In October of 2011, DGS assumed the functions and responsibilities of the Department of Real Estate Services (DRES), Office of Public Education Facilities Modernization (OPEFM), Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) and other agencies, as it relates to capital construction, facility maintenance and real property mangement of District of Columbia properties.

By building and maintaining safe and green state-of-the-art facilities, which foster economic growth and elevate educational environments, our trusted and skillful employees will create modern and vibrant communities across all of the District of Columbia.

What We DoConstruction

• Build and/or modernize schools, recreation centers, parks, fire & MPD stations, and District government office buildings

Facilities• Make repairs and replace equipment at schools,

recreation centers, parks, fire & MPD stations, and District government buildings

• Cut grass and shovel snow at District facilities that we manage

Portfolio• Lease District-owned Property• Provide Charter Schools the opportunity to lease

closed schools

Protective Services• Provide security for the facilities that we manage

• Make Programs or issue permits at Parks, Rec Centers and other DPR facilities• Tree Removal• School custodial maintenance

Portfolio• Sell property for $1 or lease property/space for free• Sell or acquire a property outside of a formal process

Protective Services• Make arrests outside of District property• Provide security at schools

Contracting and Procurement• We do not procure for the whole city• We do not issue contracts outside of the District’s regulations for

contracting and procurement

Construction• Build stadiums or sports complexes • Build commercial residential properties
