    May Madness 25th Anniversary Weekend

    Fri – Sun May 13 – 15Clarkdale, AZ

Join in as May Madness celebrates its 25th contra dance weekend anniversary. Yes, you have been going to northern Arizona in the spring for a quarter of a century, so be sure to be there for the party this year! Registration is now open. Go to www.danceinaz.org and submit the registration form. This year payment can be made via Paypal or by check.

In addition to the traditional program of contra dancing in the main hall, the weekend’s activities will also include a concert at Clarkdale's historic gazebo in the town park, workshops on a variety of music, dance and related topics for dancers and musicians, a silent auction of crafts, goodie baskets, and other treasures, a clothing exchange, and more.

The wild weekend is held at Clark Memorial Clubhouse in historic Clarkdale, Arizona, an easy two-hour drive from Phoenix or just an hour from Flagstaff. Clarkdale's vintage ballroom, clubhouse and park with bandstand are a wonderful setting for our dance fiesta. A few local dining spots are within walking distance of the hall. Lodging, a variety of dining options, and camping can be found in the nearby towns of Jerome, Cottonwood, Sedona and Camp Verde. Hotels and motels in the area fill up quickly this time of year, so book your accommodations as soon as possible.

The amazing music will be provided by New England-based Maivish with Jamie Oshima, and the west coast’s Joyride. Your friendly and expert callers will be Bev Bernbaum and Jeremy Korr.

The name Maivish comes from an English colloquial term for the Song Thrush. At its core, Maivish is a collaboration between American fiddler Jaige Trudel and British born

    AZ FOLK NEWS

Maivish: Adam Broome & Jaige Trudel, with Jamie Oshima

guitarist Adam Broome who have been performing together as a duo and in other configurations for over a decade. Both a dance band and a concert act, Maivish tours regularly, appearing at dance weekends, festivals and venues around North America. Jaige and Adam also teach, offering workshops and private instruction, and are co-organizers for the Ooh La La dance weekend held in Richmond, Québec each summer. Jamie Oshima has been a part of the contra dance scene and been performing live music all of his life, both as a musician and a dancer. A young performer, he plays in a number of bands and produces music for his Youtube channel. Jamie plays an assortment of genres on a wide assortment of instruments, such as guitar, piano, drums, electric bass, mandolin, ukulele, foot percussion and anything else he can get his hands on.

Joyride is a contra dance band of friends from Portland, Oregon, playing for contra dances, dance camps, weekends and festivals. Known for tight ensemble work, skilled play, inventively arranged tune sets and fun energy, Joyride features great melodies and harmonies over strong, sweet rhythms. Hear George Penk's propulsive, soaring fiddle, Erik Weberg's deft flute, harmonica, & bombarde, Sue Songer's heartbeat piano and Jeff Kerssen-Griep's muscular guitar and percussion as they play dance tunes from the British Isles, New England, Appalachia, and French Canada, as well as close to home and surprising points beyond. The band works hard to create a great experience for everyone, every time; and smiles while doing it. Come catch a lift with Joyride at May Madness 2016!

Bev Bernbaum has been addicted to all things contra since

she was first introduced to it as a dancer at the wonderful Falcon Ridge Folk Festival (Albany, NY) in the summer of 1996. Not long afterwards, she made her debut as a caller for a group of drunken students in a college pub in Toronto! Seeing that things went much better than anticipated that night, she decided to keep at it. Since then, Bev has been in demand as a caller in her home town, at other dances, dance weekends and dance camps across Canada, the US, New Zealand and Denmark. Communities seek Bev out to provide a great

    experience for their dancers.

Bev's philosophy is to call dances that she loves to dance herself. She's always on the lookout for interesting figures or formations to mix things up. Her clear voice, calm manner and straightforward teaching style make contra dancing a pleasure for both beginning and experienced dancers.

Jeremy Korr is a popular bicoastal caller, based in Southern California most of the year and in Eastern Massachusetts during the summer. A second generation dancer, Jeremy has been dancing his whole life, and has been calling contras and squares around the country since 2003. He is a favorite at dance camps in the west and across the nation. He is acclaimed

for his fun dances, efficient walkthroughs, precise calling, and community spirit.
