Thinking through material, challenging and experimenting with its potentials and inherent properties, characterizes the

work of this year’s glass and ceramics graduates from the Royal Danish Academy, School of Design Bornholm.

Melting Point is the title of the exhibition, which refers to the common factor when in the process of working with glass and

ceramics. The students have thorough understanding of materials and craft, but also keep an open mind toward the

material’s sensuality as an underlying tool to make an artistic idea come to life.

The world of arts and craft is constantly undergoing change. It is working its way between the realm of design and art, in addition to taking advantage of the concepts from sculptural work. Design and art has its point of departure in materials and craft, experimenting, storytelling and creating form in

three dimension.

The students use their field of work, in glass and ceramics, to ask questions, challenge tradition and to tell stories through materials and form. Works of art with different focuses are

identified in the same category. Serial functional works of crafts, an installation created for a specific environment, or

independent works of art and objects that have a reference to a function, or no functional reference at all.

The graduate projects portray the diversity in the field of arts and craft very well. What ties them all together, is the choice of

materials, aesthetic and artistic awareness and the ability to create form.

Where is the nature? What is the nature? We have begun to spend a lot more time and energy on ways to avoid spoiling and destroying nature. But is nature by definition only the untouched landscapes where all the green and blue is seen or are big cities in reality also part of nature? We no longer see ourselves as natural beings because we destroy and misuse. But aren’t these just natural actions of the human being?

My work is based on a construction technique that allows me to build forms from cut fragments of flat glass. These are then fused together, picked up and finished in the hot shop, to obtain the final version of the object. My inspiration comes from the glass material itself. The history, the characteristics and the aesthetic values of glass, are elements I choose to put forward into my work.

I work within the realms of fantasy, visionary and surreal art.In my work, I strive to open a window to these realms for the spectator, providing impressions that stimulates the observer’s own senses and imaginative fantasy.”A Magical Machinery” is a narrative of my exploration of ”The Land where spirit and matter meet”. They reflect my findings and discoveries in this universe.

My project is a mix of my own personality and manga. The expression is inspired by manga, and the mood, I went for, describes me well, as a person. So it’s a picture of the inside of my head, with a cartoony twist.

In my design I have developed a technique, where I use sharp paper folds which I have transferred into a functional coffee and tea set in porcelain. The set consists of; coffee pots, teapots, milk jugs, sugar bowls, mugs and cups. All parts can be combined as you wish.

disciplineYou know something no one else knows. You are capable of

something special and very unique. You are familiar with the materials and know how to express yourself using these

materials. You have challenged that knowledge and those expressions through the course of many different exam projects.

You understand the world by using your curiosity and testing the flexible boundary of capabilities of the materials. You all have an individual artistic language that now will be tested

in the real world.

A graduation has two sides, one pointing into the future and one into the past. The three year program has come to an end

and the graduates will now disperse. You no longer have to take into consideration what your teacher believes to be the right

thing to do. You are all anticipating what the exhibition might mean for your future career.

You should continue to develop an independent, artistic language using long-term, experimental and in-depth ceramic

and glass projects. Projects based on an understanding of glass and ceramics, using your own independent expression. Do not feel trapped in a narrow frame of mind in consideration to the

world of arts and craft. Rather use the flexible boundaries of this field to broaden your opportunity – throw yourself into

tasks, exhibitions and new constellations for your expression.

Remember your strength – an in-depth understanding of material combined with a strong individual artistic expression. You need to believe that the language and expression you have

constructed for yourself is of great value. Don’t follow the crowd. Do what feels right. And believe in it. Do something.

Just do it – not everything must be understood. Listen to your heart and believe in yourself. This is your discipline.
