The COS Gala honoring our Cantor Allan Robuck
is fast approaching!
Sunday, February 21, 2016 is the da te. We will
be having an exciting silent auction, a fantastic
dinner and entertainment unlike any that Ohev has
ever seen before. Please make yourself a part of this
big event by becoming a sponsor, securing an item
for our auction, or simply making plans to a%end
with your friends. This annual event not only gives
us the opportunity to show our appreciation to
Cantor Robuck for 25 years of service to our
congregation, but is also vital to the successful
operation of the synagogue’s many wonderful
programs and services. If you have an auction item,

COS GALA 2016 Co-chairs
Dear Friends,
It would seem as if we have raced from Rosh
Hashanah to the new secular year of 2016! Perhaps it
feels that way because there is always so very much
happening at COS. As we start the New Year that
same fast pace of events continues. Here are just a
few recommendations you might want to add to
your calendar.
Starting in January on Wednesdays (6th, 13th, 20th, 27th), at noon, I
will be teaching a new adult education class, The Woman Who Defied
Kings, the true life story of one of the most remarkable women in all of
Jewish history, Dona Gracia Nasi. She was a woman of unusual power,
wealth and influence who saved thousands of her fellow conversos
from the horrors of the Inquisition. Truly one of the great heroes of our
people.
On Sunday, Jan. 24th, I would strongly recommend that you plan on
watching at COS the beautiful film Beneath the Helmet. The movie
documents the first-hand accounts of five young Israeli High School
graduates who are new recruits into the Israeli Defense Forces. It is
being sponsored by our COS Israel Advocacy Commi:ee and I know
you will be deeply moved in hearing their stories as they willingly put
their lives on the line to protect their families and homeland.
I also would not miss the 2016 Harriet Ginsburg Woman of Choices
event this year when our own Barbara Chasnov of COS will be the
honoree of our Jewish Federation of Greater Orlando. Choices this year
will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 9th, at 6 pm at COS. Barbara is such a
treasure to our community and our synagogue!
And, then, of course, you should all be on hand for the Cantorial
Serenade Gala, on Sunday Feb. 21st, at which time we will celebrate the
special anniversary of our beloved Cantor, Allan Robuck, and pay
tribute to his many years of service, song, and humor. To say that we
are, and have been, so blessed to have the best cantor in the world at
COS would be no exaggeration!
Yes, “the beat goes on” at COS these next two months but with very
exciting and touching programs that you will not want to miss!
Fondly,
Aaron

Dear Friends,
I love bumper stickers. I go the
the restaurant “Tijuana Flats” just
so i can glance at their humorous
display of stickers. One of my
favorites is the one that says
“Women Make Great Leaders.
You Are Following One Now”. The reason I like it
so much is that my mother-in-law used to have it
on her car. She was exactly like the bumper sticker
- a great leader.
We live in a bumper sticker time. We send
instagrams and get email alerts on our phones. We
watch headline news on-line so that it doesn’t take
too long. Newspapers are disappearing, partly
because no one wants to read below the fold. Now
I get the Sentinel on-line so I can quickly scan what
is interesting to me. The reality of bumper stickers
is that they are not only folk sayings but often
carry a great deal of truth, even if it is couched in
humor. Two of my favorites are: “change is
inevitable, except from a vending machine” and
“what if the hokey pokey is what it’s all about”?
Our Rabbis of our tradition didn’t have bumper
stickers, but there are several great lines that
would have been great on a bumper. The Torah
teaches us that “justice, justice shall you pursue”.
This could have a double entendre. It could be a
directive to live justly or it could mean you are
driving behind a judge. Imagine how the phrase
“do not put a stumbling block before the blind”
would look on a car. I would have to think twice
after seeing that on the car in front of me, and even
more concerning if it was the car behind me.
One of the things that I enjoy
about being President, believe it
or not, is going to meetings of
various commi:ees so that I can
get a be:er understanding of all
aspects of Ohev. I find it very
interesting to sit in and listen to
how our commi:ees work. I want to mention two
of them in my article this month.
One commi:ee meeting I went to recently was for
Ma’asim Tovim. To be honest with you, after
being a member of Ohev for 25 years, I really had
no idea how much of a huge production Ma’asim
Tovim is. It is an incredible coordination of effort
from our volunteers who have tirelessly been
working on Ma’asim Tovim for years.
In working with the changes we are trying to make
with our Board training, we are trying to get all of
our commi:ees to put down what they do in
writing. So, the commi:ee got together one
evening last month so that we could put into
writing everything that happens monthly from
start to finish to feed the homeless. Wow! Every
month this commi:ee has people who gather the
donations of food from the Food Bank or grocery
stores, call people to cook, spend hours on a
Sunday morning preparing the food, warm it up
on Monday, transport it all to the Homeless
Shelter, and finally serve the food on Monday
night. The people who cook and serve vary month
to month, but the gatherers, lead cooks,
coordinators, warmers, and transporters are the
same every month. They spend hours every
month making this wonderful miGvah of feeding
the homeless happen! It’s a coordinated effort of

