Media@idasa

Media@idasa is a service unit within Idasa. We do four things:

1) We produce all your media;2) We disseminate your message to the public at

large;3) We disseminate your information within Idasa;4) We train communities to use media in pursuit

of democracy.

1. We produce all your media

• That includes your print media.

• We publish your books.

We produce all your promotional material

• We make your banners, pamphlets, flyers, etc.

We promote Idasa’s public image

• And generate our “corporate identity”.

We produce your newsletters

• Which includes electronic newsletters.

We produce short radio programmes

• Or announcements about your work.

Book sales• We sell your books and

publications, through our own online book store and using agencies in South Africa, elsewhere in Africa, the US and the UK.

• Idasa books bring in revenue of more than R70,000 a year from book sales.

2. Dissemination of the Idasa message

• We disseminate all the rich and varied information generated by Idasa to the broader public, through press releases and liaison with contacts in our database of about 300 newspapers, magazines, TV stations and radio stations across the continent.

All your work is on our website

• We get an average of 70 000 visitors per month, this is average of 2000 hits per day

• We collect online donations on our website.

News about Idasa appears throughout the world

• Every day, somewhere in the world – and sometimes in the most unlikely places – there is some coverage of Idasa.

Media coverage• Since the

beginning of this year, coverage of Idasa has appeared 870 times in electronic news sources.

• Coverage of Idasa has appeared in diverse sources, from The Wall Street Journal to The Haiti Sun to China Daily to The Tehran Times.

• Most coverage (nearly 70%) is in Africa, but news about Idasa has appeared in Asia, Australia, Canada, Europe and elsewhere and has been translated into Korean, Spanish, French, Portuguese, etc.

• We keep people informed using twitter.

3. Communication within Idasa

• The third, and maybe the most important, role of Media@idasa is to communicate all this information within Idasa, to get us talking to each other.

• We also promote communication within and about Idasa using all forms of social media.

• Idasa has its own blog, twitter, zoopy and flickr sites

• We can trace which countries we are working in, our partners, and what projects we are doing.

• We have a staff facebook group and an Idasa facebook page.

• We share your photos from your workshops and travels on flickr

• We help you to work collaboratively and engage in internet debate, using googledocs and wikis

4. Media training• We train community members and journalists to

use the media in a way that makes information and communication effective tools of democracy.

We believe an effective democracy requires – accountable and transparent governance;– free and open debate between citizens and

government;– open exchange of ideas and participation in

decision-making.

All of this is premised on citizens having the INFORMATION they need to– be active, – participative, – questioning, – play an effective role in decision-making. .– demand accountability and transparency from government.

Media and communication play a vital role in democracy.
