to market
overseas. “People wanted her to send them
things they could not get in their own
country, so I began offering them a U.S.
mailing address,” Baird said, “It wasn’t long
before people began buying products.”
The business has boomed with 50 percent
yearly growth rates since 1997. Today,
MyUS.com employs 65 people and handles
package forwarding of primarily upscale
consumer goods, electronics, collectibles and
auto parts for affluent customers overseas.
Although running a business that is
growing exponentially takes time, Baird has
made some strategic hires that allow him to
focus on his other passion, his six-year-old
daughter. “The best part of our business is
that I can go pick up my daughter whenever
I want,” he says. Baird also loves travel and
sports. He plays basketball three nights
a week. “I try to keep a real good balance
between work and life.”
Baird credits the work ethic and drive he
learned from his mother for his success.
“If they put on my tombstone that I was
a very good father and a doting son,” he
quips, “then I could die happy.”
With a cool head for business and a warm heart for
family, this entrepreneur excels at living life to the
fullest. He remains committed to growing his multi-
million dollar business while keeping his life balanced
with family and fun.
In the 12 years since he began his sales
career, Dave Beachy has established a
successful real estate business through

SENATOR MICHAEL BENNETTThe Florida Senate, District 21
Even though he’s not enamored of politics,
Sen. Mike Bennett embraces his role in
helping create a positive future for Florida,
and the successes he’s achieved keep him
in the game.
After a notable career in real estate investing
and multiple small businesses, Bennett
decided to enter politics in 2002. “I saw
the government putting up roadblocks to
business and felt I could make a difference,”
he said. “For the past eight years, we’ve
consistently been able to lower the rate for
workers compensation and reduce govern-
ment waste. We’ve also been able to make
significant improvements in education.”
Among his many passions is an intense
desire to see Florida develop a strong
energy policy and encourage development
of alternative energy systems to reduce
dependence on foreign oil. “One of my biggest
disappointments is that we have not done this,
but it’s not over yet,” he says. In recognition of
his work, the Council for Sustainable Florida
made Bennett the first legislator to receive
its Leadership Best Practice Award.
“My wife, Dee, and I didn’t have kids,
and at the end of the day, I’d like to leave
something behind whether that’s a better
education for our children or a cleaner
environment,” he says. Bennett credits
Dee with setting him on the right path in
life and considers their 44-year marriage
his greatest accomplishment. Brushing
aside his own considerable public service,
he praises her work at local food banks and
soup kitchens. “When I look at what she
does,” he says, “everything I do is tiny.”
Straight-talking Florida State Senator doesn’t mince words
when it comes to his passion for eliminating government
interference and stamping out waste. He takes his
stewardship of Florida’s future seriously through efforts
to improve education and pursue sustainable energy.

ARTHUR M. GUILFORD, PH.D. Regional Chancellor University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee
When Dr. Arthur Guilford came to town
four years ago, his mission — and intention
— was to find the right candidate to lead
the University of South Florida’s Sarasota-
Manatee campus. As it turned out, he was the
right candidate. “When I came here, I had
no idea that USF Sarasota-Manatee was as
comprehensive as it is and how phenomenal
the faculty is,” he said. “Students can
complete their degree program right here.”
While impressed, Dr. Guilford envisioned
serving the community and students even
better. Under his leadership, the campus
is pursuing independent accreditation
although it is fully accredited through
Tampa. “Independent accreditation gives
us more autonomy to respond to the
community’s needs,” he said. “We can alter
the curriculum more easily if a certain
degree program is critical.”
Dr. Guilford also has overseen the growth
of the acclaimed Perlman Music Program,
which offers free concerts and recitals. “It’s
our gift to the community,” he said. Given
the scope of his responsibilities, his extensive
community involvement is remarkable.
He serves on the boards of SunTrust Bank,
the Junior League of Sarasota, SunCoast
Workforce, the Manatee and Sarasota
Chambers and as President of The Glasser/
Schoenbaum Human Services Center.
Dr. Guilford also values time with his wife of
40 years, two children and six grandchildren,