RABBI DAVID KAY’S MESSAGE
Haveirim Y’karim –
Dear Friends –
On Yom Kippur, I asked
everyone to find one thing that
would enhance their spiritual
life in the year to come – and
then do it. We call this project “Davar Echad” –
Hebrew for “one thing”. It even has its own
Facebook page: h:p://facebook.com/DvarEchad.
Over 150 people have “liked” the Facebook page,
and many have posted their davar echad – from
pledges to be more a:entive in listening to others,
to commitments for weekly Torah study, and
everything in between.
If you haven’t had the chance to think about your
own davar echad , why not do it now? And if you
have commi:ed to a davar echad, why not consider
another one? Either way, the path to spiritual
development happens one step at a time.
One simple and easy davar echad is to drop by the
Orlando Community Weekday Minyan. It meets
Monday through Friday at 7:45 AM in the second
floor Beit K’nesset (chapel) of the Jewish Academy
of Orlando. Whether you commit to once a week,
once a month, or a few times a year, it can make
all the difference for you and your community.
The Orlando Community Weekday Minyan has
been quietly meeting the needs of Jews in central
Florida for over 10 years now. It’s the only
regularly-scheduled weekday minyan in the area –
and it’s both traditional and fully egalitarian. If
enough people made the commitment of coming
just one morning a month, we could guarantee a
minyan every day. Jewish communities much
larger than ours can’t make that claim. You can
find Orlando Community Weekday Minyan
on Facebook, too (h:p://facebook.com/
OrlandoMinyan).
Another davar echad is to join the Ohev Shalom
Social Action Commiee. Our Social Action
Commi:ee oversees several vital community
programs: Ma’asim Tovim, which cooks and
serves a meal once a month for the Coalition for
the Homeless; Bikkur Cholim, which visits
congregants in the hospital; Community Care
Team, which provides rides and other services
for homebound and disabled congregants; and
Shepherd’s Hope, which provides free health
care for the uninsured and underinsured. COS’s
Social Action Commi:ee takes on other projects as
well – and welcomes your ideas. Email
COSSocialAction@gmail.com for more information
or to volunteer (or – you guessed it! – on Facebook
at h:p://facebook.com/COSSocialAction).
Ohev Shalom offers many other opportunities to
add a davar echad to enhance your spiritual life:
services, classes, social and cultural events, youth
programs, Men’s Club, Sisterhood, and more.
Check your “Week at a Glance” email, pick up a
flyer at the synagogue, check our website, follow
us on (here it comes again!) Facebook (h:p://
facebook.com/OhevShalomOrlando), or call the
synagogue office for more information on what’s
coming up.
L’shalom,
David Kay
As I have for the past few issues,
I am going to continue to focus
on the Life and Legacy program
that Congregation Ohev Shalom
is participating in through the
TOP Jewish Foundation.
Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel wrote: “In this
hour we, the living, are the people of Israel. The
tasks, begun by our ancestors and prophets and
continued by their descendants, are now entrusted
to us. We are either the last Jews or those who
hand over the entire past to generations to come.
We will either forfeit or enrich the legacy of ages.”
A legacy fulfills a spiritual ideal. Each one of us
has the power to leave a legacy- one that fulfills
our passions and dreams, and also one that carries
on the legacy of those who came before us. Help us
to ensure a vibrant and vital congregation for to-
morrow. A planned gift continues into posterity
and enables our children’s children to participate
in a positive Jewish life- full of pride in our sacred
traditions.
There are many different ways to provide suste-
nance or resources to ensure the future of Congre-
gation Ohev Shalom. By consulting your financial
advisor, a plan can be designed that will provide
the best advantages for you, while creating signifi-
cant benefits for our synagogue. If you have al-
ready included a legacy gift in your will or estate
plans, THANK YOU! Please notify us so that we
can thank you now and recognize your commit-
ment.
Through the Life and Legacy program, we work
together to secure the necessary resources for our
children’s future. We all strive to leave the world a
be:er place- through our children, our good deeds,
our generosity. With a legacy gift, your impact can
continue beyond your lifetime. While we are ap-
proaching our Centennial, in a hundred years, you
can still be changing lives. This could be the most
important gift you ever make.
I would welcome the chance to discuss the Life
and Legacy program and the options available to
you. Anybody can make a legacy gift, regardless of
age or financial circumstances and your gift can be
customized to fit your goals and needs.
Please call or e-mail me at execdir@ohevshalom.
org. I look forward to discussing the Life and
Legacy program with you. Thank you for consider-
ing a gift to secure the future of Congregation
Ohev Shalom.
Best wishes to each of you and your families for a
Happy and Healthy 2016.
L’Shalom,
Steve

