HIV/AIDS and their Families

Diarrhea Affects PLWHA & their Families:• Morbidity and mortality in 90% of PLWHA (Katabira 1999,

Monkenmuller & Wilcox 2000)

• Susceptibility of PLWHA contracting diarrhea

• Nutrient absorption

• Absorption of ARVs (Bushen et al, 2004); (= possible ARV resistant strains)

• Burden on caregivers

• Water needs for people with HIV

• More severe in HIV+ children

Importance of WASH and PLWHA:• 30-40% reduction in diarrhea through 3 key WASH practices

(Fewtrell et al 2005, Curtis and Cairncross 2003)- Hand washing with soap- Household water treatment and safe storage- Safe disposal of faeces

• Diarrhea in PLWHA via improved WASH practices

• Protects entire family from diarrhea

Integrate WASH into HIV programs

• Home-based Care• Orphans and Vulnerable Children• Counseling and Testing• Prevention of Maternal to Child Transmission• Nutrition and HIV

Integration Approach

• Review guidance on WASH within HIV policies and guidelines

• Identify country-specific Small Doable Actions to help people improve WASH practices

• Provide tools and training that organizations can use to integrate WASH into HIV programs