magazine named him a Best Boss for 2010.
USF regional chancellor is diligently establishing the
Sarasota-Manatee campus as a local academic powerhouse
and community gem. He is just as meticulously making
his own mark outside academia by sharing his leadership
prowess on numerous business, civic & nonprofit boards.
Trading the rolling-hilled beauty of
Northeast Ohio for Sarasota’s sun and surf
two years ago, attorney Michael Harshman
looked for a new endeavor that would
allow him to connect with the community.
“A lot of people come here to retire, and I
decided not to do that,” Harshman said.
“I think it is easier to become part of the
community if you are actively engaged in
providing some service.”
His 40 years as a litigator, combined with
his wife Ruth’s experience as a psychologist
and a very hands-on small-town mayor,
seemed exactly the right blend of talent
to create a mediation business. The couple
founded Impact Mediation this past year.
“We’ve spent a good part of the past
two years taking courses and observing
mediations to get certified by the Florida
Supreme Court,” Harshman said. “In Florida
you don’t have to be certified to do mediation,
but we wanted that added credential.”
Given his extensive experience with the
law and in court, and his wife’s background
as a psychologist and politician, which
included responsibility for a mayor’s
court, he believes they have a powerful
combination of experience to offer.
But work is not everything. Harshman
said he and his wife also enjoy attending
fundraisers, meeting people and staying
fit. “One of the things about living in
Southwest Florida is that I can stay active
with tennis and biking 12 months of the
year,” he said. “At my age, biking is a
wonderful way to stay in shape, and I bike
every day. We really do like it here.”
Drawn to the area by Sarasota’s many charms, a
veteran attorney is transforming his long experience in
handling disputes into a second career helping people
mediate disagreements to avoid a clash in court.

From the initial 45-minute consultation
and an hour-long pre-surgery appointment
to a post-visit questionnaire, Dr. Robert
Hillstrom is committed to listening
carefully to his patients and educating them
about realistic goals and expectations. The
whole idea of the “lifestyle” or “lunchtime”
lift directly contradicts what he has learned
from over 20 years of experience. “To do
things right takes time, and we take the
time to do things right,” said Hillstrom who
has been named one of the Best Doctors in
America since 1994. “As a result, we have
a track record of happy patients and good
outcomes.” His colleague in the practice, Dr.
Andrew Burchard, agrees. “We do everything
we can to educate the patient,” Burchard said.
“It’s about enhancing your personal beauty,
not making you a different person.”
Both doctors stress the importance
of creating a natural look. Burchard
emphasizes the necessity of maintaining
proper facial proportion and avoiding that
“done” look. “Our work is not to create a
new person,” says Hillstrom. “Our goal
is to make someone look better and feel
better about themselves. Honesty and
integrity are huge in our field and we
always put patients first.”
Hillstrom and Burchard also believe that
hospital and community service are a
direct extension of their personal lives. In
partnership with HOPE Family Services,
they have used their considerable skills
and compassion to aid domestic violence
victims. “Giving back to the community and
to those less fortunate only seems natural.”

Along with practicing law for 19 years,
Hines also connected with the business

perspective than just as a lawyer. I know
what litigation does to people,” he said. “I
try to help clients get to resolution and get
on with their lives or businesses.”
Hines also assists people who have problems
with estate or trust administration. “A
personal representative may not get a long

they are not being adequately represented
by the trustee,” he said. “That can destroy
families. I try to take personalities out of it
and solve the problem quickly and fairly.”
With three children in area schools and
sports, Hines spends considerable time

athletics. He also is very active in the

were more than a bit skeptical. Having
sold a successful international computer

seemed perfect despite his friends’ qualms.
“Everyone told me I was crazy and that

come to Sarasota.”
Using his substantial Internet savvy,
Hirschman launched his new career less

paid off. Hirschman has sold more than $14
million in real estate in that short time.
His secret? “I love working with clients,