We hope that everyone had a wonderful and
bright Chanukah. Several of us truly enjoyed the
thrill of grating the potatoes and making them into
latkes. Best of all, was topping them off (with apple
sauce and/or sour cream) and eating them
together. Under the tutelage of Lila Tinkoff we
made potato, sweet potato, and zucchini latkes
that were so delicious. Thanks Lila for showing us
how easy and fun it can be.
Regarding our Holiday Raffle, chaired by Cheryl
Wiener, the winners were drawn by COS Gala
Commi:ee members. We are proud to announce
the winners: Gay Harrison, Carol LePov and
Richard HurviG. Proceeds from this year’s raffle
will be used to enhance the COS kitchen. We thank
and appreciate all of you who supported our only
fundraiser.
At our November meeting, the board voted to
subsidize our Youth to help them with
transportation to various conventions. We also
voted to provide our Religious School with 10
I-Pads.
We can only hope that with your continued
support of Sisterhood we will be fortunate enough
to provide the extras for all of the arms of our
fabulous synagogue.
We thoroughly enjoyed seeing the play, “My
Name is Asher Lev” thanks to the efforts
coordinated by Nancy Hecht Faracchio. What an
outstanding play it was. If it ever comes this way
again, don’t miss it!!!!!
In November, Dale Danuff chaired our fun Third
Thursday at Hot Pots in Sanford. All those who
a:ended had a great time creating a fun gift to
give to a special someone for Chanukah or to keep
for themselves.
Recently, our third Thursday was at Farris and

