Faculty Hires Dr. Lucia Gauchia Babe was hired as an assistant
professor with a joint appointment in ECE (2/3) and ME-EM (1/3) department and named the Richard and Elizabeth Henes Assistant Professor in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. She earned her PhD in 2009 from the University of
Carlos III of Madrid, Madrid, Spain. From 2012-2013 she was a Post-Doctoral Research associate
at McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. From 2010-2012 she was an assistant professor, University of
Carlos III of Madrid, Spain. Her energy storage systems from the more traditional ones to
smart grids, such as renewable energy, electric & hybrid electric vehicles,

Faculty Honors Dr. Bo Chen was promoted to associate
professor with tenure and named the Dave house Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering
Dr. Seong-Young Lee was promoted to associate professor with tenure
Dr. Desheng (Dennis) Meng was promoted to associate professor with tenure
Dr. John H. Johnson was selected to receive the 2013 ASME Internal Combustion Engine Award

Michael LaCourt will retire on October 10, 2013 after over 35 years of service at Michigan Tech
Paul Kipela will retire on September 28, 2013 after over 36 years of service at Michigan Tech

Student Awards MEEM International Senior Design teams 7 (Reid
Barber, Stephanie Boomgaard, Ben Cottrill, Miriam Paquet, and Kevin Peterson) & 8 (Ruth Fisher, James Hartel, Bobby Pizzey, David Weyland) traveled to India to discuss their progress and receive feedback on their research the week of March 12, 2013. Team 7 met Dr. Anil Jain of the Dr. P.K. Sethi
Rehabilitation and Jaipur Limb Training Center. The advisors for both teams are Dr. Nina Mahmoudian
(assistant professor, ME-EM) and Dr. Mohammad Rastgaar (assitant professor, ME-EM).

Student Awards More than 60 student teams competed in the Michigan
Tech Undergraduate Expo on Thursday, April 18th. Honorable Mention in the Senior Design category went to the ME-EM team for the Lightweight Swing Gate. Members of the team are Thomas Schmidt, Eric Lindholm,
Katherine Schattl, Caleb Carlson, and Andy Wybo, all seniors in Mechanical Engineering.
Their advisor is Prof. Charles Van Karsen (associate professor, ME-EM). The project was sponsored by Chrysler.

CEO of Trion Lifts Inc., which designs and builds golf course turf equipment and maintenance tools and workstations.
Ray H. Herner, BSME 1954, retired President o Mosier Industries, which manufactures fluid power cylinders, vlaves and actuators.
Tom B. Moore, BSME 1966, retired President and major owner of RMH Group Inc., which designs sustainable and energy efficient buildings, solar panels & evaporative cooling.

ME and EM Academy Inductees Dr. Vijay K. Sazawal, PhD 1975, is Director,
Government Programs, U.S. Enrichment Company Inc., which supplies enriched uranium fuel for commercial nuclear power plants.
Maurice M. Taylor, Jr., BSME 1968, is President and CEO of Titan Tire/Titan Wheel International Inc., which makes tires for off-highway, mining, and agriculture tire & wheel markets.
Raymond M. Trewhella, BSME 1956, is retired President and CEO of Glassmaster Company, which makes marine supplies, boat supplies, filaments, cutting and fishing line.