That’s the key to my success” he said. “I
pride myself in knowing the history of
our area and showing people areas like
Burns Court and Towles Court. When you
add that to the beach and emphasize the
culture, I’m really selling Sarasota.”
It’s an easy sale given his own enthusiasm
for the area, which allows him to indulge
his zeal for sports, especially tennis; a
passion he shares with his two talented
sons. “I’m so passionate about my job, my

project we can’t perform on our clients’
behalf, from changing a doorknob to
building a $50 million dollar health care

Holland, founded in 1907 in Pennsylvania,

Because of that experience, Holland is able

Michael Jones has always had a passion
for helping people and his career reflects
the sense of purpose he gets from serving
others. As a Certified Financial Planner®,
his work helped clients retire comfortably,
and when he moved to Florida 10 years ago
to be closer to his aging parents, he found
another way he could help.
“I’ve always searched for ways to make
a difference, and I saw a huge need for
seniors to be able to stay independent
in their own homes,” Jones said. “I love
consulting with our clients and their
families on how to best care for a loved
one. We provide comforting solutions that
bring peace of mind.”
In the 10 years since Jones and his wife,
who is a nurse, opened his first Comfort
Keepers office, the business has served
thousands of seniors and expanded to
three offices. “Our success stems from
our very selective hiring process. It is not
easy to get a job with us. We hire only the
cream of the crop,” he says. “After all, we
are responsible for our clients’ care, safety

meshes with U.S. Trust’s emphasis on wealth management solutions versus a product-based
approach. This ensures everyone has a plan based upon their unique situation along with the

“What makes us unique is that we do function as a team. In my 25 years in this business I’ve
never had the opportunity to work in a team environment like this, which is so focused on
doing the right thing for the client every time,” he said. “It’s this internal team power that

When Dave Lowell of Ram Marine Services got into the business 10 years ago, he wanted
to make a positive impact in an industry where an environmentally-conscious marine
contractor was an oxymoron. Working along sensitive shorelines building docks, boatlifts
and sea walls as well as shoreline hardening, dredging and navigational marker work, Lowell
looked for ways to do it better. “I really try to minimize our impact by going beyond standard
best management practices,” he said. “We work in sensitive areas whether it is mangroves,
seagrasses, manatees or water quality. We keep our construction sites very clean and when
we finish, they are as good as or better than when we started.” As a testament to those efforts,
his principles were adopted as a model for the marine construction industry by the Florida

restaurants in one of the nation’s most challenging markets paid off for him here.
Nineteen years operating Sarasota’s Café Baci says he’s been doing things right. “We do everything
fresh,” he said proudly. “We make our own pasta, stocks and sauces. We even go to the extent of
filtering our cooking water. Michael added, “It’s the attention to detail that differentiates us.”
What also sets Roberto Mei apart is his leadership at the restaurant and in the community. He

TOM O’BRIENPresident, O’Brien Family Farms
A second generation farmer, Tom O’Brien is concerned about the future of American family
farms, and he’s doing something about it. O’Brien Family Farms is run by a bevy of family
working seven days a week to supply locally-grown cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes, eggplant,
squash, beans, corn, melons and strawberries to area residents.
Now, a newly-constructed farm stand and educational center is scheduled to open by Thanksgiving.
“We are trying to maintain the heritage of American family farming, which is getting tougher
to do,” O’Brien says. “We want to educate children and families about the importance of our
country being able to feed itself and also about good nutrition.” The new farm stand will carry
90% local produce grown on the O’Brien Family Farms where customers can pick their own or
buy in bulk. O’Brien anticipates hosting busloads of school children, teaching them where their
food comes from and, with glass hives, truly showing them the secret lives of bees and explaining
their vital role in pollination. “It’s rewarding to see kids leaving with red mouths from eating
strawberries,” he says. “We want to help parents better explain the benefits and great taste of
fruits and vegetables over a candy bar. If we can change that mindset, we’ll be much better off.”