Happy 2016! It is hard to
believe that we are starting the
second half of the program/
school year. If it is anything
like the first part, it will be
busy, exciting and oozing with
Jewish pride and values. Over
the break our teaching staff held the annual staff
retreat. We spent Shabbat together discussing how
we can continue to build a Kehillah Kedosha, a
holy community in our school, youth and family
programs. Judaism is a communal religion and
the best way to teach is by showing what that
looks like. The many programs, activities and
education we offer are designed to create
community. I invite, urge, suggest, request and
hope that you will take part in one of the many
activities so that you can contribute your kedosha/
holiness to our kehilla/community.
We have opened registration for MACHANEH
OHEV 2016 to our members and will open
registration to the community in February. We are
accepting registration for the Family Shabbaton
April 1-3 at Camp Warren Willis, a won’t want to
miss event. Families of all ages who are COS
members or COS Hebrew school families are
welcome. Last year we had 6 couples without
children a:end.
Our youth production of “The Role Model” will
take place March 6 at 2 p.m. and March 9 at 6:45
p.m. The show is about a high school class
making a video for a Jewish cable network about
their Jewish hero. It is wri:en for young people to
perform and it is thoroughly enjoyable. We hope

you will come and enjoy. Sponsorship and ticket
information is forthcoming.
A huge Todah Rabbah to the Hornik Family
Foundation for underwriting the teacher retreat,
the play and the family Shabbaton.
Right now the world is a li:le scarier than perhaps
we would all like and at times feel helpless. We
can’t control what others will do but we must
teach our children and each other that we can’t
stop living. We can find comfort in learning,
playing, celebrating, eating, and praying together
in our Kehilla Kedosha.
I pray that 2016 will bring peace to each of us, our
country, Israel and the entire world.
See you at COS!

It’s hard to believe that we’ve just rung in another
New Year. A very Happy 2016 to all. We are all so
excited for what’s coming soon. It’s our Annual
Mah Jongg Tournament on Sunday, January 10th.
There are only a few days and a few remaining
spots left, so please hurry up and make your
reservation. Lots of good food, prizes, and fun are
in store for you. See the enclosed flyer. You don’t
want to be left out!!!! It’s sure to be a huge success
thanks to the efforts of Lila Tinkoff and Linda

We are looking forward to Sisterhood Shabbat on
Saturday, January 23rd. Our featured guest
speaker is Jill Tomar. Jill is the current Florida
Region President of Women’s League for
Conservative Judaism (WLCJ). I have known her
for many years. She is a very vibrant leader and
will delight everyone. We are so fortunate that she
had time in her busy schedule to come to our Shul.
Lila Tinkoff and Beth Burpee have been working
many months to ensure that everything will run
smoothly. Sisterhood members will be reading
Torah, leading services, and providing a delicious
Kiddush Luncheon. I am so proud of the many
women who have already offered to partake in
services. We encourage everyone in the
congregation to a:end this fabulous service, but
we would love all COS women to be part of this in
the future. Please be sure to wear your Torah
Fund Pin in support of the Jewish Theological
Seminary in New York as well as in support of
WLCJ and Sisterhood Shabbat.
Carol LePov will be helping us to make jewelry
for our Third Thursday, February 18th at 7:00 p.m.
Please check your flyers and Week at a Glance for
our sensational Book Club Chaired by Carolyn
Rosenblum. So far, everyone has been raving
about the books they’ve read and the fascinating
discussions. We thank you Carolyn for all of your
time and effort making this book club a huge
success.
Our nominating commi:ee will soon be hard at
work pu:ing together a fabulous slate of officers
for next year. If you have previously served on the
board and have dropped off for a while; or if you
have never served on our board, we would love to
have you. We want you, no ma:er your age,
young or not so young. Our children desperately
need you to volunteer to ensure them that
Sisterhood will still be here to support their needs.
We also support the needs of the Religious School
as well as the arms of our Shul.
Many thanks go to Robin KoGin and Lori Beim,
Leagram Co-Chairs, for the past five years. They
have spent numerous hours compiling and
mailing out Leagrams. They ask for replacements
as they wish to take on other commi:ees on our
board.
Mardi Shader wants to step down next year as our
Judaica Shop Chairperson. She has served us so
wonderfully for the past 20+ years. Thank you
Mardi for all you do for us and the Shul. Mardi
wishes to train someone soon. Stop by the Judaica
Shop and see how you can help out.
A huge shout out to Barbara Chasnov, who was
selected as the Jewish Federation’s 2016 Harriet
Ginsberg Woman of Choice. We are so very proud
of Barbara and wish you Mazal Tov. The event
will be held here at COS on Tuesday, February 9th.
You won’t want to miss it.
At this time Sisterhood would like to congratulate
our very own Cantor Allan Robuck, honoree for
this year’s Gala on Sunday, February 21st. We are
so proud and fortunate to have you as our Cantor.
We thank you from the bo:om of our hearts and

