Moats are rings of water which surround the castle for defense

In Medieval times, moats were also used to dump garbage and sewage

A drawbridge crossed the moat and allowed for access to the castle

Additonal stone walls also helped to defend against attackers

Arrow slits allowed archers to defend from an elevated position