For Mike Pender, CPA, PFS, CFE, CFF, (right) and Steve Spangler, CPA, (left) building Cavanaugh &
Co. as one of the area’s top accounting firms was not enough, so they’ve focused their considerable
talents toward promoting excellence in their profession and helping the community. The two CPAs
credit their success to adhering to the company motto: Our clients are like family to us. “We pay
attention to our clients and give them very personal service,” said Pender, who focuses on taxes. “It
takes confidence and trust, which is built through a professional relationship over time. We get to
know everything we can about our clients and provide the service to meet those needs.”
Cavanaugh & Co. helps individuals, businesses, nonprofits and associations with tax, auditing
and accounting services. “The key is listening to our clients and understanding what’s going
on,” says Spangler, who specializes in condominium and homeowner association accounting,
nonprofit auditing and retirement planning for high-income individuals. “We try to lower
taxes. A lot of people don’t know they can lower taxes on their current income.”
Both men actively carry on the firm’s tradition of community service. Spangler has served with the
Sarasota Kiwanis Club, Boys and Girls Club of Venice and the Venice Area Chamber of Commerce.
Renowned for his devotion to worthy causes, Pender also has a host of credentials and is active

ERIC PETERSVice President & Market Manager, First Federal Bank of Florida
Give Eric Peters a challenge, and you
set in motion a human dynamo with his
eye on the prize. In this case, the prize
is someone who could benefit from the
services of a new player in the area’s
banking business.
Peters, who joined First Federal Bank of
Florida this year as its vice president and
market manager, is psyched about helping
build the business from the ground up
after a similar achievement for Bank of
America’s wealth management group. “At
Bank of America, I built the business from
zero to $300 million,” he said. “I hope to
build another powerhouse at First Federal
by being a mentor and a sales leader. I
teach employees to talk to people and find
out what their needs are.”
Peters takes pride when his former clients
seek him out. “People are finding me by
word of mouth, which is very rewarding,”
he said, proving that if you treat people
right by serving their needs, success will
follow for both parties.
Also rewarding are the many hours
Peters has donated to Junior Achievement
teaching third graders business
fundamentals over the past 19 years. His
dedicated volunteerism earned him the
Teacher of the Year Award for Florida’s
West Coast. In his free time, he bikes
up to 100 miles every weekend using the
downtime to come up with innovative
solutions – an extra effort his former
clients appreciated. “What it comes down
to,” he says, “is that I want to be your
banker for life.”
With a long and successful track record, an experienced wealth management professional tackles a new challenge to build banking business in a highly competitive market. Relationships nurtured over the years are key to his business success and his personal fulfillment.
Helping to bring other people’s dreams

build Gary Pike’s Point West Designs into
a successful business, it has helped the
design consultant stay inspired.
Specializing in mid- to higher-end
projects, Pike’s work includes traditional
consulting on colors, surfaces, fabrics and
accessories, and he welcomes the ability
to take on projects that involve significant
renovation as well. He has worked a variety
of Sarasota’s premier residences, including
the Ritz-Carlton, the Oaks Country Club
and many waterfront properties. “I only
take a few clients a year because when I
take on a project, I am committed to them
to the end,” Pike says. “Most of my clients
become friends. It’s a relationship, and
that’s how I approach it.”
Pike emphasizes that he designs specifically
to his clients’ tastes rather than imposing
his ideas on them. “I listen to what people
want and mold my ideas to their taste,”
he says. “In the end, they are going to be
comfortable living in it.” He also works
hard to handle the organizational details,
communication and cost control required
in effective project management.
Having just returned from Finland, Pike likes
to indulge his wanderlust to discover New
York and the rest of the world. “I regularly
spend time in New York visiting galleries,
museums and showrooms for inspiration.
I am always guaranteed to return home
with new ideas for my clients” Pike said.
“However, I love coming home to Sarasota.
There is nowhere I would rather live.”
Design consultant brings a unique combination of
artistry, creativity and project management capabilities
to his clients’ renovation and decorating endeavors. He
also loves to travel and discover the world but equally
loves being able to call Sarasota his home.