Shalom and Happy New Year,
We sincerely hope that everyone had a wonderful
and a safe New Year celebration.
The Men’s Club of Ohev Shalom had a very busy
2015. Some of the recent highlights include:
A very successful second Man of the Year/Youth
of the year program held on November 8, 2015. It
was well a:ended by all four temples and
everyone enjoyed the evening. An article and
pictures are being published in the Heritage.
We supported the Chanukah party held at the
temple where over 200 people were served and
over 600 latkes were prepared.
On December 6th, members of the COS Men’s
Club a:ended a regional meeting of the Florida
Region of the Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs
(FJMC) held at Temple Israel. It was a very
informative meeting and many ideas were
exchanged amongst the local clubs. This included
temples from the Florida’s West Coast, the
Jacksonville area, Temple Israel, Beth Am, Beth
Sholom and COS.
We are looking forward to a busy 2016 and we
have many events planned. Further information
will be available through emails, “Week at a
Glance” and Flyers.
On Jan. 13th we will hold our “Recess” gathering
at Ken Davis’ home. Adult refreshments and pizza
will be served. The cost will be $5 per person.
Reservations are requested by January 8th to make
sure there is enough beverages/food for everyone.
If the weather holds, we will sit outside around a
fire pit. We should all thank Ken for doing this.
On January 17th, the Men’s Club will host our
annual NFL Playoff game at 4:00 p.m. at COS. This
has been very successful and enjoyed by all that
a:end. Pizza and beer will be served.
We are again working on our Super Bowl
fundraiser. This has been very successful in the
past and we expect great results again this year.
All the proceeds are used to support our Youth
Programs at COS. Richard SchwarG is taking the
lead on this and again we need to thank Richard
for his hard work and great success.
On Feb 7 we will be having our World Wide Wrap
(WWW). This is a major event for the Federation
of Jewish Men’s Clubs and it is truly a World Wide
event. We are calling this year’s event, BRING
YOUR CHILDREN TO HEBREW SCHOOL and
COME WRAP WITH US. If you are new to
wrapping tefellin and wish to learn, there are
many experienced wrappers available to help.
Everyone is invited.
After the wrap everyone is invited to our
SuperBowl brunch being held that day at
approximately 10:15.
On February 14th, we will sponsor a Sweetheart
brunch, this should be a very interesting first time
event and we will be doing everything in our

This le:er is being wri:en with a very heavy
heart and I hope everyone understands.
For 25 years at OHEV SHALOM I served as
PRESIDENT of THE COS SENIOR GROUP and
over 25 years at my Synagogue in New Jersey I
served as THE SOCIAL DIRECTOR for all Tem-
ple events. All of the above was done as A LA-
BOR OF LOVE and has created a life of Great
Pleasure, Much Happiness and above all TRE-

people I have made happy over all these years.
Now, because of my health declining and with
very much regret, I will not be able to continue as
the president of the group but will stay to the end
of this season, which is June.
I have been asking some of the people that I be-
lieve could take over and have been turned down.
However, I will keep trying to find a replacement
to keep the group going and of course I will be
there to help.

Dear Rabbi –
2016 is a leap year on the secular calendar. Does that
make this Jewish year of 5776 a leap year, too?
-- Counting the Days
Dear CTD –
It just so happens that 2016 and 5776 are both
leap years. But in very different ways, and for
very different reasons.
The earth orbits the sun once every 365.25 days.
Since we can’t count 0.25 day, every four years
we add one day to the month of February to
correct the solar (secular) calendar.
Judaism follows a lunar calendar, counting
months by the observable cycle of the phases of
the moon. Although it takes the moon 27.3 days
to orbit the earth, the earth is also moving around
the sun. This extends the full lunar cycle to 29.5
days (from new moon to new moon), since the
phases of the moon are determined by the
relative positions of the sun, moon, and earth.
Twelve full lunar cycles – one lunar year – add
up to 354 days, 11 days less than a solar year.
After three lunar years, the lunar calendar would
therefore be 33 days – a full month and more –
behind the solar calendar. After eight or nine
lunar years, the lunar calendar would be an
entire season behind the solar calendar. And
that’s the problem for the Jewish calendar.
The Torah requires that the lunar month
containing Passover (called Nisan) be “the first of
all months” in the year (Exodus 12:2), as well as
being the “month of aviv (spring)”. Aviv also has
the specific meaning of barley which has ripened
to full ears but not yet begun to dry (Exodus
9:31). Taken together, this means Passover has to
fall during the lunar cycle in which the spring
barley is ripe. In fact, Passover is also known as
Hag Ha-Aviv (The Festival of Aviv).
If Judaism followed a pure lunar calendar, that
wouldn’t happen. Passover would “slide” back
against the solar calendar 11 days every year, and
be in the wrong season in a ma:er of just a few
years. So instead, every two or three years in a 19
-year pa:ern, an extra month is added
immediately before Nisan, ensuring that this
lunar cycle is always in synch with the full
meaning of aviv as both “spring” and the month
when the barley ripens.
As complicated as that all sounds, there are two
distinct advantages. One is that all Jewish
holidays are celebrated in the same season every
year. The other is that the extra month added in a
leap year is Adar, which contains Purim. Purim is
celebrated in Adar II in a leap year – but the
obligation for joy applies for all of both months!

For those into bike riding, there will be two bike
rides in the month of January, the 3rd and 31st.
Normally the rides occur on the first Sunday of
each month, but since the first Sunday in February
is the 7th, and is busy with other events, we have
moved the February ride to the 5th week in
January.
Hope to see many of you at the upcoming events.
Remember we do this for you and Congregation
Ohev Shalom.

about 30 volunteers each month. A huge Yasher
Koach to the entire coordinated team for handling
this every month.
I would like to say a special thank you to Valerie
Johnson who has been the chair for this commi:ee
for many years. She is stepping down to pursue
other commi:ees. Thank you so much Valerie for
all that you do for Ohev!
The other commi:ee that I would like to mention
is our Seniors group. Month after month, the
Seniors have amazing entertainment. I know that
it is a highlight for many of the Seniors to come
here monthly at 2:00 sharp for their programs. I
have been to several of their events and
thoroughly enjoyed them. The entertainment is
always top notch. I would like to give a huge,
huge thank you to Berny Raff for heading up the
Seniors for 25 years. Unfortunately, due to some
health issues, Berny will be stepping down from
heading up the Seniors. Berny, thank you for all
that you have done for Ohev! You are an amazing
man and you leave some incredibly huge shoes to
fill.
I encourage all of you to look at all of our different
commi:ees and try going to something new
starting in January. We have so much going on
for all different ages and interests. Try something
new! You never know what you might enjoy.
L’Shalom,
Lori
Pirkei Avot is a particularly rich source of bumper
sticker wisdom. We are reminded to”examine the
contents, not the bo:le” and to “pursue (even) a
minor miGvah and flee from transgression”. We
also learn from Ben Azzai “Do not scorn any man,
and do not discount any thing, for there is no one
who has not his hour and no thing that has not its
place”. Of course, the Tanach also is a great
source of bumper sticker wisdom. The prophet
Amos gives us “let justice roll on like a river,
righteousness like a mighty stream”. My favorite
bit of wisdom about religion and its value comes
from Abraham Lincoln who said “I care not for a
man’s religion whose dog and cat are not the
be:er for it”. Maybe this explains why I am
always spouting one-liners. Okay, I’ve gone on
long enough.