Donald Schaefer’s quest for knowledge and
thirst for information have earned him
select status among his peers and the trust

the designation PIM Portfolio Manager, a
designation held by only a select group of
Financial Advisors at Wells Fargo Advisors,

distinguishes me at the firm. Typically a
financial advisor only develops the investment
plan, but the investments are actually managed
by someone else, such as a mutual fund,”
Schaefer said. “In my case I not only provide
the investment plan, I also perform the daily
investment buy-and-sell decisions.”
Schaefer’s added responsibilities require a
significant amount of research and dedication
beyond a typical advisor. He recently was
one of only 25 Wells Fargo advisors invited
to participate with an advanced portfolio
construction and management team at
Stanford University’s School of Business.
“Personally, I’m just voracious about

where Turner Tree and Landscape was
born. “Today we are a residential and

everything from small residential jobs to
commercial projects of $3.6 million as well
as signage, walls, lighting and fountains,”
he said. In homage to the economic slump,
Turner has been creative in giving value

says his associates specialize in the full range
of commercial banking services, but leave
non-banking financial services to other
experts. “If you need one, we will refer you to
a financial planner or other professional,” he

ANDREW WALKERPresident & CEO, New College Foundation
The sheer breadth of Andrew Walker’s
intellectual interests seems made to order
for New College whose ability to juxtapose
rigorous academics with no grading
system has produced a steady stream
of high-achieving graduates. Walker’s
career spans private industry, government
and nonprofit work with The Nature
Conservancy, renowned for its work to
preserve habitat. As an undergraduate, his
studies encompassed physics and English
literature, two seemingly divergent
pursuits. “Both are ways of trying to
understand how the world works. I find
them to be very compatible,” says Walker.
New College, too, has a knack for spanning
diverse interests, earning kudos from the
fiercely-liberal Mother Jones magazine
to the conservative Wall Street Journal.
The former named it one of the 10 coolest
schools in the country while the Journal
ranked it second for its ability to matriculate
students into elite graduate programs.
Ensuring New College continues to earn
such tributes is the impetus behind a multi-
year, multi-million dollar fundraising
campaign that launches in February 2011
in conjunction with its 50th anniversary.
“We want to assure its ascendancy as one
of the top colleges in the country for the
next 25 years,” Walker says. “Because there
are so many great schools here, people
don’t realize how important this school

Although he didn’t know it at the time,
when 14-year-old Dave Whalen filled
in for a hapless dishwasher who walked
out after a temperamental chef threw a
cleaver at him, it was his first step on a
very successful career path. “He walked
out, and there were thousands of people
to serve,” Whalen said. “I worked until 3
a.m.” That experience led to a degree in
hotel and restaurant administration from
Florida State University and experience at
renowned clubs like the Governor’s Club
in Tallahassee and the Palm Beach Polo
Club, which ultimately brought him to
Laurel Oak Country Club.
Whalen came at a challenging time with
renovations underway to the clubhouse
and completion of the west golf course, not
to mention the economy. A little TLC and
leadership were needed to bring members
together, he said. Tackling the fallout from
the economy head-on, Whalen right-sized

resulting in today’s strong balance sheet.
“We are adding members and meeting
our financial goals, which is helping us to
excel,” Whalen said. “New programs are

as a specialty. “I really enjoyed caring
for individuals at a significant time in
their lives,” he said. “When you deliver

important things you’ll ever do for them.”
Today, Yenari practices general gynecology,
specializing in pelvic floor reconstruction
and urinary incontinence. He also dem-
onstrates consummate skill in laparoscopic
surgery, but the desire for personal
connection remains. “My staff and I know
all of our patients by name,” he said, “and I
take pride in calling nearly all my patients
back with their test results myself.”
As the father of two young girls, however,
it’s family that provides the greatest
satisfaction. “For me, family does come
first whether it’s my wife or our kids,”
Yenari said. “If I had to give up my job
or my hobbies for them, I would do it in
